What’s your fave Community episode? Whether it’s the one where they visit the old west ghost town, the one where Abed delivers a baby in the background, or something that happened during the gas leak year—you’re no doubt as thrilled as I am that Community is coming back in March 2015.
After NBC cancelled the popular sitcom after its 5th season, fans took to the Internets to express their outrage. How could Community end before it reached the oft-repeated “Six Seasons and a Movie?” How could we leave Greendale without knowing whether Jeff ends up with Britta or Annie (or someone else entirely—who better not be Professor Slater)? Could we really be expected to continue on with our lives without knowing what happened to Troy and Levar Burton on their sea voyage? Happily, Yahoo! stepped up to bring fans a 6th season of Community with 13 new episodes.
Unless you have Changnesia, you already know that Community has not been without its share of overblown scandal. The legendary dicketry of Chevy Chase led to him leaving the show after Season Four. Chevy, we all loved Foul Play and The Three Amigos, but walking off any set in a huff makes you look like an ass no matter how funny you can be when you try. Debate over whether creator/showrunner Dan Harmon quit or was fired still goes on despite Harmon himself weighing in.
Plenty of our old faves are returning. Study group members Jeff Winger (Joel McHale), Annie Edison (Alison Brie), Britta Perry (Gillian Jacobs), and Abed Nadir (Danny Pudi) are all coming back for the new season. Dean Pelton (Jim Rash) and Ben Chang (Ken Jeong) are also promised. Britta’s parents are slated to make an appearance—played by Martin Mull and Lesley Ann Warren. We can presume that the elder Perry’s will give us incalculable insights on Britta’s personality and penchant for opposition.
Yahoo! reports that Season Six will not feature the duck-drawing Professor Hickey (Jonathan Banks—who is presumably too busy shooting Breaking Bad prequel Better Call Saul), or Professor Ian Duncan (John Oliver, also busy with his own show). Donald Glover (Troy Barnes) is not expected to return, not even for a cameo. Even more shocking is the recently announced absence of Yvette Nicole Brown (Shirley Bennet), so we can presume there won’t be much singing in Season Six. It also remains to be seen where Greendalians will get $5 Shirley’s Sandwiches with a side order of proselytizing. Personally, I would love to see Michael Kenneth Williams (Professor Marshall Kane) return to Community since Boardwalk Empire no longer needs him.
New cast members are slated to include Paget Brewster—playing an entirely new character than the one she played in Season Five. If you only know Paget Brewster from Criminal Minds, it’s worth noting that she has a fantastic sense of humor. Check her out on Drunk History or even Talking Dead to get a better sense of her. She’s gonna be great—though we know essentially nothing of her character yet. Well, she’s called Francesca “Frankie” Dart. Without the word “professor” in front of her name, we can assume she won’t be teaching. But that’s all. Keith David is also joining the cast this season. He was the narrator in Pillows and Blankets, so we already know he has a killer voice. Will his new character, Elroy Patashnik form an alliance with Blanketsburg, or perhaps, New Fluffytown? That remains to be seen.
Will all these character swap-outs create even more new timelines? It might not be a bad idea to have some felt cutout beard-and-mustache combos ready just in case. We can presume that plenty of our favorite students will appear. Perhaps we’ll see the wedding of Vicky and Fat Neil (or Neil, if you prefer). Maybe Magnitude will finally get a recording contract—Pop Pop! Perhaps Starburns will think of an even more ridiculous way to draw attention to himself, start another meth lab, or pursue further on-campus job opportunities. And what of Leonard? That guy could be up to absolutely anything.
Perhaps the biggest question of all about the new season is whether or not it will be Community’s last. Personally, I don’t think so. Cable reruns and fan fervor is what brought Community back to life after its ruthless cancellation. It doesn’t make sense to do all that just for 13 episodes. Dan Harmon seems to agree with me, Tweeting:
The Sixth Season finale is slated for June 2nd, 2015. So be sure to order some “real” pizza and invite a few friends over. I’m sure I don’t have to tell you how to decide who has to go to the door. I for one am stoked to see what everyone is up to, whether Abed and Rachel are still together, and what fantastic outfits Dean Craig Pelton (Jim Rash) will prance around in for our enjoyment. Maybe Vaughn will return to say “Hey, What’s up, How’s it going?” See all you Human Beings there—or as they say on campus: E Pluribus Anus.
