My Heart Will Never Forget You

How strange it is, that after all this time, the loving and fighting…it’s like we never even knew each other at all.

It’s interesting to think about how people who used to be everything to us can become nothing again just like that. How we learn to forget…how sometimes we even force forgetting.

The after thoughts always tell you more than the relationship ever could – that anguish is a better teacher than joy.

Do you ever really forget your lovers’ birthdays, or all your first times, intimate and not?

Do your anniversaries ever become normal days of the year again? Are the things you did and promises you made ever really neutralized?

Do they become void now that you’re broken up or do you decidedly ignore them because there’s simply no other choice?

The mind tells you to go on, and your heart follows the mind like an innocent little child.

Maybe it’s just that you either love someone, in some way, forever or you never really loved them at all.

Maybe it’s just that we’re all at the centers of our own individual universes, and sometimes they overlap with other people’s, and that small bit of intersection leaves some part of us forever changed.

The collision of someone’s universe into ours can wreck us, change us, shift us. Sometimes we merge into one, and other times we rescind because we can’t seem to find common ground. We break up.

We become strangers again, but this time with memories…and that’s beautiful.

There is something so delicate about this time of being strangers again — where we don’t speak to one another but we still have an intertwined silk thread of remembrance and recognition between us.

And if nothing ever comes out of it, at least we have known this feeling, this wonderful undying optimism found in love…the one that changes us forever. We can keep this flicker of optimism burning to draw in from during our darkest hour like an aureate ray of sun.

Do you think there is ever a possibility of you and me? Is that too much to hope for? Will people find me delusional if I said I still find solace in our memories together?

No matter what happens, I’ll always be glad to know that someone like you crashed into me in this wide world.
