6 Date Night Movies to Get Your Heart Racing

Want to make your next date night something to remember? Tune into a riveting horror movie with some great jump scares. Or maybe you’d prefer a romantic flick with a moral message or an edge-of-your-seat thriller.

Whatever your yen, the following six classics guarantee a fantastic night with your sweetheart.

1. Kill Bill

What would you do if someone tried to murder you on the day of your wedding? If you’re Uma Thurman, you don’t forgive or forget. This martial arts classic directed by the inimitable Quentin Tarantino offers a full four hours of viewing entertainment if you watch the entire installment.

Something about a sword-wielding woman with a thirst for vengeance captivates the imagination. The dialogue takes center stage, though — especially in the second installment. Rustle up some extra snacks and settle in for the long haul.

2. Friday the 13th — the 1980s Version

This touching tribute shows a mother’s love knows no limits — including murder. You and your SO can relive your favorite summer camp memories with this classic. Filmed in New Jersey, superstar Kevin Bacon got his cinematic start meeting his end in this flick.

When it comes to jump-scares, “Friday the 13th” offers plenty. If you’re planning a trip down to a lakeside cabin this fall, don’t forget to bring this movie with you.

  1. Brokeback Mountain

It doesn’t matter if you and your SO are straight or part of the LGBTQIA community. This story of forbidden love will make you feel for the characters and the challenges they face.

In an era where crimes against people based upon their sexual orientation are on the rise, this movie serves as a powerful reminder of the dangers of hate. Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal sizzle as star-crossed lovers who find comfort in each other’s arm in the Montana wilderness. While the ending may break your heart, it’s also a reminder of how fortunate you are to love the one you’re with.

4. The Silence of the Lambs

“Hello, Clarice.”

Even people who haven’t seen this thriller know this famous line delivered by Anthony Hopkins. When a killer decides to make a bodysuit out of his victims, the FBI races to catch them. Part of their strategy involves picking the brain of one of the nation’s most notorious criminal masterminds.

Hopkins, who plays sociopathic genius and murderer Hannibal Lector, manages to create intense on-screen chemistry with Jody Foster, who plays FBI agent-in-training Clarice Starling. His compelling performance steams up the screen even though he spends most of the film in an institutional jumpsuit. This leads audiences to cheer one of the best escapes in movie history — just in time to meet an old friend for dinner.

5. The Shawshank Redemption

Morgan Freeman shines as Red, “the only guilty man” in Shawshank prison, opposite Tim Robbins as Andy Dufresne.

While “The Shawshank Redemption” sheds sobering light on the reality of life behind bars, it celebrates the indomitable nature of the human spirit. It doesn’t matter if you’re tuning in for the first time or the hundredth — the ending makes you get a little something in your eye. Keep tissues handy!

6. Shaun of the Dead

If you need a little levity between jump-scares, Simon Pegg delivers his signature British humor while fighting zombies and downing pints in this horror-comedy. Plus, you still get to enjoy plenty of gore galore in a cinematic romp at the top of many a movie lover’s list.

Pegg plays an electronics store clerk living a slacker’s existence in a flat with his roommate and girlfriend when the zombie apocalypse takes London. Suddenly, Shaun becomes an unlikely hero, battling to keep his group of friends safe.

Horror writer extraordinaire Stephen King gave this flick a 10/10 on the fun scale and quipped “Shaun of the Dead” is sure to become a cult classic. You and your SO will laugh, scream and have an uproariously good time.
