1. It is what it is.

This is a pleasant, more concise way of saying, “I hate that things are this way and there is nothing I can do about it!” Frankly, I think the phrase should be that instead.

2. Kill two birds with one stone.

This is outdated. Whoever was killing birds with stones was barbaric and this is no longer acceptable in society. Also, did anyone ever actually kill 2 birds with one stone? The only ways it seems possible is if the stone split in half in mid-air or ricocheted off the first bird OR the first dying bird knocked into the second bird somehow murdering it, in which case the stone was not even responsible for killing the second bird.

3. Everything happens for a reason.

This is just something people say to make themselves feel better when they are disappointed, so this quote really should technically be changed to “everything happens for a good reason.” Its current phrasing is kind of like yeah, duh, everything happens for a reason, but that doesn’t make this disappointing thing that happened any better.

4. …And things of that nature

You just read 5 words for no reason. This phrase explains nothing and has to be used after naming at least one descriptive item, so it’s basically just people getting lazy at the end of their thought.

5. Don’t sweat the small stuff.

We say this when we don’t think what the other person is stressed out about is that important, because it’s not happening to us. No one ever responds to this phrase with, “you know, you’re right!” If they considered what they are “sweating” actually “small” they wouldn’t be sweating in the first place! Never say this anyone you care about.

6. That’s the way the cookie crumbles.

Here’s another way to say, “It is what it is.” This should just be changed to “that’s they way the leaves land,” to convey a better visual of unpredictability than someone making a mess because they are eating a cookie sloppily without a napkin.

7. I couldn’t care less.

People mess up this saying and say “I could care less” which actually takes on the opposite meaning and so we just do away with this to avoid confusion and appearing stupid.

8. The time you enjoy wasting is not wasted time.

This quote bothers me because we wouldn’t need a quote about this at all if our society wasn’t so stressed out about everything in the first place. Of course people are worried that they wasted the time they spent enjoying themselves instead of working because they really should have been making those dolla dolla bills ya’ll!

9. Be your own hero.

This is depressing. Everyone should have someone they can look up to other than themselves. Plus, people that admire themselves enough to be their own hero, certainly do not need a phrase like this to encourage them to do so.

10. Life is too short to…

Yes, tragically for some life is too short, but for many of us, it is plenty long and the activities that people partake in are simply coping mechanisms used to pass this seemingly endless amount of time on our hands. Like writing or reading this list.
