I’d like to start off by saying that I personally love Selena Gomez and her music. I have been a die hard fan for Selena since 2009 when she started out her own pop band. Ever since then you could always find some Selena in my music play-lists. Especially as of lately, her new album Revival is on FIRE. Now I not only admire Selena for her talent as an actress and a song writer, but because she has always been a big advocate on body image and loving yourself.
Do we not all remember earlier this year in April when photos of Selena in Mexico wearing that itty bitty pink bikini surfaced all over the internet and paparazzi everywhere were body shaming Selena for putting on some weight? “There’s not a ton of material to her ensemble, but what there is — is definitely working overtime to cover the 22-year-old’s assets. Things are getting thick down in Mexico.” TMZ wrote. As we remember this I’d like to remind you how fabulously she handled this by shutting down all these negative comments with her Instagram post of a new swim suit shot, saying she loved how she looked. Yay Selena! As said Selena Gomez is on loving yourself and not putting yourself down for any reason.
That being said I can’t help but be a little disappointed in some of the lyrics in her song Perfect, that’s on her new album Revival. Yes I get that its just some lyrics in a song, but Selena being loved by may teenage and pre-teen girls around the world is very influential to her fans. So that being said those lyrics, could affect how these girls perceive things. This song is about a guy Selena is seeing, and that guy is also seeing another girl. Selena goes to state in her song that it’s obvious when he is thinking about this other girl, and she can taste her lipstick on him and smell her perfume. All signs he’s seeing someone else. The part that I find absolutely infuriating is in all this Selena says “Maybe I should be more like her” multiple times throughout the song.
Why does this infuriate me so much? Well first of all it’s sending a message to girls that hey we need to change ourselves for guys so they like us more, or so maybe they won’t cheat on us. If Selena Gomez wants to be more like some other girl cause this guy shes with is cheating on her, why shouldn’t I? Having been in this situation before and felt this way, I know where Selena is coming from but knowing that she has lots of younger fans who look up to her and saying that? I just see it as harmful to some girls self image and it having an effect on how they would act in future relationship. Instead of just dumping the guy and moving on, they’d try to be more like the other girl he’s seeing in hopes maybe then he’ll remain faithful to them. Selena you’re a role model, and people look up to you. Yes again I get this is just one song and one line in the lyrics, but things like this can make a difference.
Don’t get me wrong, I like the song, and I still love Selena but these lyrics infuriate me to no end.
