Feminism and the Myth of the “Other Girls”

And this is all based on, again, arbitrary standards about what “like women” means. There’s no inherent reason that any of these feminine traits needs to be feminine, except that we as a society have decided that it is so.

When we try to put ourselves aside from “Feminine,” we both degrade each other and limit ourselves. We make it easier for women to be shamed by reinforcing the idea that womanhood is shameful. And then we keep ourselves from exploring any interests that might fit into that category of shame.

Screw Not Being Like Other Woman. Be like the person you are. Embrace all aspects of yourself–and recognize that no one fits the cookie cutter definition of Woman, because there is no cookie cutter definition. Those Other Women have all the depth of every person you have ever known and loved.

In the ideal world, eventually people of any gender will be equally comfortable delving into their own interests. Whether masculine or feminine or both or neither, and no one will be shamed or judged for any of it.
