I’ll start this article by putting it completely out there that I am in no way extremely knowledgeable of all current events, political or not. I am only a college student with minimal background in politics.
That being said, I am not blind to our society and I am entitled to an opinion on these realities.
I think it’s fair to say that a little over a year ago, since the increasing popularity of debates and uprising from the most recent election became the headline of news everywhere, our world has become increasingly different and even moreso divided.
Before then, I personally didn’t feel as though the media or the country I lived in was based upon hate or was taking steps backwards from unity.
And one thing I had never heard of until then was the ending or refusing or relationships based upon political opinions. I think that’s what strikes me the most- but I’ll get to that.
I think we’re all at a fault. I know I am. I think we all, from what I’ve seen, have become more close minded and unwilling to listen than we ever were in the past.
Speaking for myself, I’ve recently noticed how unaccepting I have become of other’s perspectives since these political debates have taken over the media. I started thinking close mindedly and focusing only on my opinions and people who share those opinions.
I never used to be like that. I never used to ever think my political views were things that shape any types of relationships.
And I, as well as many others, have unconsciously started incorporating these views into standards for building relationships.
In reality, these things should have nothing to do with whether or not you associate yourself with someone.
No one, and I repeat NO ONE is a better or worse person because of who they voted for or the views they support.
There’s absolutely nothing wrong with disagreement but there is absolutely everything wrong with shunning people based on their opinions that they are entitled to have.
As much as I know we’d all love to deny that we do that or declare that our opinions are the only ones that are correct; we just can’t.
That’s just not how this fucking works and that’s why our society has become so incredibly and disgustingly divided.
How dare you judge someone’s character by their political party.
How dare you not give someone a chance merely because they are conservative.
How dare you refuse someone’s company for the sole reason that they lean liberal.
Politics are not everything. We, as a country, and as the generation who are going to be the future of this country, need to come together.
We absolutely need to pull our heads out of our entitled asses for just a minute and wake the fuck up. Look at what this beautiful country has come to.
We have no reason to hate each other. We have every single reason to realize how blessed we are to be as lucky as we are, and to stand by those who may not be as lucky.
We honestly just need to get it together. We need to stand, hand in hand, and build each other up.
