25 Badass Songs to Kill Zombies By

Media has been deluged by zombies for over a decade as films like Shaun of the Dead and 28 Days Later revitalized the genre, and shows like The Walking Dead, Dead Set, and Z Nation brought the undead into the homes of couch potatoes.

Zombies adorn our walls, our videogames, our art…and yes, even our music. There are scads of horrorcore bands, oodles of comedic zombie tunes, scores of scores and soundtracks, and even more undead-themed music that’s downright unclassifiable. If I left any of your favorites off this list, please let me know in the comments. It’s the only way I’ll learn. Or, just sit back and enjoy my favorite songs to kill zombies by.

1. Re: Your Brains by Jonathan Coulton. This modern classic zombie tune tells the story of hungry zombies chomping their way through an office.

2. Anything by Penderecki. Best known, perhaps, for his work on The Shining soundtrack, Penderecki’s cello stylings are damn scary. Find some here.

3. Run for Your Life by Aaron Stoquert. Stoquert has been creating zombie tunes since 2011, and this first EP (5 great songs) is an excellent way to acquaint yourself.

4. Fire at the Pageant by The Felice Brothers. A popular band, but I’d not heard them until this song was used in the first trailer for The Battery.

5. People Who Died by Jim Carroll. Heard in the remake of Dawn of the Dead, a smashing song great for smashing heads to.

6. Return of the Living Dead (soundtrack). Okay, it’s a bit of a cheat to use a soundtrack from a zombie movie. But this one is classic, and utterly perfect.

7. Thunderkiss ’65 by Rob Zombie. Most of Rob Zombie’s music would be fine for killing zombies. But this one is my pic for his best killing song.

8. Hey Man, Nice Shot by Filter. Whether your zombies are slow or fast, this tune will inspire you to get killy on them.

9. Remaining Days by Aaron Stoquert. Yeah, I just mentioned him earlier. Once you listen to this album, you’ll know why I had to bring him up again.

10. Zombie by The Cranberries. No, this song isn’t actually about undead cannibals, but since they say “Zombie” over and over again, it’s hard to resist.

11. Brain Removal Device by Cannibal Corpse. No explanation needed, I should think.

12. To Raise the Dead by Vincent Price. Part of the “Tales of Witches, Ghosts, and Goblins” album, this spoken word piece will surely inspire you to whack some Zs.

13. Zombie Prostitute by Voltaire. If you’ve never had a crush on Voltaire, you’ve clearly never been goth. Lyrics here, and they’re hilarious.

14. Bodies by Drowning Pool. “Let the bodies hit the floor,” is a little on-the-nose for zombie killing lyrics. Still, it’s a good one.

15. Blut! Sex! Fire! by Hanzel Und Gretyl. This song is hard, fast, and gives the impression of someone busting up the place—zombies? Or you?

16. The Walking Dead (soundtrack) by Bear McCreary. I tried to narrow this down to a song or two. It’s just not possible. Don’t believe me? YOU try it!

17. Rammstein by Rammstein. Most of this German powerhouse band’s songs are ideal for zombie killing. But this one is particularly good for dispatching the undead.

18. O Fortuna from Carmina Burana by Carl Orff. This cut from the classic oratorio is good for any high impact venture, like taking out hungry zombies.

19. Ace of Spades by Motorhead. One of the hardest songs in all of rock. If you’ve never killed a zombie to this tune, you haven’t lived.

20. Killing in the Name by Rage Against the Machine. Don’t let Rage being Paul Ryan’s fave band put you off of them. This is a kill-sterpiece.

21. Steel Monkey by Jethro Tull. This song is a divergence from Tull’s usual, medieval sound, and it’s great for kicking ass and taking head shots.

22. Girl on Fire by Rob Zombie. An excellent choice for anyone who prefers to dispatch zombies via torch.

23. Anything by Goblin. Even taking the original Dawn of the Dead soundtrack out of the equation, Goblin has produced some of the scariest music ever.

24. The Growlers by Sean Duffy, Dan Martin, and Wednesday Lee Friday. Spoken word perfection—but I’m a little biased.

25. Atom Bomb by Fluke. Great for any sort of killing, and remarkably effective for taking out the undead.
