10 Practical Ways to Manage Your Anxiety Without Seeing a Shrink

When anxiety strikes it can be all-consuming. It can smother your momentum of the day in a split second and set you back ten steps when it finally clears. Of course one of your options is to go talk to a shrink about managing it, but there are practical options that you can apply to your day-to-day that’ll help you manage your anxiety.  

No person should live in fear of their anxiety popping up at the most inconvenient times. Of course, it’s inevitable that it will happen, but by implementing these things into your schedule you’re creating a mental environment anxiety isn’t used to. 

1. Keep an uncomplicated, transparent routine that you can stick to. 

It can be as simple as each day you wake up, have a bowl of cereal, a cup of coffee, and head to work. Knowing what the next day brings will silence some of your worries and settle your soul with no surprises. 

Keeping it uncomplicated is key because life does throw curve balls… a lot. So keep your routine flexible that you can adjust it accordingly. 

2. Stock up on aromatherapy products and make it a point to use them. 

From spraying a lavender scent on your pillows at night to dabbing yourself with essential oils before you leave for work to filling each room with an essential oil diffuser, there are endless options and styles to choose from. The natural scents help keep your mind calm and at ease. Lavender physically reduces your serum cortisol which is a key player in the body’s response to stress. 

3. Find a meditation that works for you and practice it on the daily. 

Meditation focuses on mindfulness. It personalized so you could think about your inner self or completely lose yourself. You’re training your mind and induces a form of consciousness, which helps you cope with a difficult situation (especially anxiety). No matter how busy your schedule, there is always time to meditate. 

4. Join a yoga group or practice at home on a regular basis.  

Not only is it beneficial as an exercise, but yoga is also beneficial for putting your mind at ease. There are thousands of YouTube videos demonstrating all levels of yoga for you to practice in the comfort of your own home. Yoga will help you create an awareness of your body, mind, emotions, and everything that’s going on around you.  

5. Make time for friends and loved ones even on your busiest afternoon.

It’s as simple as sending out a text to let your bestie know you’re thinking about her. Make plans to grab lunch with your mom and be sure to tell your dad you love him. Keeping family and friends involved in your life will make your heart happy and there’s no better way to fight anxiety than surrounded by people who love you most. You need their support, so don’t shut them out. 

6. Work towards staying organized each day. 

Don’t let your life get messy and complicated– even cleaning your room can have a profound impact on your mood. The days that feel the heaviest aren’t going to be easy so the more prepared you are the faster the anxiety will pass. Worrying about the future is inevitable, but having a full understanding of your goals and what you’re striving for means you’re already creating an environment anxiety can’t flourish in.

7. Reward yourself for continuing to continue. 

Take that extra cash you found in the washing machine to Sephora and buy yourself that highlighter that’s been sitting in your cart for two months. Little things like this will boost your mood and keep you going. It might feel like nothing at the time, but you’ll thank yourself for treating you so good.  

8. Take time out of each day to take care of yourself. 

Your mind has this funny way of making you feel tired and burnt out, even if you barely lifted a finger that day. Put on a face mask, make yourself some tea, and allow yourself to completely relax. You owe it to yourself to put your soul at ease in these moments.  

9. Save up and buy yourself a weighted blanket. 

For those nights when you know it’s going to be a fight to get to sleep, a weighted blanket can give your mind a sense of comfort. It feels like a big weighted hug that fights your anxiety for you. 

10. Accept that it’s all trial and error from here. 

Don’t give up if you don’t find something that works for you right away. It might even take years to get the hang of things. And never be afraid of trying something new even if it’s completely out of your comfort zone. One day you’ll find exactly what it is that keeps your mind level when everything around you seems like it’s spinning. You’ll get there.
