Have you ever walked into a room and felt a little sick? A little queasy? Maybe even a little depressed? It was probably due to an accumulation of stagnant or negative energy in the room.
Negative energy in a space can hinder creativity, productivity and your overall sense of well-being. It can cause you to feel depressed, lazy and even anxious.
Whether you’re moving into a new house or apartment or you’ve invited someone into your space that leaves a lasting energetic funk, it’s a good idea to do an energy clearing.
It’s actually very practical and easy to do.
Step 1: Clean. When I say clean, I mean CLEAN. Think spring cleaning. Take everything out of the closets, fold, put things away neatly, get organizers, color coordinate, sweep, vacuum, mop, dust, wipe, scrub – I think you get it. Just make sure to use all-natural (preferably organic) cleaning products (or you’re actually doing more harm to your health than good).
Step 2: Take out the trash. I mean this literally and metaphorically. Trash can be anything that serves no use in your home anymore – a banana peel, a sour relationship, a toxic friendship, old clothes you haven’t worn in a year, old bills shoved in a drawer, etc. Throw it away, recycle, donate, kick ‘em out – get the yuck out!
Step 3: Use sacred plants. If you are skeptical – simply think about what plants do for us – without them we wouldn’t be able to breathe! Burning certain plants, also known as “smudging” is where sacred smoke is used to clear out stagnant energy and bring in clarity and positive energy.
There are 2 particularly helpful dried plants that have been used for centuries in sacred ceremony to clear out the bad and welcome in the blessings that I recommend for anyone trying to clear their space of negativity: SAGE and SWEETGRASS.
Simply buy a sage bundle or sweetgrass braid, light the tip on fire and blow out the flame. What remains is a powerful and intoxicating fragrance that will push dark energies out of your sacred space, your home, your temple. Make sure to fan the smoke in areas like the corners of rooms, areas of the house that get little to no sunlight, and areas that lack fresh air. Smudge by moving the bundle in small circles in a counter-clockwise motion to clear the energy out. Move the sage or sweetgrass in a clockwise motion to bring in the positive energy and blessings into your space.
Besides these 2 sacred plants, it’s also helpful to have living house plants in every room of your home. They not only provide precious oxygen, but also filter out harmful pollutants in the air.
Step 4: Pray, meditate and set intentions. When your home is all clean and clear – it’s time to set some powerful intentions for your living space. State CLEARLY what you want for your space, who you want in it and what you want out of it.
Our mental state will also manifest into our reality, so it’s vital that we keep a clear and positive mindstate by practicing daily meditation. Bless your home with a verbal prayer to make the space a place of peace, joy and prosperity.
Step 5: Bring in the goodness. The “goodness” is anything you can think of that brings positive feelings of love, laughter, joy and bliss. It can be a good friend, close family, yummy food, warm colors, comfortable furniture, a bouquet of flowers, diffusing essential oils, good music, art and/or dance.
If it feels right, let it join in and be part of your new and improved home.
