Bacardi Spiced Palmer – Labor Day’s Must-Have Cocktail

It’s a party with Bacardi…

Labor Day is a day to be with family and friends and drink and eat incredible foods. Hot dogs, hamburgers, cookouts, desserts, cocktails, you name it. However you celebrate, you’re almost always guaranteed to have a drink in your hand. For my over-21 friends, the Bacardi Spiced Palmer needs to be in your cup.

Bacardi is a rum company that was established in 1862 and features rum that is aged for at least 10 years. The company produced dark, gold, and white rum, which are good for multiple kinds of drinks.

From the website, the recipe is described as: “Inspired by the traditional lemonade and tea combo, the Bacardi Spiced Palmer is the perfect cocktail to sip while you enjoy labor weekend with friends.

I was contacted by a team member at H&S – a brand partnering company that connects with influencers to bring awareness to certain brands. When I got an email to sample Bacardi, I was pumped. A specific recipe I was asked to make was the Bacardi Spiced Palmer. Included in this recipe are Bacardi Spiced (which sells for roughly $13 for the smaller bottle), lemonade, and peach iced tea.

The recipe is simple: 1.5 oz. Bacardi Spiced, 1.5 oz. lemonade, and 1.5 oz. peach iced tea

I tasted it, along with my brother, to see what he thought about the recipe, as well. It was a huge hit for both of us. I can confidently say that this recipe will be a must-have for holidays moving forward. At your average liquor store, there are bottles in two sizes: 750 ml and 1.75 L. The packaging is sleek and is a great addition to any collection you may already have.

Considering the price is so low, there’s really no reason to not try this drink. Adding up all the good factors: low price, great taste, easy to make, etc., I would highly recommend everything about this drink. So, if you’re over 21, find your local liquor store and stock up for the holidays.

Tired of Social Drinking? You Might Be Sober Curious

Perhaps you are wondering why you are forcing yourself to drink during parties just to get along with others. Or maybe you are starting to question your reasons for drinking after seeing a friend in recovery and offering words of encouragement for sobriety. If such thoughts have filled your mind and you can no longer ignore the effects of alcohol on your health, it is probably time to consider adopting a sober curious lifestyle.

The term “sober curious” was coined by Ruby Warrington, author of Sober Curious: The Blissful Sleep, Greater Focus, Limitless Presence, and Deep Connection Awaiting Us All on the Other Side of Alcohol. It essentially means you are choosing to avoid alcohol or changing your drinking habits for your physical or mental health. Instead of drinking mindlessly because everyone else is doing so, you question the drinking culture and the reasons behind your drinking habits. You also become more conscious of the impacts of alcohol in your life.

It is worth noting that sober curious individuals are different from those who live a life of sobriety due to alcohol use disorder. People in recovery have no other choice but to give up drinking permanently. On the other hand, the sober curious culture merely encourages a sober lifestyle. Those who are not willing, ready, or planning on quitting alcohol for good are still welcome.

Why Should You Try Being Sober Curious?

Alcohol may be legal for adults and generally regarded as safe, but it is actually a potent substance. Frequent or excessive drinking can result in numerous unpleasant and detrimental effects, from nasty hangovers and trouble sleeping to feelings of anxiety and increased risk for liver disease and other severe medical conditions. Your occasional drink can also lead to alcohol use disorder, making you unable to control your drinking habits. These are just some of the negative health consequences of drinking that you can avoid if you try a sober curious lifestyle.

Besides improving your general health, choosing sobriety and drinking mindfully also offers immediate physical and psychological benefits. Here are some of them:

▪ Longer and deeper sleep
▪ Increased energy
▪ Better weight management
▪ Healthier and better complexion
▪ Improved mental clarity, focus, and memory
▪ Emotional stability
▪ Better mood
▪ Boost in self-confidence

How Can You Succeed in Your Sober Curious Journey?

Without a doubt, staying away from alcohol is good for your health and overall well-being. But the decision to cut back or take an indefinite break could be challenging. To help you succeed in your sober curious journey, consider the following tips:

Know Your Whys

The first step to ensuring a sober lifestyle is being clear about the reasons why you are abstaining. Perhaps you are tired of waking up with a hangover or feeling terrible when you are at work after a night of drinking. Be specific about the reasons and the changes you want to see by modifying your drinking habits. It will help if you write them down in your journal so you can readily read them when you feel tempted to take a drink.

Make a Plan

If you usually spend your time drinking with friends, you need to create a plan on how you can avoid alcohol in such situations. Think about what you are going to say when you turn down a drink because your friends will probably be curious to know why. Keep it brief. A simple, “I’m not drinking at the moment for my health,” will suffice. Be confident with your decision and never apologize for not drinking.

Also, think about your alcohol substitutions. Fortunately, there are plenty of non-alcoholic options available today, so finding your new favorite drink will be easy. Opt for something more grown-up than a glass of soda. By planning how you will approach social settings that involve drinking, it will be easier for you to enjoy while sticking to your goal.

Explore New Hobbies

One of the most effective ways to abstain from drinking is by trying different activities that do not involve alcohol. If you usually unwind by getting a drink or two after work, consider inviting your friends to watch a play or go bowling. You can also enroll in a fitness class or try exercise videos online. Working out will not only keep your mind off drinking, but it will also boost your mood, help you lose weight, and make your body stronger and healthier. Below are other activities you can try to keep you busy, entertained, and happy even without alcohol:

▪ Learn painting, poetry, or other forms of art.
▪ Read a book.
▪ Start a journal or blog.
▪ Listen to music or learn how to play a musical instrument.
▪ Host a movie night.
▪ Try camping or hiking.
▪ Take cooking classes.

Tell Your Friends

Rather than avoiding your friends most of the time, be honest and share your decision to become sober curious. Who knows? Perhaps your journey can inspire them to examine their drinking habits and prioritize their health as well. Your friends can also offer encouragement and support, which you will surely need in the long run.

Whether you are merely trying the lifestyle for a few months or feel committed to achieving total abstinence, sober curiosity has considerable merits. It can help you become more mindful of your drinking habits and their consequences on your overall health. Moreover, avoiding alcohol, even temporarily, provides observable benefits to your mind and body. See what happens if you stop drinking for a while. Chances are you will bid goodbye to social drinking permanently.

Dancing With the Devil – Inside Demi Lovato’s Life

Demi Lovato, pop singer and actress superstar, has been open about her mental health and addiction struggles. She recently put out a documentary on her life, Dancing With the Devil. The first two episodes aired on YouTube on March 23th. And two more episodes will air on March 30th and April 6th. In this documentary, Demi, her friends, family, and crew discuss her most recent, near-fatal overdose in 2018.

The documentary covers everything from family issues to eating disorders to being in the spotlight from such an early age and hits the hard, raw points of addiction.

From someone who is coming up on five years of sobriety, this documentary was extremely hard to digest. I was in tears within the first five minutes because I wasn’t expecting such detail about Demi’s overdose. Although there is a disclaimer before the documentary, the cast goes on to explicitly describe the situations.

That, in itself, is enough to hit someone hard – let alone someone who has a history of drug abuse.

Drug addiction is one of the most dangerous epidemics. The number of people who battle addiction and alcoholism is through the roof, and much more than we think. We have seen the demise of so many Hollywood stars – and some don’t end the way that Demi’s did.

Addiction and alcoholism have taken icons over the years. Prince, Michael Jackson, Heath Ledger, Amy Winehouse, Mac Miller, to name a few.

In her documentary, Demi talks about being sexually assaulted by her drug dealer, emancipating from her addict and alcoholic father, the on and off eating disorder she battled for a good part of her life, how she was able to hide her addiction from those close to her, her mental illness struggles… All of the conversations we should be having but aren’t.

The stigma around mental illness and addiction is still in place, which is partly why it has taken so many good people.

In this documentary doctors and family talk about the health problems that happened due to Demi’s overdose – specifically how she had three strokes and a heart attack, along with a tube that was sewed into her neck that filtered her blood. When she first woke up, she was legally blind and still has blind spots. It really is a miracle that she is alive today, and the doctors said that if she didn’t get care for another 5-10 minutes, she would have died.

Demi really was given a second chance at life, which is something not a lot of people are able to say.

If you haven’t watched Demi’s documentary, it is available for free to view on YouTube. We are able to see that even though she is loved by fans and is a role model for young women, she still has her faults, flaws, and downfalls.

If you or anyone you know is struggling with addiction, please call the SAMHSA hotline at 1-800-662-4357 or look for a program meeting near you.

17 of the Coolest and Most Exclusive Speakeasies in the U.S.

Since we’re back in the roaring 20s, it’s time to take a trip to some of the most exclusive speakeasies in the nation. Back in the day, speakeasies were places that served alcohol illegally during the prohibition. However, now that alcohol is legal, some speakeasies are still open, maintaining that thrill and anonymity. Some need special passwords, some are hidden behind trick doors and mirrors, and others have you leave all electronics at the door. Here are some of the coolest and most exclusive speakeasies you can visit.

Red Phone Booth – Nashville, TN

The Red Phone Booth is one of the most exclusive speakeasies in Nashville. You’re only allowed in if you have the secret password, which you have to find from either a member of the club or someone else who’s been. In this case, it’s all about who you know.

The Green Mill – Chicago, IL

Previously frequented by Al Capone, this speakeasy features jazz music and hard drinks. There’s even a booth Capone sat at regularly that you can sit at, as well.

Midnight Cowboy – Austin, TX

This speakeasy still features signs from when it was in existence way back when. In order to enter, you need to ring a buzzer that will signal the door to open.

Truth & Alibi – Dallas, TX

Made to look like a candy shop from the outside, this speakeasy is all crystal and velvet on the inside. The weekly password is posted on Facebook and be sure to opt for a Moscow Mule when you make it in.

Williams & Graham – Denver, CO

This entrance to this speakeasy is hidden behind a secret door disguised as a bookcase. If that isn’t cool enough, the drink menu is disguised as a novel.

The Oakland – Detroit, MI

This speakeasy is said to be one of five bars that led to the comeback of whiskey in Detroit and has a strict no cell phone policy. Admittance is also first-come, first-serve.

Commonwealth (The Laundry Room) – Las Vegas, NV

This place is considered a “bar within a bar” and has a strict no photography rule. Reservations are only made via text.

International Exports Ltd. (“The Safe House”) – Milwaukee, WI

This bar is espionage-themed and includes a secret phone booth, secret passageways, and weaponry.

The Patterson House – Nashville, TN

At this speakeasy, bartenders are dressed up like Al Capone and the bar is named after former Tennessee Governor Malcolm R. Patterson who vetoed the return of the prohibition in 1902 in the state.

Noble Experiment – San Diego, CA

This speakeasy’s entrance is sneakily hidden by a stack of silver kegs and admittance is only by text reservation days in advance. The inside features white booths, Rembrandt-style paintings, and a wall of skulls.

Wilson & Wilson Private Detective Agency – San Fransico, CA

As a speakeasy inside a speakeasy, both places need a password to enter and feature 1920s-themed everything.

Apotheke – New York City, NY

This speakeasy is inspired by an old-fashion pharmacy and serves drinks in antique medicine bottles. The door is located down a side street in China Town and is labeled “Chemist.”

Tavern Law (Needle and Thread) – Seattle, WA

Featured as one of the top 25 Best Cocktail Bars in America by GQ in 2010, this speakeasy is a secret lounge inside another building. Access to the space is only available via picking up a phone in the back of the building and dialing the lounge’s number.

Harold Black – Washington D.C.

This speakeasy has a sliding wooden door that leads to a staircase that empties out into the bar. This place doesn’t have a website and reservations are strongly recommended.

PDT (Please Don’t Tell) – New York City, NY

Hidden behind a phone booth at a hot dog stand in the East Village, this speakeasy is only accessible after dialing “1” in the phone booth.

Melinda’s Alley, Pheonix, AZ

Like classic speakeasies in the 1920s, this bar is only marked with a single red light and features more red lighting on the inside.

Whether you’re a fan of the roaring 20s or are just looking to have some sneaky fun, try out these speakeasies to get the full experience. Grab your S.O., a few friends, or go to mingle with others and be sure to dress in character.

What Your Alcoholic Beverage Of Choice Says About You

Every time you head out to the bar with your friends and order a drink, you’re making a decision not only about the type of beverage you’d like to drink but about the type of person you really are. We all value different tastes, effects, and eventual outcomes when we imbibe, and the alcohol you prefer is essentially a metaphorical representation of your personality.

We all love our alcoholic agency, and making the decision to drink is second only to deciding what to drink. Our forefathers fought for our right to choose, and what better way to honor their sacrifice than to get drunk on freedom? That’s clearly what America is really about.

Red Wine

You’re a little snobbish, or you have an ethnically influenced investment in drinking wine with every meal. You probably haven’t actually gotten drunk off your beverage of choice in several decades.

Mainstream Beer

You’re a broke college student, a middle-aged man, or a high school student trying beer for the first time.

Scotch

You’re incredibly suave, and miles above the rest of us in class, taste, and tolerance. But unlike whiskey drinkers, you probably aren’t aware of how cool you really are.

Gin

You enjoy Gatsby-themed costume parties and the subtle taste of Christmas trees. Oh, and you consider yourself a higher class of human than all those vodka-loving lightweights who can’t handle a real martini.

Craft/Microbrewed Beer

You like the way the frothy carbonation collects in your ironic mustache, or you’re on a beer-tolerant health kick. Tons of brand-name beers actually contain high fructose corn syrup, but most craft breweries leave this out. You are well of this important distinction.

Champagne

You’re super fancy, or you’re just a huge fan of bubbles (like that fish from Finding Nemo).

Tequila

You’re trying to put as much distance between your sober self and drunken self as humanly possible. Seriously, why does tequila always equal a personality transplant? Absolutely no one makes good decisions drunk on tequila.

Vodka

You’ve deluded yourself into believing that vodka is a calorie-free alternative to beer (it isn’t).

White Wine

If you’re pairing it with your dinner, then you’re probably either super classy or at a wine tasting festival. If you’re enjoying it with ice cubes and a box of tissues, then you’re a middle-aged suburban mom watching a romantic comedy.

Rum

You value freedom, anarchy, and a healthy tolerance for coconut-flavored drinks. Or you’re in denial that the summer doesn’t actually last all year. Alternatively, you’re on a resort vacation somewhere in the tropics and there are no Rum-free options available.

Whiskey

If it isn’t St. Patrick’s Day, well…you’re just that hardcore.

Sugary Cocktails

You’re out for your 21st birthday enjoying your fishbowl, or you’re too scared to try hard liquor without something sweet to mask the taste.

Malt Liquor

…in a brown paper bag. I think this one speaks for itself.

Absinthe

You’re a big Ernest Hemingway fan, but unfortunately, big game hunting isn’t really an option and you aren’t much of a writer. To honor your favorite author, you’ve decided to imbibe a gentlemanly beverage, and no, you won’t be batting an eyelash when they inevitably pump your stomach. Grace under pressure, after all.
