Fans are shocked to see the two rap females credited side to side but we gotta admit, it’s about damn time. Minaj is gearing up to drop her latest studio album and she’s on a public relations “calling out her haters” tour currently. The beat, produced by Big Juice and DJ Durel, showcases a dreamy trap-esque feel but also has a soft playful vibe to it. The Migos take the first two verses and the chorus followed by Cardi B on the third verse. The song is about motorbikes, moving faster than your haters, and of course the ratchet flossing. Cardi teases that she and Offset should release “that porn” then continues on to explain how she’s not about that NYC life that much these days. She could easily just hop in her Porshe. Nicki takes verse number four featuring two different flows. She purposely dances around punchlines that could clearly be thrown towards Cardi- her seeming rival on the track. “My crown won’t fit on ya bum ass lace fronts” Nah. Nicki instead raps on a close line that sounds like it could be mistaken as a diss, super classy. She goes “I can actually afford to get a pink Bugatti” with the last line being “Bitch you my son, go sit on the potty”. The track is set to be featured on Culture II, the Migos’ upcoming album. It sounds like a battle of lace fronts to us. Let’s break down some of the other lyrics of the song:
Verse 1- Quavo
“Xans, Perky, check (yeah), Bill Belichick, Take the air out the ball, just so I can flex”.
Belichick is the coach for the New England Patriots and Quavo is making reference to the Deflate-gate scandal that faced the team and its quarterback Tom Brady back in 2015. One could argue Quavo is also attempting to shine a light on the current controversy regarding NFL coaches and owners in the wake of the protest of the National Anthem. Many have argued that the initial cause for the protest has been lost. Colin Kaepernick began knelling during the National Anthem last season to stand up against the treatment of Black male Americans and police brutality.
‘I wish my grandma could see me (grandma). Take away, pain ain’t easy (pain). That’s why I fire up a bleezy (fire). Niggas not cappin‘ this season.’
He closes the verse with a direct reference to Kaepernick who has recently filed grievance against the entire NFL organization. Talk about pun intended!
Verse 3- Cardi B
“So tell me, have you seen her?. Let me wrap my weave up. I’m the trap Selena. Dame más gasolina.”
Cardi is paying homage in this verse to Selena Quintanilla or Selena Gomez? Either one kind of fits. Quintanilla will receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Nov 3rd. We think Cardi is speaking to her Latino female roots and also maybe a future Hollywood Star of her own.
Verse 4- Nicki Minaj
“You see them stats, you know, what I am about. I am the champ, I’m Iron Mike in a bout.”
She’s still talking to her supposed haters. Nicki has routinely said she feels she has never gotten the same passes as her male counterparts in the industry. She compares herself to Mike Tyson, the heavyweight champ. Is she going to bite someone’s ear off though? Please don’t let it be Cardi’s.
“This Givenchy is custom made, now you can’t get it at Saks though. I don’t work in no office, but they copyin‘ and that’s facts though. I ain’t tryna be violent, but if Nicki on it, it slaps, ho. Get you lined for that paper like a loose leaf when that strap blow.”
The Queen of shade throwing continues to upgrade the floss level of the track, being the longest active artist on the song, she is clearly the richest. She wears Givenchy and you can’t get it at Saks. There aren’t any females at the level of Nicki but Cardi and Remy give her a run for her money. It’s a battle of the boroughs. Is the Queen feeling a little threatened? Bodak Yellow is still topping the charts. It’s easy to be a winner when no one is competing but you.
“Quavo the QB, I’m Nick Lombardi.”
Is Nicki also bring awareness to the culture? Calling herself Nick Lombardi in reference to Vince Lombardi? Lombardi was an NFL player and coach who died in 1970. The Super Bowl trophy is named after him. Nicki is trying to say that if anyone like Cardi has a lane it is only because she drove down it first. She could take credit for female rappers coming down the pipeline because she opened a lot of doors. The line ties back to the ongoing social protest regarding the boycott of the NFL season.
