What Women Want: How Any Man Can Ace a Date Night at Home

At-home date nights have become increasingly more common over the past few months and with that comes some much-needed preparation in order to make the most out of it. It’s important to make your living space feel special and different from your typical everyday environment. This can be tricky, and if you’re a man who struggles with planning romantic activities with your partner, you’re certainly not alone. Here are some easy tips for the men to get you started in the right direction and help ace your date night at home.

Set the mood

When it comes to at-home date nights, the environment is everything for us. We want the moment to feel special. Since you are at home and not out in public, there is more of an emphasis on creating the atmosphere rather than simply fitting into a pre-existing one. With that said, a great first place to start is with music and lighting. Depending on the mood you’re trying to set, certain kinds of music and lighting can be an initial starting point for you to pique our emotions.

When you’re going for a more intimate date, elect for some slower romantic music and dim the lights. On the other hand, for a more laid back mood, opt for some more upbeat music. You can even ask us who our favorite artist is and sprinkle in some of their songs as well, we love that! Look into one of our favorite mood guides here for some more inspiration.

Eliminate distractions

It can be easy to detect when a date is not paying attention. Particularly, when you’re at home in a more intimate setting, it should be a priority to focus solely on us. It can be easy to become distracted in your home with your phone, pets, and anything else that can catch a glimpse of your attention.

From personal experience, I’ve had a date check his phone 5 times within the first 15 minutes. I immediately felt less important and was checked out myself. Body language can say a lot, and even the small habits we have with our phones can come across as rude.

Some simple tips that we always recommend to men are to begin the date with your devices down in order to connect face-to-face. After all, the whole point of the date night is to connect with your partner on a deeper level, so placing phones and devices to the side will help avoid becoming distracted. Another aspect to hone in on is your hearing. Many distracted men have selective hearing sometimes, so really be self-aware of this and do your best to listen and be engaged with us when you have a conversation.

Have a plan

Nothing is more attractive than when a man has a plan and is ready to stick to it. This will show extreme organizational skills, motivation, and dedication to planning the best possible date night for us. If you find yourself struggling to come up with some ideas on what to do and how soon to start planning it, don’t fret.

If you’re out of ideas, try something new that would normally be out of you and your partner’s comfort zone. Whether that be starting a cooking class together online or turning your backyard into a mini oasis, thinking outside of the box for a home date will surely set it apart from others.

Another way to show us you care is to create a night we will remember and that is unique to us. Below, we listed some of our favorites:

● Plan our next trip: If your relationship is pretty serious, take the time at home to plan out your next trip as a couple after the pandemic. Hand-in-hand planning of your next getaway is great for communication and can make the actual trip itself more memorable.

● Make us a playlist: Music is such a unique way for people to bond, particularly those in relationships, so creating a customized playlist to our enjoyment will definitely have your date feeling special and loved. This can be perfect to throw on around the house during the night!
● Create a special cocktail: Mixology is a rare, yet valuable talent that is an attractive and charming skill. If this is something you want to experiment with, dedicate a special cocktail recipe just for us and fix it up. If you need help with this, search for some inspiration online and get your alcohol delivered to your house so you can make this process as seamless as possible.

Be prepared to talk

It may come as no surprise but a home date night will typically have more emphasis on communication and conversation since it will just be you two. If you struggle with this aspect of dating and relationships, this is a chance for you to work on this integral skill.

If your date night is the first date, this can be a great time to focus on communication and how you speak to us. Develop conversation starters and bring them to the table so you’ll be able to have a free-flowing conversation to get to know her. And while shy guys have their charm, you should at least be ready to open up to us a little bit.

As we mentioned before, it’s just as important to listen as well. Sure it’s essential to come prepared with some interesting content to chat about, but listening is key too. Two-sided conversations you’ll come to realize are best for relationship development.

As you prepare for your date night, be sure to keep these concepts in mind. Date nights in quarantine can certainly be tough but they can also be effective too. For more tips on dating be sure to follow our blog to stay up to date with all our latest content!
