10 New Makeup Trends and Products to Try for Spring 2022

Y2K is back (kinda).

2021 focused mainly on 80s and 90s makeup, while the spring of 2022 will bring out trends from Y2K. Thankfully, you may be able to recycle some of the products you used and incorporate them in these new looks.

1. Pinks

2021 mainly focused on cool tones such as blues, greys, and purples. For this season, pink is in. This could mean eyeshadow, eyeliner, bright lips, and everything in between. Kylie Cosmetics has introduced a Valentine’s Day collection that will exceed your wildest pink fantasies.

2. Heavy Blush

Last season, draped blush was in. What is draped blush, you may ask? It’s all in the placement. In short, draped blush is applied where contour is usually applied – a little lower than the apple of your cheekbones. This season, take it to the next level, and don’t be scared to apply a little extra! FENTY BEAUTY (shout out to Rihanna) released a new collection of vibrant blushes that will be perfect for this look.

3. Glossy Lips

In line with Y2K fashion, glossy lips will be making a comeback. Not only that, e.l.f. Cosmetics just launched a Dunkin’ Donuts collab that features two new gloss colors. The shades are simply labeled Dunkin’ Orange and Dunkin’ Pink to follow the iconic colors of the coffee and donut shop franchise.

4. Color Coordination

This season, try and purchase some clothes that match the color of your makeup. If you can, try and get an eyeshadow palette that has at least one pan of every color, that way you’ll have each one right at the tip of your fingers. Juvia’s Place just released a new 30-color shadow palette with both matte and shimmer options that are bound to match up with the main color in whatever outfit you’re wearing.

5. Neon Liners

Using neon eyeliner is hands-down one of the easiest ways to make it look like you spent way longer on your makeup than you actually did. Morphe’s Lucky Charms collab has a 6-color set of vibrant liners that will bring a pop of color to your eyes in just a few seconds.

6. Double Winged Liner

If you’re lucky enough to have a steady hand when it comes to applying winged liner, this trend is for you. If not, this would be a great time to learn! Give it a go with the new Benefit Cosmetics precision waterproof liquid eyeliner. For examples of double-winged eyeliner, Pinterest is a great place to look, as well as YouTube for tutorials.

7. Thin/Light Eyebrows

If there’s one thing makeup lovers know, it’s that eyebrow trends come and go in the blink of an eye. Recent trends included fluffy brows, natural brows, thick brows… And now, thin brows are back (think younger Christina Aguilera on the red carpet). If you decide to go with this trend, just know that it does take a fairly long time for brows to grow back to their natural shape. However, if you do want to participate, FLOWER Beauty has introduced a new brow pencil with a thin tip that will give you that precision needed for thin brows.

8. Popping Inner Corner

This may be one of the easiest (and quickest) trends to do. To get that wide-awake, ready-for-the-day look, a light highlighter or light silver eyeshadow will be your best bet. To achieve the look, I would recommend ColourPop’s Super Shock Highlight in shade Monster.

9. Under Eye Placement

This trend is perfect for a night on the town. If you’re looking for a wow factor, this is the way to do it. There’s a look called the reverse cat eye which is exactly what it sounds like – you do your winged eyeliner under your eye instead of on your eyelid. Remember, you don’t have to make it as thick – you only need a thin line. KIKO Milano has a khol liner with a fine tip for those thinner lines you’ll need.

10. Face Gems

If you’re really looking to branch out, this trend is for you. However, this won’t work with any gems you find – make sure you grab ones that are specific for your face or body. Benefit Cosmetics sells face and body gems that will fit any look you’re going for.

Makeup trends come and go quickly – that’s what makes them fun. If you’re ready to jump into the looks, you can also Google “Y2K fashion and makeup” and really see how Y2K affected the beauty world.

Growing up in the ’00s, there were plenty of things we all did (whether we want to admit it or not). There we foods we all obsessed over, shows we couldn’t stop watching, and it’s safe to say everyone had an embarrassing AIM screenname we would never reveal to our boss today.  While we look back in shame, those were the best of times–where literally everything was safe and no one elected a Cheeto as President of the United States.

2. Spending every weekend at the mall, but you only had $20 so you would buy ONE t-shirt from Hollister or Abercrombie.

3. Scrunched hair with straight bangs was hot.

Everyone went through an emo/scene phase at one point in their life. Whether it was Taking Back Sunday, or those choppy cover-the-eye bangs—we all went through those few years where we edited all of our pictures with skulls and sad quotes and used way too much eyeliner for our liking. But, we all know, emo kids grow up to be bad-ass, chic rockstars. Therefore, to make you all feel better about your own emo pictures you hide in your closet, BuzzFeed users are sharing their “glow-ups” to show that we’ve all been there.

22 Nostalgic Pictures That Remind Us All That The Internet Used To The Best Place On Earth

While we all may live on the Internet now 24/7, thanks to our cell phones and social media, there was a time we had just learned what the Internet even was. The good old days of dial-up service and hardly any websites, it was a time that was much simpler–and much happier.

Feel old yet?

If You Were Born Between 1977-1985, You’re Not A ‘Millennial’ Anymore, You’re A ‘Xennial’

Millennials get a bad rap for being entitled, lazy, immature, obsessed with selfies and social media, and so on. They’re associated with the rise of the internet and smartphones and resulting cultural outcroppings of these technological advancements. But generational distinctions are imprecise and subject to debate, and what we typically consider to be Millennials actually contains a subsection of somewhat older Millennials that are culturally distinct from their younger brethren.

Sandwiched between Gen-Xers and Millennials, ‘Xennials’ are typically classified as those being born between 1977 and 1985. They’re a microgeneration that copes with the clash between Gen-X’s cynicism and Millennial optimism.

Giphy

Millennials were born between 1981 and 1996 and Gen-Xers were born between 1965 and 1980. The term ‘Xennial’ to describe the generation on the cusp of the two first appeared in GOOD magazine as a way to define the older Millennials who shared a different experience than the rest of the generation growing up.

According to Notable Life,

The term is a solution to recent complaints by “mature millennials” that they don’t feel as though they fit the avocado-eating, Snapchat-loving mold of the endlessly dissected generation — but also don’t really remember the first Star Wars movies.

Xennials had an analog childhood before riding the digital wave into the 21st century. Xennials were fully aware of the shifting technological landscape, going from a time when the internet didn’t exist, to suffering through the dial-up era, to embracing the latest social media platforms. They were also in early adulthood during the September 11th terrorist attacks, while many Millennials were still in elementary and high school.

Xennials are also called “the Oregon Trail Generation” because of how widespread the educational game was in the “cutting-edge” computer labs they had in elementary and high school.

Giphy

There are plenty of things Xennials remember that are just fuzzy memories to Millennials. Things like pay phones, landlines, and sitting through countless 1-800-COLLECT commercials.

The landline wars were intense until cell phones came along, and Xennials remember having to talk to their friends’ parents on the phone before reaching their friends. Call waiting and extra phone lines were godsends for the Xennial generation.

And watching Jurassic Park in theaters and memorizing Clueless.

Giphy

Mean Girls may be the defining women’s movie for Millennials, but Xennial women grew up watching Clueless on repeat at slumber parties. And the cutting-edge computer-generated dinosaurs in Jurassic Park were truly revolutionary on the big screen. Goonies, Heathers and Dazed And Confused were also seminal Xennial coming-of-age movies.

Being a little too old for Pokémon and Neopets.

Giphy

These pop culture phenomena took off a little too late to get Xennials on board.

Getting that first clunky cell phone in their teens or 20s that was “for emergencies.”

Giphy

Ah, those indestructible Nokia phones! Before Temple Run and Candy Crush, Xennials killed time by trying to beat their high score on Snake.

Coping with T9 texting was a real struggle for Xennials.

Sure, Millennials are the generation that turned texting into an artform, but Xennials were the pioneers who had to really work to make texting happen.

And connecting with friends on AIM changed Xennial social life.

Giphy

Online chat application like AOL’s Instant Messenger and ICQ allowed young Xennials to socialize online for the first time.

Looking things up in encyclopedias, and later, Encarta is an experience every Xennial remembers.

Xennials went to school before web-based reference sources like Wikipedia, and many still remember having to use the card catalog at the library.

And the hole in the ozone layer and acid rain were the most critical environmental threats.

Giphy

Before global warming reached a boiling point, acid rain and the hole in the ozone layer were some of the biggest man-made threats to life on earth.

Xennials will remember when this was the hottest boy band around.

Xennials loved Back Street Boys and N’Sync, but the New Kids On The Block were the original boy band.

And trying to hit “record” at the exact right time to snag the song of the moment off of the radio to make your crush that mixtape was a Xennial thing.

Giphy

Well before MP3s became a thing, CDs were a welcome change for Xennials, who grew up with cassettes and top-40 radio stations that had actual human DJs.

Also MTV showed mostly music videos.

Giphy

Today, MTV hosts a raft of original programming, but Xennials remember a time when you could tune in to MTV and either see a music video or a VJ introducing one.

And the O.J. Simpson Bronco chase and double murder trial divided America on racial lines.

Giphy

It was called the “Trial Of The Century” and helped launch the Kardashian’s father to fame (or infamy). News coverage of the double murder trial was non-stop and his acquittal rocked the nation.

Xennials also remember when Columbine was the first and only shocking school shooting.

Wikipedia

Long before the current epidemic of gun violence plaguing U.S. schools, the mass shooting at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado shocked the country. Ask a Xennial and they can probably tell you where they were when they heard the news.
