Signs You're Trying to Be a Functional Adult but it's Hard

We really do try to be a grown up. We’ve cleaned up our messes, paid our bills, we wear the bougie professional clothes, and partake in more mature conversations. But you know what, it’s not as easy as it looks. It’s really tough to maintain adulthood and avoid childish behavior.

It’s very understandable and it’s apparent that you’re trying to be a functioning adult.

  1. You try to be in bed by 11pm. You can’t help it if you watch too much T.V. that prevents you from falling asleep until 3am.
  2. You try to do your own laundry without waiting weeks. But come on, life gets busy. You’ll wait until your last pair of underwear to do laundry.
  3. You try to buy healthy and well-balanced foods at the grocery store, but you leave with comfort food. It’s totally fine to spoil yourself with Goldfish, Oreos, and shaped SpongeBob Squarepants mac and cheese.
  4. You try to go to a boot camp class. It conflicted with The Bachelorette night at your friend’s house.
  5. You try to read important news outlets. Let’s be real, Buzzfeed is a completely valid news source.
  6. You try to focus on your work. Instagram is a good place to be creative too, ya know.
  7. You try to work out at 5am. You even got a trainer. Let’s face it. How do you even function at that time?
  8. You try to run errands. Shopping at Target is your first priority. Target has everything you could possibly ever need.
  9. You try to live on a budget. Don’t worry girl, you really needed those new shoes. Just don’t plan on eating out for a couple of days. Ends up at Chipotle.
  10. You try to clean and fix up your new home. It generally just stays a mess until you can’t handle it anymore and have to do something about it. Like, call a cheap house cleaner.
  11. You try to cook for yourself. Ordering a pizza or making cereal always comes in clutch though. I mean you could really burn yourself on the stove.
  12. You try not to make relationship mistakes. But, who could blame you. You were having a really depressing day.
  13. You try to plan things ahead. You either end up cancelling them and going back to sleep or showing up late.
  14. You try not to overanalyze your life. Wine, cheese, and crackers are ALWAYS the answer to your problems. It’s all going to be okay.
  15. You try not to watch Netflix on your ex-boyfriend’s old account. Don’t give up the free stuff. It all adds up, and Netflix is very valuable in life.
  16. You try to buy lovely plants to make it seem like you have your life together. You forget to water them, and they die shortly after. It was a good effort at least.
  17. You try to stop going out with your friends. The next morning you are extremely hung-over at work. It’s totally fine because you took good pictures. Just laugh about it.
  18. You try to understand what’s the latest on politics and participate in political debates. Don’t stress, itYou know it was a good attempt.
  19. You try to fill out all of the crucial paperwork and your taxes. But, you have a nervous break down and end up calling up your parents for help. Send help quickly.
  20. You try to pay your electricity and cable bill on time. You know it must have gotten lost in the mail. That’s all.
  21. You try to not to panic when shit gets real. It’s fine life can be a struggle. You need a power nap every once in awhile to calm down.
  22. You try and wake up early. Your bed is just too comfy. Blame it on the weekend. It’s Sunday you deserve to sleep in all day. 

Don’t be too hard on yourself. The fact that you’re trying in the first place is already the first step to being a successful functional adult.
