Sweet Magnolias, The Show That Deconstructs Many Female Archetypes

Sweet Magnolia’s is a show that defines what it means to be a woman in todays society. This show really highlights the issues that many women are working through in our male dominated society. This show gives us the look at how families are dealing with multiple issues. The single mom working to giver her child a better life. The woman who focused on her career but longs for that family she never knew sh wanted. The woman who has to start over because her husband left her. The other woman who is trying to find the place within the family that is so broken. And it is through  the many intricacies of these woman that I was able to find things about myself.

Dana Sue

This woman gives it her all in everything, however, she finds herself feeling like she is less than because there are so many things going on at once and she cannot give herself to everything. She is running a business and going into another. She is raising her daughter, and finding that she feels the need to be in control of everything. It is not until one of the chefs she works with brings her out of her world and to a fishing hole to relax that she finally get’s back into touch with herself.

Maddie

This is a woman who finds herself in uncharted territory. She is newly divorced, and she is now a single mom of three kids learning to co-parent with her ex-husband. And she has to find her way in this new way of life. She finds empowerment through her friends with a new business. She is now running the dream that three of them had when they where young. By the end of the first seasons she is finding herself in this new life that she never thought she wold be. She is fighting to make it work, find what is best for her and her family. It is a transformation. We also got to see her learn to love someone new again. After a divorce she was not sure she could trust or that she would love another man. Then we take a journey with her as she learns to trust herself enough to let someone new in.

Helen

This is a working woman. One who has always put her career first. And in doing so, always puts the town and her friends first. She is about always doing the right thing. Like helping Maddie through a divorce. And buying the house she dreamed of and turning it into a space for women to come and do some self-care. She took on some legal things for her town, and she even helped with mock trail for the high school. One time, she rediscovered that she wanted to be a mother. And when an old flame comes back into her life, she learns that he still does not want children. This being a deal breaker for both of them, they say good-bye for the last time. It was heartbreaking for her, but we get to see the strong one through the whole series be uplifted by her incredible friends when she hits her low, bringing the show full circle.

Sweet Magnolias is a show that everyone woman should watch. We need relationships like these as women. To hold each other up when needed and to celebrate each other. We need to be able to go to a group of women we trust and say,  ‘I need you’. That is what this show taught me. You do not need to have 60 friends. Instead have  just a few good ones who will be there to celebrate your success and to help you through your losses.

You can find Sweet Magnolias on Netflix.

Emily Anne

Hi, my name is Emily and I am 26. I spend a lot of my time being a dog mom to my Irish setter, Annie and trying to be the very best girlfriend to my very best friend. I am a full time student and although I am not sure what I want my career to look like, I do know that I want to help people. I also work full time as a teaching assistant. Writing is one of my hobbies, which is what brought me to Puckermob. I love having a place where I can share my stories, the good and the bad. I love that I can share the things that have helped me through the hard times, as well as, all of the good things that are happening. I also love to read. Some of my favorite books right now are “Didn’t see that coming,” by Rachel Hollis and “Daring Greatly,” by Brene Brown. You can find me on Instagram where you can see all of my adventures with Annie, my boyfriend, and my baby-sister.
