Small Business Saturday Is So Important

This weekend is Small Business Saturday, a day we celebrate the dreamers and the devoted entrepreneurs that make up the fabric of this nation. From the local pizza shop to the corner store, these shops are such bright spots in our communities and now more than ever, they need your help.

I am a small business owner myself. I own Lulu’s boutique in beautiful downtown Mission, Ks.

Lulu’s like so many other small businesses, has felt the pinch these past few months. It has been incredibly difficult and I have cried many tears over my uncertain future. Many of us have had to re-imagine our goals and our entire business models. For me, I went from primarily being a brick and mortar shop to building up a more robust social media presence so I can sell online and ship to my customer. It has been difficult, but small businesses know how to hustle and pivot in unforeseen situations like this, but we still need all of the help we can get from you, our beloved customers!

There are several ways to support small businesses.

First, of course, you can go shop their stores or enjoy their food. Small boutiques and shops have some of the most unique inventory and eats and you are sure to find something that no one else can offer. The  items or cuisine offered are curated to fill the need in the community. For instance, as an artist, I know the importance of finding a venue to show my work, so when I opened Lulu’s, I knew I wanted to fill it with items from local artists. Now over 20 artists have a place to sell their work, and in turn,

did you know, small businesses and makers tend to spend their dollars locally! They know the importance of supporting small businesses so they give back to the community ten fold!

During the pandemic, we understand you may not feel comfortable shopping inside, so ask about their shipping or curbside pickup options and if you do choose to go inside, make sure to follow safety protocols and wear your mask.

Also, most small businesses offer gift certificates or gift cards, most of which, you can purchase online or over the phone. This way you can support the business but can wait to redeem your gift card at a future time.

Second, Share, Comment, Like!! Almost all businesses these days have a social media page, so if you cannot afford to shop, show them some love on their social sites!! This may seem trivial, but shares and comments on social media are so important. One, by sharing their page or post you are showing them to more potential customers and by commenting, you are adding to their social media presence, which is huge for small businesses.

Third, and probably most important, shop small before shopping large department stores and chains.

For every department store, there is most certainly a small business counterpart and these small businesses rely on community support. Trust me, the department stores will be fine!

So shop small this Saturday and every other Saturday of the year! You will be helping to support a dream and by allowing these small businesses to thrive, our communities will only grow stronger!!

Consignment Shopping 101

Need a little extra cash? I have a brilliant way for you to make a little dough! Clean out your closet!!
Yes, you heard that right! Your local consignment shops would be thrilled to look through your items and offer you cash for things you no longer want! So how do you go about knowing what these local shops want? First thing, go visit the shops in your area. This is a great way to find out their fashion aesthetic and see what they are currently buying.  Second, talk to the owner or staff and ask what their typical buying procedures are. Most shops offer a percentage of the used market value for a particular item in either cash, store credit or consignment. If you choose the cash or credit option, you get your cash or credit immediately. If you choose the consignment option, you receive a percentage of the profit once the items sells. All shops vary so be sure to ask what their options are.
On top of getting cash for your unwanted items, consignment shops have amazing one of a kind items that you simply cannot find in retail shops. From contemporary fashion to vintage wears, there is much to be discovered!
They are typically very selective about the pieces that they purchase and consign, so you are only going to find items that are in impeccable condition, many of which look as if they are new and by shopping resale, you are significantly lowering your carbon footprint.
Did you know that that globally we produce 13 tons of textile waste every year and 95% of which is reusable, resell-able or recyclable? If everyone on the planet would buy just one recycled garment in lieu of buying that same item in a retail store, it would amount to taking 800,000 cars off the road..now that is an incredible statistic! Just think, you could help change the world by just shopping!!
So let’s recap: Visit consignment shops, sell your clothing, buy one of a kind items, save the planet, and never fear a ‘bitch stole my look’ moment. See my fall fashion must haves! Watch
