The word “superfood” is trending on the lips of every health fanatic, fitness guru, and celeb. But what does “superfood” actually mean?
The founder and CEO of Nativas Naturals, Zack Adelman, states, “A superfood is a nutrient-dense fruit or vegetable that contains a high amount of protein, omega-3, antioxidants, minerals, fiber or other essential nutrients that have proven health benefits. Nutrient density is the ratio of micronutrients to calories – superfoods have a high ratio of micronutrients.”
He concluded with “The modern science behind the benefits provided by superfoods is still young and evolving. However, traditional use in the countries of origin demonstrates a strong respect for the foods. In those cultures, food is often viewed as medicine, too, and they follow the concept of “you are what you eat….Often, superfoods are used as a specific traditional remedy, or they are just part of a regular routine to maintain health.”
We’re all up on maca root, kale, chia seeds, and cacao but this new wave of superlicious superness is worth a mention (or two).
Camu-camu
It is now being referred to as “nature’s vitamin pill” for it’s extremely high content of Vitamin C. The camu berry is actually thought to be one of the highest sources of vitamin C on Earth! More that 60 times per serving than the mighty orange.
This superberry grows near the flooded areas in the rainforest and used by the indigenous people of the amazon as a natural remedy for a myriad health issues.
Camu contains potassium, calcium, protein, beta carotene, amino acids and powerful phytochemicals. It said to have anti-viral properties that can treat herpes, cold sores, shingles, and the common cold. It is also used as an energy enhancer and for reducing inflammation in the body. We look forward to more research done on this intriguing new berry.
Lucuma
There was raw honey, grade “B” maple syrup, agave nectar, stevia, and now….Lucuma! Lucuma is a low-glycemic fruit sweetener that not only satisfies our sweet tooth, but boasts many nutritional benefits such as anti-oxidants, beta-carotene, iron, zinc, vitamin B3, calcium and protein. Lucuma is similar to maple syrup in taste, but truly has it’s own unique flavor. Can you say baked goods? I sense experimentation is about to go down!
Maqui
The evergreen shrub is actually what brings forth this special berry. Originating in Patagonia and used by the Mapuche Indians (one of the oldest-living indigenous cultures) for rituals and in sacred ceremonies. It contains the highest amount of antioxidants than any other food that we know about! Please tell me how this has been kept a secret?
Maqui has enormous amounts of vitamin C, calcium, iron and potassium, anti-aging anthocyanins and polyphenols, and anti-inflammatory compounds. It has a fruity flavor with a tart twist (similar to blackberries and acai berries). I think it’s safe to say this food will be next up as a main ingredient in your morning smoothie.
Dragon Fruit
This flame-like fruit is turning heads. And not just for it’s beauty, but also for it’s unusual nutritional benefits including omega 3’s, protein, iron, fiber, vitamins, and minerals.
This fruit springs forth from a night-blooming cactus (and pollinated by fruit bats). Also known as “Pitaya” in it’s native region, this unusual fruit high in polyunsaturated fats (omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids) that lower the risk of cardiovascular disease. It has a sweet flavor similar to pears and kiwifruits. It is low in calories and is packed with vitamin C, magnesium, protein, iron and antioxidants. Lycopene is the reason for the red color which is said to lower prostate cancer. Dragon fruit is also used as a natural detox for the body, clearing it of heavy metal and toxins. Awake the dragon and get super exotic with this strange fruit.
