2016 is the year of celebrity deaths and it’s not even finished. We have lost from music icons, to actors. Each one of these people have impacted the world from one way to another.
1. David Bowie
70’s icon David Bowie, known for songs like “Fame” and “Changes” passed away on January 10th at the age of 69 after his 18 month battle of liver cancer.
This comes two days after his release of his album Blackstar. According to co-producer Tony Visconti, the album was a “parting gift” to Bowie’s fans before his death.
2. Alan Rickman
Most known as Severus Snape in the Harry Potter series, actor Alan Rickman died at the age of 69 from pancreatic cancer on January 14th. This was a huge loss for the film community as well as Harry Potter fans.
Harry Potter co-star Emma Watson stated:
“I feel so lucky to have worked and spent time with such a special man and actor. I’ll really miss our conversations”.
Rickman has played roles in Die Hard, and most recently was the voice in Alice Through the Looking Glass.
3. Glenn Frey
At the age of 67,Glenn Frey one of the founding members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inducted band the Eagles, passed away on January 18th. According the band’s official statement on their website, Frey died from “complications of Rheumatoid Arthritis, Acute Ulcerative Colitis and Pneumonia”.
As well as being successful with the Eagles, Frey was successful solo releasing a hit album in the 80’s and then later in 20112.
4. Harper Lee
On February 19th, author Harper Lee, known for her novel To Kill a Mockingbird, passed away quietly in her sleep at the age of 89. To Kill a Mockingbird which was released in 1960, became an instant success eventually becoming a classic novel in American Literature.
55 years later, Go Set a Watchman, which was originally written in the 1950’s was released. It is said to be To Kill a Mockingbird‘s first draft.
5. Doris Roberts
Known for her role on Everybody Loves Raymond, actress Doris Roberts passed away on April 18th, at the age of 90. Roberts died of a stroke in her sleep.
She’s made cameos on other televsion shows like Touched by an Angel, Grey’s Anatomy, Desperate Housewives, and The Middle.
6. Prince
Prince Rogers Nelson, more known as Prince and The Artist Formerly Known as Prince, died on April 21st at age 57 in his home. He was known for his hits “When Doves Cry”, “Purple Rain”, and “Little Red Corvette”.
Two weeks before his death, Prince became unresponsive and his jet had to make an emergency landing. It was recently found out that his cause of death was of a fentanyl overdose.
7. Muhammad Ali
On June 3rd, Muhammad Ali, “The Greatest” passed away at the age of 74. The day before, he was admitted to the hospital for a respiratory illness with his cause of death to be septic shock.
Training since he was 12 years old, Ali won gold at the 1960 Summer Olympics and has competed in boxing matches against rivals Joe Frazier, George Foreman, and Sonny Liston.
He was drafted into the Vietnam War, but refused to, stating, “I ain’t got no quarrel with the Viet Cong.
8. José Fernández
In the early hours of September 25th, baseball lost one of its own. 24 year old Jose Fernandez of the Miami Marlins passed away from a boating accident.
Fernandez played in the MLB All Star Game in 2013 and 2016. He was Rookie of the Year in 2013 as well.
On September 20th, just 5 days before his death, Fernandez announced that his girlfriend was expecting, being their first child.
