13 Reasons Why Your Sister Will Always Be Your Best Friend

Whether she’s older or younger, growing up with a sister is a crazy experience filled with lots of laughter and fights over clothes. She’s the first girl you’ve ever talked to about love, boys, and your hopes & dreams. You guys probably have pictures together as little girls wearing matching dresses, fake smiling into the camera, holding back your urge to push her off your shoulder. And then there’s the genuine picture in an old photo album of you two holding baby dolls with your heads tilted back in a fit of laughter.

Through all of the ups and downs, your sister has been there with you through it all. Friends may come and go, but your sister has been there from the beginning of life, and she’ll be there till the end.

Here are 13 reasons why your sister is actually your best friend:

1. You know her story like the back of your hand.

Since you’ve been together from the time you were in diapers, you know every little detail of her entire life. She was there when you were had that unspeakably disastrous punk phase, and you were there to watch her experiment with purple makeup. These silly parts of life bring you closer than you can ever be with a regular friend.

2. The brutal honesty you share with each other strengthens your bond.

It might ruin a friendship, but you and your sister have been through so many fights, nothing offends you anymore. You can tell her like it is, and she’ll thank you for saving her from walking out of the house in the tacky trend du jour.

3. You can keep each other entertained in long car rides and flights like it’s nobody’s business.

Your sister has been your partner in crime from (literally) day 1, and she knows how to keep you from dying of boredom on that endless ride to the Grand Canyon or Disney World. You had a player 2 in Mario Kart, or you made up ridiculous games that you’ll never be able to forget.

4. When your friends couldn’t come over, you had an instant playmate or sleepover buddy.

And from those play dates and sleepovers you created too many inside jokes and memories to count. Whenever you need some cheering up, your sister knows better than anyone to remind you of that time you guys competed to see who could fit more popcorn in their mouth, or how hard you laughed when your mom couldn’t pronounce the name of your favorite childhood band.

5. The competitive drive between you two only pushes each other to succeed.

Most siblings have a natural rivalry to one-up the other. You and your sister aren’t out to get one another, you want to see your sister grow and succeed. So when you come home with great college acceptance letters or amazing grades, you’ve raised her standards and set an example of achievement.

6. You bond over the same TV shows, movies, and songs.

Most of your conversations consist of quotes and references from The Parent Trap or Catfish: The TV Show. And your weekends together revolve around binge watching Degrassi, or listening to throwbacks from the ‘90s.

7. She’s the only one who understands why your family is so weird.

You’ve grown up seeing your parents attempt to dance at your Sweet Sixteen, or receiving your relatives’ ridiculous chain e-mails. If you tried to explain your family to anyone else they just wouldn’t understand the struggle.

8. You can give each other “the look,” and know exactly what the other is thinking.

Whether that look means, “oh my god we’re definitely getting ice cream right now,” or “yes, I totally think that guy is a complete weirdo, too,” you always know what she’s thinking.

9. Your mutual obsession over the family pet is unparalleled by anything else.

You’ve given your dog/cat so many strange names you can’t help but burst out laughing when you see your pet. Your sister has never ceased to amaze you with how twisted and strange she can make those names.

10. The advice you give each other is completely sincere and is given with your best intentions in mind.

Unless you’re twins, you and your sister grew up a few years apart, so there’s no competition for the same boys, jobs, or friends. Whether you’re getting dressed up for an interview or a date, your sister will unabashedly tell you how good or bad you look.

11. You share a closet, and even if she steals your clothes (or vice versa), you know it’s right down the hall and you’ll get it back eventually.

Friends might be polite about lending clothes, but your sister will come into your room and unapologetically steal half your closet. You’ll get it back eventually, and you might yell at her for it, but you still love her anyway.

12. You know her most secret secrets.

You and your sister share things that you couldn’t possibly tell anyone else. She knows you too well. Your friends might take things the wrong way, or use your secrets against you, but your sister is your go-to confidant no matter what.

13. Your differences bring you closer together.

You probably have different goals in life, and could be total opposites. Although your interests are most similar to those of your friends, the differences between you and your sister only deepens your friendship. You loose friendships over fights and difference, but those things only make you love your sister more.
