Spa time is the best time as far as I am concerned. I am the type of girl that can find escapism behind the curtain of a quiet room and an inner calm in the steam room, hot spring and sauna. And I will be first in line when body treatments are back on the menu. Can someone say salt scrub?

Even in the midst of the pandemic and with little access to day spa life, I find myself creating a spa environment in my home. If you are like me, you can relate to these things.

1.) I cannot leave the store without at least four herbs. Rosemary is my very best friend. And I will put any herb in a vase around my house. Soap is an herbal experience!

2.) I have freeze dried Eucalyptus in my shower. To give my showers that spa fresh feeling.

3.) Did someone say tea? Mint leaves and a lemon and I am at the spahh thriving

4.) My laundry detergent, dishwashing liquid and hand soaps are all herby getaway scents. Did someone want to have an Herbes De Provence dish washing experience? Raises hand.

5.) The minute I come home, my bra is off. Because my home is a spa and who wears bras in a spa?

6.) My water has at least a lemon in it if not mint leaves, raspberries, blackberries, you get the idea.

8.) If I cannot get the herb version, I need the ocean version.

9.) If you asked me about my favorite body treatment, I could tell you the spa location and the entire service from the menu and offer up a name of the therapist you should ask for at the spa.

10.) I only get my nails done at places that offer spa journeys for my toes. Because my pedicure is an experience and my toes deserve a journey.

11.) I cannot just have a hand lotion, it must be organic and herb infused.

13.) I have a diffuser by my bed and next to my work space.

Not to say that there’s anything wrong with these incredible cities; I certainly encourage you to visit the Colosseum in Rome, The Western Wall in Jerusalem, and the Opera House in Sydney.

But it’s the crazy adventure to find the hidden island off the coast of the mainland of Thailand where your mind will really be blown. It’s your road trip through Slovakia where you can barely read the road signs; it’s your decision to pick a direction: left or right, and just go.

You know that you’ll either wind up in the right place, or you’ll wind up super lost in the middle of a town called Szekesfehervar – just to find that you’re in Hungary, not Slovakia at all.

It is during these moments that you really push yourself – when you are forced to use the Spanish that you learned ten years ago to ask which bus will get you to Ipiales and across the border into Ecuador.

It is when you’re subjected to the scrutiny of the local Vietnamese people as you attempt to find Dong Xuan on the map, and no one can understand a goddamn word you’re saying so they just laugh at you.

Your guard comes down, your frustration turns to defeat, and you give up and just laugh with them. It is during these moments that you learn the most about yourself:

 

1. You are forced to communicate through emotion, not language.

Your miming skills will certainly take the plunge when you’re in a foreign country where you don’t know the language. You use hand motions, facial expressions, and sounds to express what it is that you want or need.

 

2. Getting lost is half the fun.

You’ve already prepared yourself to get lost. It takes having no idea where you are for you to know where you want to go; it takes getting lost to find yourself.

 

3. You’re always on your toes.

Because you’re on such unfamiliar ground, you’re always observing and absorbing what is around you. You’re not in autopilot on your way to work; you’re looking out the window at the grasslands of Uttarakhand in India; And you’re talking to the Chilean woman about how many kids she has; meanwhile, you’re trying to figure out the cheapest route from Dresden to Pilsen.

 

4. You learn to really roll with the punches.

If you’re the kind of person who enjoys pristine service in a restaurant, reimbursement for poorly organized transportation, or punctual meetings – traveling to these crazy places will either be the worst experience of your life, or will teach you to chill the fuck out.

Not everything in the world runs as smoothly as our luxurious first world does – and that’s okay.

 

5. There are no masks to hide behind.

There is no pretending to be something, or faking anything in these parts of the world. You are a complete stranger; an alien; an outsider. You are a visitor in their country, not yours. Once you step outside of your comfort zone, you are humbled.

 

6. Your eyes will be opened.

Your days won’t be spent in a closed resort drinking a poolside margarita. You will be learning new words, new customs, and new habits.

The civil rights law prohibits discrimination based on disability in employment, public accommodations, commercial facilities, telecommunications, and transportation. It applies to the United States Congress too. 

Other legal changes over the years have helped bring about better rights for people with disabilities. There are specific disability rights contained in:

● The Telecommunications Act
● The Fair Housing Act
● The Air Carrier Access Act
● The National Voter Registration Act
● The Civil Rights of Institutionalized Persons Act
● The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act
● The Rehabilitation Act
● The Architectural Barriers Act

That means people with a partial disability or a total disability are now protected in many ways. However, just because there are now many laws that ensure people with disabilities are treated fairly, it does not mean there are not still issues with current disability rights.

Accessibility Is Still an Issue

While many new buildings include wheelchair ramps that meet the minimum requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act to enable wheelchair users and others with disabilities to access places safely, there are still many buildings that discriminate against people with disabilities. 

It is not only about wheelchair ramps. It is about owners of accommodation, businesses, transportation, and so on, implementing a variety of measures to make their spaces more accessible. 

Failing to eliminate barriers to accessibility is seen as discriminatory by many people with disabilities. Businesses, organizations, and individuals need to wake up to that if disability rights are to be improved. 

People with Disabilities Need to Be Given More Individual Empowerment 

Generally speaking, disability rights activists are calling for more empowerment. 

They want institutions and organizations to move away from over-protection and close supervision and instead assist in a way that empowers disabled people’s wishes and needs. 

Basically, people with disabilities want to be in control of their own ships. Just like anyone wants to be masters of their own destinies. 

Institutional Segregation Is Still Happening

History has taught us many things. One important lesson to learn is intentional segregation is always bad. 

Even if it is driven by supposedly positive motives, segregation is discriminatory, so people with disabilities should not have to put up with segregated nursing homes, self-contained classrooms, and sheltered workshops. 

Although there have been many updated practices in recent years, institutional segregation of people with disabilities still occurs and needs to be stopped. 

Why is it important to know about the current state of disability rights?

Civil rights affect every kind of group and individual, so disability rights are just as important as any other rights.

You do not have to be a disabled person to care about disability rights. In fact, part of the problem for why disability rights have become stagnant in some areas is down to the issues not being more widely known by the general community. 

Also, the more you educate yourself about disability rights, the more you can take action. That does not necessarily mean attending a protest. It is more about changing your attitude and behavior. In turn, you could create real-world change. 

For instance, if you are a business owner with premises that are not easily navigable and accessible for people with disabilities, change the layout of your store or office. Similarly, if you are a landlord, ensure you do not discriminate against people with disabilities. 

 

A Letter to the Mother Who Saw Me Grow Up From Heaven

Dear Mom,

I can still remember the worst day of my life: the day I lost you. So I stood in a room filled with black trying to understand why the world was doing this to me. Everything I was going to miss began to flash before my eyes.

The one person I needed most, I had to live without. Girls aren’t supposed to live without their moms. I still needed to learn to do all those things you did for me, all those things you made look so easy.

I hated coming home to a house I knew you wouldn’t be in, or getting off the bus and not seeing you waiting. And I wanted to hear your voice ask me about my classes. Dad did his best to help me with homework, but that was always our thing. I had to encounter so many milestones without you, and I knew it wasn’t your fault. You didn’t choose to leave us.

My first school dance, I knew you would’ve taken twice as many pictures as the other parents, and developed them the next day. My first date: I wondered if you would’ve helped me find something to wear, whether or not you would’ve liked the boy. I wish you could have faced my awkward years with me. Throughout my first relationship, I wondered when to tell them about you because no matter how much time passed, the words My mom’s dead don’t ever sound great. My first prom: when everyone of my friends had two parents to take pictures with, I knew I was missing a vital component. And I know you would’ve cheered the loudest as I walked across the stage at graduation. You wouldn’t be there for my first day of college. While everyone always said they got home sick, I know you would’ve given the best advice to make me feel better.

I can’t imagine not having you there for my wedding day; I know you would’ve told me I was the prettiest bride. I’m going to have to face every Christmas and every birthday without you. No matter what I asked Santa for or how many candles were on my cake, my wish was and is to have you back–and I knew it could never be granted. There will always be sadness to every holiday we have without you by our side. There will always be sadness when I realized I can’t say “parents??? when talking, but I’ve learned to only say dad. I wondered, at first, what our family could be without you a part of it. I wondered if I would turn into the daughter that would make you proud, or if your absence would mean I’d never amount to my full potential.

I sat there with all those thoughts rushing through my head, and a million people all around me, in a room full of your favorite flowers, and pictures of you and the time we did have the privilege of having you with us. Although you were taken from me and I can’t understand why, I know you didn’t want to go. I know you probably wondered what would happen to us with you gone, too. Would we be okay? But there are a few things you should know:

I want you to know, dad is going to do a great job.

He figured out how to brush my hair. He even made it through my awkward stages of puberty. He made it through my dating phases and wiped the tears I cried over guys. He became the hard*ss I never knew him to be, and that is because of you.

I want you to know, the only reason I am the person I am is because of you

I’m doing pretty well today, and I take pride when people tell me I remind them of you.

I want you to know, I miss you every day and take you with me.

Although a lot of time has passed, you aren’t forgotten. I still look at the pictures of us with as big of a smile. I know you’re still here.

I want you to know, I will never forget you.

I’ll keep telling people about you and, although our lives have moved on, they move on with you in our hearts.

I want you to know, I’ll do my best to make you proud.

Every day I try to make everyone proud, but, most of all, I want to make you proud. I know you’re up there, looking down on me every day.

I want you to know, I still hear your voice when I’m faced with a difficult situation.

Your voice is one I’ll never forget. Sometimes when I’m faced with conflict, I think about what you would’ve done. 

I want you to know, I’ll be strong for my siblings–but sometimes I’ll break down.

And I want to be strong for them, I want to never shed tears, but there have been moments (and I’m sure there will be more) where I’ve been strong for too long and I break down, knowing your invisible arms are wrapped around me.

I want you to know, my kids will know about you and I only wish you could meet them.

My kids will know about their grandmother, and so will their kids.

I want you to know, I’ll try and be nice to dad’s new GFs–but none of them will compare to you.

And I know dad is a catch; he got you. Though I was apprehensive at first about him moving into the dating stage, I accepted the new women in our life. She knows she’s second to you.

I want you to know, I’m going to mess up and I wish I could hear you yell at me for it.

During this thing called life, I’ve messed up and I’ll continue to mess up. Sometimes all I want is to hear your voice yelling at me one more time.

And I want you to know, I’ll never forget your voice–but I wish I could hear it.

I wish I could hear your voice in something other than the videos and in my memory. But I’ll keep it with me, until we meet again.

And I want you to know, I’ll never forget your hugs and kisses–but I wish I had one more.

Even if dad gives the best hugs and kisses, I do still miss yours and would love one more, if I could.

I want you to know how thankful I am to call myself your daughter.

Of my many accomplishments, one of my favorites is simply being your daughter.

I want you to know how much I really do love you.
