OkCupid, Plenty of Fish, and Tinder – oh my!
Online dating (and dating apps) are probably the most common way for millennials to meet new partners and hookups. (I’m pretty sure Match.com said that 1 out of every 3 marriages begins online now?!)
Online dating is great, but there’s also a hella steep learning curve. Here are all the things I’ve learned from 5 years of (mostly terrible) online dating:
-
The first time you meet someone in real life will be absolutely terrifying.
-
Honestly, the second time isn’t all that much better.
-
First dates with guys you met online will never cease to be awkward.
-
People will rarely fit the exact expectation you have of them.
-
Actually, they’ll probably never fit your expectations perfectly.
-
The lack of fitting the expectations? It’ll be the best part of meeting new people.
-
You’ll never know how to dress for a first date.
-
Guys lie about their height. All. The. Fucking. Time.
-
Just because someone makes you laugh via message doesn’t mean they’ll make you laugh in real life.
-
Just because a guy is objectively good looking doesn’t mean that you’ll want to fuck him.
-
Deal breakers become so much more prominent when you’re online dating.
-
Seriously, you’re going to be way pickier.
-
You don’t have to respond to every single message you get.
-
You don’t have to go out on dates with every single guy you message.
-
It’s always better to explain why you don’t want to speak to someone anymore than to ghost.
-
That said, you’ll probably be ghosted on multiple times.
-
You never do get explanations about why guys disappear.
-
You might never actually meet the love of your life on a dating app.
-
Things might really work out with a random guy from Tinder.
So maybe you aren’t super into online dating…but you can always give it a try?
