You’re in your second semester of college and your new found catch phrase has become “I can handle it”.
Between 18 credit hours, a full time job, being a college athlete, trying to keep a steady relationship, and finding time for a social life saying you have your hands full is an understatement.
Trying to stay calm and acting like you have everything under control isn’t always easy.
You’re the type of person who refuses to admit defeat or say they need to lessen there to do list.
Everyone keeps asking if you need help or telling you to cut back on things and your answer is always”I can handle it.”
College is supposed to be fun, the best years of your life and yes keeping busy is good but are you missing out on the best years of your life doing so?
Here is some advice for the fellow college student who claims they can handle it.
1.) As a college student having a job and making money is essential and a must but there is such a thing as working too much.
Don’t be afraid to ask for a day off every now and then.
Working every single day can become exhausting and cause you to resent your job. So buy those concert tickets, take the day off, miss those 8 hours of work and go have fun with your friends.
2.) Your boyfriend should understand when you need a day to yourself or a night out with the girls.
Every girl dreams of having a boyfriend who wants to spend as much time as possible with them, but juggling a boyfriend along with a busy schedule can be a hard thing to do.
Make time for him but remember other people want to see you too. If he really cares he will understand and be grateful for the 2 or 3 days you designate for him every week.
3.) You’re a college student.
Obviously your grades and classes should be your number one priority but don’t let the stress of one bad grade ruin your entire life.
If were being realistic it’s rare for a student to graduate college in only four years, so take a step back, breathe and drop that class if you need to or go down to 16 credit hours instead of 18.
It will be okay, I promise. One day you will wear that cap n gown. But most importantly remember that you can always retake that class, but you can’t retake a second,a minute, a day, a month or even a year of your life.
4.) Being a college athlete is by far the most rewarding, stressful and time consuming thing that a student can do.
As much as you say you’ll work on homework during those long bus rides to away games, you won’t.
Balancing a sport into a college students schedule can be tricky. You’ll begone most weekends and be at practice most nights.
Although your sport will seem like a chore it will also be your escape. Your escape from the business and stress of your everyday life.
No matter how hard things may get, never give this up. Without it you will lose so much more than just a game, and you will find yourself feeling more stressed out then before.
5.) No one can survive college without their friends. Don’t lose the people closest to you due to being too busy.
Make time for your friends and cherish every moment you get with them.
Sometimes a day with your friends is worth pulling an all nighter to finish that essay you pushed off, or calling off sick at work, or playing hooky in that class that you weren’t going to pay attention in anyway.
Taking a step back from the stress of a busy life and spending a day with your girls is essential in keeping you sane and helping you survive college.
6.) Lastly, it’s okay to take a step back and ask for help sometimes.
Don’t be afraid to say “I can’t handle it”. After all you aren’t superman.
