To My Freshman Roommate

Let me start by saying thank you. Thank you for being the person you are. You were the first roommate I had and honestly the best. I am not sure how we got so lucky, because many people never speak to their freshmen roommates again. You and I are another story though we have grown together over the last four years even though we have had different friends and roommates.

No, we were not originally assigned as roommates, but when I moved into your room on that hot September day you welcomed me with open arms. We instantly became close telling each other all sorts of stories and sharing the college experience together. Not realizing that we would be friends in the years to come. There was never a dull moment in that room as we studied, listened to music and talked about life.

We seemed to take each other on every adventure that we went on. Weather it was just a trip to the dining hall or a late-night trip to Walmart. I remember all the Korean Dramas and country music we would play, because I was a country girl and you were not. You loved Korean Dramas but I did not. We learned to compromise and love the flaws that the other had. You taught me the importance of embracing different people and cultures.

Although, we did not hang out nearly as much as freshman year you will always have a special place in my heart, because you were my first roommate and my first friend in college. You taught me life lessons and I hope I did as well.

Every time I think of you I smile and thank God for the opportunity to know you. You had this way of making everything seem okay even when it wasn’t. We would lay in our beds across from one another and talk about our days and lives. We would have those deep 1 am conversations from the comfort of a dorm room on the third floor.

No matter where life leads us we will always be in each other’s hearts. You are now on the other side of the world, and we do not talk much but when we do it’s like we never stopped. I hope that you continue to grow and do great things.
