17 Legend (wait for it) Dary Things We Learned From How I Met Your Mother

I would always watch reruns of How I Met Your Mother on TV but once I got Netflix it was one of the first series I binged watched.

I absolutely love the characters and their batter.

Throughout the show we get to watch the characters grow and fall in and out of love. We feel like we’re a part of their life and throughout it all I realized How I Met Your Mother has some serious legend (wait for it) dary lessons.

Here are 15 things I learned from How I Met Your  Mother.

1. Players have a heart too.

Barney. Do I really need to say anything else?

He’s a player throughout the whole show but he always has his friends back and ends up falling for Robin.

He/she may seem like a player but at the end of the day they still have a heart.

2. Everyone has a true love.

The whole series itself is based around Ted searching for his one true love. Through all of his trials and tribulations he eventually finds his wife.

Just like Ted you will eventually find your one true love so give it time. It will happen when you least expect it.

3. No matter the chaos that happens in life you should never give up searching for your one true love.

Ted goes though some crazy things before he finds his wife; an ex locked herself in his apartment and destroyed it, getting left at the altar, and he’s afraid the Captain is going to kill him.

The show just proves that no matter the craziness you will eventually find your love. Just go with the flow and ride that crazy train.

4. You’re going to get your heart broken.

Every single character in the show has gotten their heart broken at least once. It just goes to show that no matter what happens in life you can always count on your heart being broken at least once.

5. A LOT.

Let’s be honest all of the characters besides Marshall and Lily got their heart broken a lot more than once.

Unless you met your true love in high school, you’re going to get your heartbroken more than once and that’s okay.

6. Your friends will always be there to pick you up.

When Lily breaks up with Marshall, he’s totally completely heartbroken, and Ted does everything in his power to get him out of his funk. During all of Ted’s breakups and crazy adventures chasing after girls his friends are always there to go with him or talk him through them. Barney and Ted were almost always willing to be the others wingman.

Whatever you do in life, your friends will always be there for you. They’ll pick up after a breakup, be your wingman to pick someone up, or just be there to talk. They’ve got your back.

7. Surround yourself with people you love.

Those five were never as happy as they were when they were all together and getting along. They all have each other’s best interest at heart because they love one another. They are the true definition of friendship goals.

If you surround yourself with people you love, you will never feel alone. They will be there rooting for you through thick and thin.

8. No matter what happens in your life if you communicate and make time for your friends, you’ll be friends forever.

At the end of the series, Lily and Marshall move to the suburbs, Robin and Barney travel all over the world for her job, and Ted lives with his children in a different suburb but they all stay friends. They all make time/plans with each other to meet up and hangout.

Wherever life takes you and your friend group as long as you communicate and make time for each other every now and then you’ll be friends for life.

9. Give people a second chance.

Lily absolutely hated her dad and wasn’t happy at all when he showed up for Thanksgiving. She eventually gives him another chance and he moves in with them and takes care of Marvin.

It’s always worth giving someone a second chance. You never know exactly why they did what they did (Lily’s dad was just trying to make money for his family). Besides reconnecting with someone you loved can be life changing.

10. Sometimes the correct choice is right in front us.

Ted and Robin. Yeah Robin ends up marrying Barney but they get divorced and by the end of it Ted’s wife has died and he wants to go after Robin again. They have a love that’s undeniable and just like Ted you should pay more attention to what’s in front of you. Everything you’ve been searching for could be right in front of you if you just gave it a chance.

11. You can only be strong by yourself for so long.

Robin was always the strong independent woman on the outside but throughout the show we got to watch her slowly come to terms with the fact that every now and then she couldn’t do it on her own and would turn to her friends for help.

Everyone needs someone to help them out every now and then and it’s okay to let others in. You can’t carry the load by yourself and there’s no one better than family and friends to help carry it.

12. Tell someone how you truly feel.

When Lily comes back from San Francisco, she pretends to be totally okay and that her trip is okay. She eventually just breaks down and tells the truth about how her trip was awful, she missed Marshall, and wants him back. Her waiting for so long and putting on a fake face didn’t do her any good.

Don’t make that same mistake. Life is short so you should tell someone how you truly feel before it’s too late.

13. Always answer a phone call from a loved one.

Marshall ignored a call from his dad because Lily was mad that he was too involved. The next thing he knew Lily was telling him his dad died.

You never know when something will happen to someone you love so share too much with them, answer their calls, and make time for them. You’ll cherish those memories forever.

14. Appreciate what you have.

Marshall has a hard time dealing with his dad’s death and Lily leaving him. Barney is heartbroken when him and Robin breakup.

Things may go array in your lifetime and you might lose a love but appreciate what you have while you do. That appreciate will make those relationships last longer unless it’s truly not meant to be. Plus, if you appreciate that relationship you’ll put more into it and have more memories to look back on.

15. Forgiveness is key.

When Lily comes back from San Francisco, Ted really doesn’t want anything to do with her. He eventually forgives her and they become friends again.

Life is too short to hold grudges so forgive your friends and move on with your life.

16. Sometimes the obvious choice isn’t always right.

I don’t know about you but I was sure that Ted and Victoria were destined to be together. That however sadly didn’t happen.

It just goes to show that sometimes the most obvious choice isn’t always going to happen. That our plans aren’t always going to go right because something better is meant to happen.

17. Things don’t always work out how you planned/wished.

Every year for Halloween Ted dressed up as a ballot and was looking for his slutty pumpkin. It takes multiple Halloweens for him to even find her again and when he does, he realizes he’s dated her before.

This just goes to show you that no matter how much you plan something (finding the girl) it can take years for it to actually happen if it even does. It always teaches us that no matter how much you wish that guy/girl is going to be yours or that you’re going to get that job or promotion that it doesn’t always work out. You just have to pick yourself back up and keep living life.
