When I came to college, I wasn't 100% sure greek life was for me. I had always heard terrible stories of hazing and stuck up girls. Also living with all girls all the time didn't thrill me. However, my roommate convinced me to try it so we went together to the "meet the greeks cookout." I figured it was worth a try and if I hated it I didn't have to continue. Recruitment time came around and that meant dressing up for 9 hours a day of talking to strangers about the same things over and over. I remember hearing the phrases "you will find your home" and "you will find your bridesmaids" and I thought to myself they were over exaggerating this whole process.
It got upsetting seeing I wasn't asked back to certain sororities, even though I didn't think that was my "home." I remember being in sisterhood round in a certain sorority and being 110% sure this is where I belonged. The next night on pref night I found out they had dropped me. I considered dropping out of recruitment, but a friend convinced me to stick it out and see how things go. On bid day, I ended up "running home" to a different sorority who I knew nobody in. If you are in greek life you understand how bad it feels when you are running home and have nobody to run to.
I was so confused and upset because it seemed everyone was having the best day ever, and mine seemed very awkward. I had awhile to figure out if I wanted to drop, so I started going to things more. Soon I found what everyone had been talking about. I found my bridesmaids, my people, the people I'm not sure how I ever lived without prior to college. Not only are they my sisters, but my best friends and I didn't think it was possible to have such amazing friends since I didn't have many girlfriends in high school.
The moral of this story is: you will find your home and in your home you find your place and why you were meant to be there. And if you are lucky (like I was) you will find your bridesmaids and constantly ask yourself how you ever lived without them. Greek life isn't the stereotype and you get the best feeling ever when you find your home away from home.
