4 Ways Asperger's Syndrome Affects Individuals and Parents

Ask parents looking after a child with Asperger’s syndrome and you will know how difficult and helpless they feel most times. But the fact is Asperger’s syndrome is not a death sentence but a condition that can be improved with the right program.

The first and most important thing is to confirm if the child has the condition with the Asperger’s test. Check it from here https://aspergerly.com/aspergers-test/ The test will encourage you to go for further diagnosis and seek ways to help the child through life.

There are many ways parents, loved ones and individuals with Asperger’s syndrome are affected by the condition. Many families have to some extent tried to overcome the situation through early intervention programs, which helped the youngster to develop useful skills and abilities.

Ways Asperger’s syndrome can affect an individual and parents

1.    The Aspect of Education

Education is the key to success as most people would say, and all parents want their child to have the best education.  However, Aspies are not dull people. They have normal to above average intelligence so it's wrong to classify them as dull individuals. They only lack focus sometimes because they cannot distinguish between what is relevant or not at that point in time.

However, Aspies often suffer an academic setback. They perform poorly academically because of the fact that they lack some basic learning skills. For instance, an individual with Asperger’s syndrome does not like having contact with other people therefore in group assignment he or she may not want to participate.

This is one major setback they usually face. They prefer to stay isolated and far away from others. Even though they want to associate with others sometimes, their poor social skills limit them. They are often rejected by their peers because of their odd behavior.

Again, children who have Asperger’s syndrome perform better than teens or grown-ups that have the condition. This is because the child at a tender age has a personal teacher he or she works with for the entire session.

Unlike the grown-up with Asperger’s syndrome who has to change classes and come across different subject teachers on a daily basis, they often encounter problems because Aspies are not used to changing routines. They can become extremely angry when a routine is changed or when they have problems completing a given task.

All parents would love to see their child succeed academically. It brings pride and joy to them. However, most Aspies are intelligent but because their interest is limited to few topics and have difficulties learning in large groups, they tend to fail in their studies. They also have poor writing skills and problem-solving abilities.

Another way parents and individuals with Asperger’s syndrome are affected is that most of them are being suspended from school. It happens to most Aspies especially when they display violent behaviors in class. To protect the other children, the school authority may suspend them temporarily or permanently in most cases. There are many occasions where individuals with Asperger’s syndrome are being bullied in school too.

2.    Employment

Everybody wants to be independent and the same thing goes for Aspies. And one important skill required in the workplace is social skills. Aspies have poorly developed social skills. They have difficulties building and sustaining relationships with colleagues and clients.

Most jobs require good social skills, especially areas like marketing and customer service. About 85% of grown-up individuals with Asperger’s syndrome are not in full-time jobs not because they cannot handle the job but because they have challenges being socially acceptable in the task.

However, this doesn’t mean that Aspies cannot be employed. It’s just that most jobs are not suitable for them. They need to find the right job that suits their abilities and strength. Parents who want their child to be employed in a particular job of their dreams end up being disappointed.

3.    Health issues

Aspies need support and attention. They need lots of love and affection too. Unfortunately, not all of them get the attention and care they seek and this can cause them to experience mental health issues.

For youngsters with Asperger’s syndrome, health issues can be highly significant. They have challenges interacting with doctors, dentists or go for routine checkups. In addition, other issues also contribute to poor health like poor diet and lack of exercise.

4.     Bullying

Bullying is a very serious and common problem that individuals with Asperger’s syndrome face both at school and in the workplace. At schools, even though there is a good anti-bullying program, students with special needs still fall victim.

Parents and families of individuals with Asperger’s syndrome are affected by the condition. That is why it is very important to have the Aspies test conducted to start assisting the child early in life. No parent will be happy to see their child perform poorly academically or helpless in situations where he or she is being bullied in school.
