Sure, when you live in an apartment there is always someone to fix the dishwasher when it breaks, but moving out and buying your own house is pretty awesome! Aside from the obvious reasons owning your own home rocks (like building equity, having a backyard, or having a space to call your own), here are 5 reasons you may not have thought of that make buying a house the best decision you could make:
1. You don't have to decorate like a 'normal' person.
Want to paint your bedroom walls hot pink? Rip up the carpet and paint the sub floor? Add stenciled designs to your cabinets? Have your friends over to paint a mural on the living room wall? Concrete over your counter tops? You can do all that! There's no limit to what you can do with your own home, and no one to tell you not to follow your heart and creative spirit.
2. You can be as loud as you want (within reason).
Did you have a bad day and need to scream it out? Like to listen to music so loud it makes your ears ring while you're cleaning? How about have some friends over to play a game of Speak Out and laugh so hard your abs are sore the next day? Good news! You can do all that too! Sure, if you're TOO loud, TOO late at night, the neighbors might complain. But you don't share walls, floors, or ceilings with anyone anymore, so your everyday noise isn't going to be driving Old Mrs. Betty upstairs bonkers anymore.
3. Routine chores are actually workouts in disguise.
You own your own home now, which means there's no one else to come mow the lawn or clean out the gutters for you. How about trim the tree branches and haul them off to the woodpile? All that yard work you now have to do to keep your house looking spiffy is actually a pretty good workout! The best part is, after you kill two birds with one stone by working out while doing chores, you have no reason not to spend the rest of your evening curled up on the couch watching Netflix!
4. Speaking of Netflix, you can choose your own internet provider.
Everyone knows that most apartment complexes only have one choice for internet service, and it's usually the least reliable and most expensive provider in town. Now that you own your own home, you can shop around and find the best deals! And if there's two weeks of daily internet outages in a row, you are no longer limited to simply calling and complaining — you can actually follow through on that threat to find a new provider!
5. You own a freaking house!
It seems obvious, but until you sign those papers and move in you don't realize how profound it is to own an entire building. It's your very own sanctuary from the world and you can turn it into whatever you need it to be to make YOU happy… who cares what anyone else thinks, they didn't just sign their life away to live there!
