Who doesn’t love wishing? Humankind has been inventing new ways to wish on things for as long as any of us can remember.

What are we wishing for? Well, most wishers believe that you aren’t supposed to tell what you wished for, lest it not come true. Wishers also caution each other to “Be careful what you wish…because you just might get it.” What are we wishing on? That’s a much more interesting question.

    1. Wishbone. I don’t know about your family, but in mine everybody wanted the wishbone. After the turkey has been fully dismantled, the wishbone is set aside to dry. Later, two people take one prong and pull until it snaps. Whoever is holding the prong with the top still connected is gonna get their wish.

    2. Straw Wrappers. This is similar to the wishbone. Remove the paper from the straw and tie a knot in it. One person pulls at each end until the paper tears, and whoever has the knot gets their wish.

    3. Eyelashes. If an eyelash falls out accidentally (don’t pull it!), put it on the back of your hand. Close your eyes and make your wish while blowing gently. If the eyelash is gone when you open your eyes—wish granted!

    4. Penny. One might argue that a penny’s real value lies in the wishing. A penny can be thrown into any body of water. Some say to make the wish while it’s in the air, others insist that you can’t wish until it hits the water. Either way, pennies are great for wishing.

    5. Birthday Candles. We all know how this goes. Candles go on cake and get lit. Then, the birthday boy or girl tries to blow them all out with one breath. If they do, they get their wish—and a cake with a bunch of wax on it. Yuck.

    6. White Horses. Did you know you can make a wish every time you see a white horse? There’s a catch though, which is that you have to wish before you see the tail. Why? Because nobody wants to wish on a horse’s ass.

    7. Rainbows. How do you not wish on a rainbow? Rainbows are awesome. When you see one, close your eyes and wish. Then count to ten, keeping your eyes closed. If you can still see the rainbow when you open your eyes—wish granted.
