Whenever we think of gamers, the common image of the awkward nerd sitting in front of the TV with pizza stains on his controller and almost no social life comes up in our minds.
But researchers are now debunking the stereotype that gamers are lazy and losing brain cells on a daily basis. In fact, a study has shown that those who play video games are more attentive and have better control of their emotions.
So all those moments of yelling at the TV and furiously jamming on controller buttons when you face the boss actually worked in your favor.
Furthermore, researchers have also confirmed that gamers are more creative than non-gamers because playing video games actually increases imagination and sharpens creativity. This is mostly due to how video games can develop visual memory and learning skills in players, causing them to become visual thinkers which can heighten creative abilities.
Gamers also develop better eye coordination and multitasking skills because video games, mainly Action Video Games (AVG) in which the player is combating, shooting, and/or racing through various avatars against other players, requires visual focus and being able to do more than one thing at the same time.
This is great news for players of games like Mario Cart because we know all too well the insanely intense concentration you have to have in levels like the dreaded rainbow land in order to get 1st place in the race. Plus having to avoid Wario trying to push you off the race track for no reason requires great multi-tasking and the ability to not want to throw your controller out the window.
So all you gamers out there can finally release the guilt of playing video games and play on without the worry of losing brain cells. The next time you’re tempted to play some Assassin’s Creed, go for it and win one for the team.
