Do you wake up feeling refreshed and ready for another, exciting new day? Maybe not. Perhaps you greet the new day with a yawn and a grumble, slapping the snooze button five more times before mustering the motivation to roll out of bed. We, humans, are amazing creatures, and nothing is more amazing than our ability to fall into a rut, seemingly incapable of making things better for ourselves. We have become the product of a lifestyle that is insanely boring and unfulfilling, yet comfortably safe, secure and normal.
The good news is that by no means are you alone as many people suffer from a boring lifestyle. The even better news is that it is possible to break free and start enjoying life again. Here are a few tips from someone who has been there and got the t-shirt.
A Risk a Day Keeps Boredom Away
Routine, comfort and complacency are the main culprits when it comes to a boring lifestyle. It’s all too easy to turn your brain off, fall in line and get on with what you’ve become accustomed to doing every day. The easiest way to get out of this rut is to force yourself to live a riskier life! Take risks on a daily basis, it doesn’t have to be anything huge, but even a small risk will encourage you to think differently and appreciate the control you have over your own life. Take a different route to work, visit a new cafe, speak to a stranger - anything out of the ordinary is great!
Never be afraid to explore the world around you. One of my favorite ways to spend some free time is to jump on my bike and cycle somewhere new, maybe get lost in the forest or head to a town I’ve never been before. I even have one of those helmet cameras to record my adventures and watch at a later date (when I feel down and maybe bored).
Find a New Hobby
Hobbies are essential to a healthy, balanced and exciting lifestyle. They generally encourage creativity and take your mind off work and other boring thoughts. Best of all, they rip you out of the routine that has bogged you down for so long! Rather than coming home from work and scrolling endlessly on Facebook every opportunity you get, get a new hobby and let your imagination, creativity, and sense of adventure run wild. It doesn’t matter what you go for, be it watercolor painting, crafting jewelry or getting out and about in the mountains, as long as you enjoy it and can disconnect from “real life”, you will soon reap the rewards!
Focus on You
You are the main character in the story that is your life and as such it’s essential that you shine the spotlight on yourself every now and then. Of course, other people matter and life would be insanely boring without them, but you have to look after yourself. What I mean is, you need to make sure that the things you do will have a positive influence on your life. If you spend all your time trying to impress or look after other people, your life will pass you by. Every decision you make should be made with the certainty that it is the best thing for you. For example, perhaps you find yourself covering your colleague's shifts just a little too often? If this is getting you down and preventing you from doing your own thing, stop! Forget any notions that you “might be letting people down” - you can be sure they won’t be losing any sleep over the fact that you’re working their shift. Do the things that you want to do, and if the people around you give you a hard time for doing that, perhaps they’re not the best people to be hanging out with.
Shake it Up
Remember the idea of taking risks? Well, this takes it a step further - anyone really suffering from a boring lifestyle should read on. Your comfort zone, no matter how boring, or detrimental to you it is, will always be the safe and secure place you crave. But you’re not stuck there and you are in control of your life. There is nothing stopping you from shaking it all up and changing the things that aren’t working. In a dead end relationship? Maybe this seems harsh, but if you’re not getting anything out of it think about moving on. Not happy in your job? There are plenty more jobs out there, even some that you might enjoy. It takes a lot of courage to drastically change things in your life, but the benefits make it a worthwhile step. You are only as stuck as you allow yourself to be - be the best for you and be in control.
Look For the Good
Negativity and pessimism are two factors that can spawn boredom and unhappiness. When you go out and see only the bad things - gum on the street, people rushing about, etc. - you’re bound to feel bad yourself. It’s a vicious circle, but the mind is like a computer; with the right programming language, you can change the way it works. Look out for the good things in life and in people. Each day write a list of all the things you’re grateful for. When you see these positive aspects, your brain will be encouraged to think more positively. Instead of focusing on the one guy that barged past you - look around at the little old lady, laughing and joking with her husband, or the guy who helped the kitten cross the road. There are a lot of good people in the world, and a lot of fantastic things to appreciate. By taking a step back and acknowledging them and thinking positively, you’ll start to feel better about your life and prospects.
Change Starts With You, Now
They say that nothing good comes easy, and an exciting lifestyle is certainly no exception, especially if you’re currently trapped in a boring rut. But you’re not helpless and it is you that is ultimately in control of your life. Small steps can make a huge difference in a short amount of time, and many of these changes can be implemented immediately. You have to want better for yourself, and be prepared to work for it. It’s easy to slip into a complacent existence, but if you want to lead a more interesting life, it’s within your grasp. Take control of your situation, look at the good in the world and engage in more interesting actions and interactions.
