10 great crime movies to watch right now

The film industry is gradually but surely getting back on its feet after nearly two years of halted productions, delayed releases, and scrapped projects. A variety of new crime films are set to be released in the year ahead, from sequels to literary adaptations to high budget hits to low-key surprises.

In our search for new crime movies, we found a few that we believe are worth keeping an eye on.

Before we start, do you have a reliable TV provider that offers your favorite channels? If not, you need to get one today. Do your research and see which providers are available in your area. If you are worried about blowing out your budget, do not be because there are many amazing yet affordable providers out there. For instance, Spectrum TV is a great option if you are on a budget and cannot compromise on the content. You also have the option to bundle your cable with your phone and internet to save a fortune.

Now, let us begin with the movie list.

1. Ambulance

A modest thriller on Netflix starring Jake Gyllenhaal, The Guilty, came out in 21. The film was a re-creation of a similar (but better) Danish film. This time, the Donnie Darko actor stars in a less diffident and self-possessed remake of another Danish flick, Ambulance, in 2022. Do we know what level of modesty and restraint will be present in this heist thriller? Well, the movie is directed by Michael ‘Crash Bang Wallop’ Bay, who also directed Armageddon.

2. Knives Out 2

Back in 2019, the tongue-in-cheek mystery Knives Out shocked both audiences and critics. Immediately after its release in 2019, a sequel was announced. With another ensemble cast, Daniel Craig proceeds as Benoit Blanc, the idiosyncratic investigator.

Ethan Hawke, Kate Hudson, Kate Bautista, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr, Janelle Monáe, Edward Norton, and Dave Bautista join the lineup this time. Netflix paid $469m for this film and the next sequel, with Craig on the hook for $100m for each of the two films – so expect Netflix to make a big push when the film’s release date approaches.

3. Death on the Nile

The second appearance of Kenneth Branagh as Belgian detective Hercule Poirot has been in the works for two years, but finally is released in February. Murder on the Orient Express from 2017 was not particularly exceptional, but it was cute enough and a great way to spend two hours. Poirot’s follow-up finds him aboard the SS Karnak where – you would never guess it – someone has been murdered. Gal Gadot, Armie Hammer, Annette Bening, Dawn French, Jennifer Saunders, and Russell Brand are among the main suspects.

4. The Gray Man

As part of their massive spending spree, Netflix approved a £200m check for Avengers: End Game directors Joseph and Anthony Russo to make an action thriller, crime/crime thriller, starring some A-listers. CIA operative Ryan Gosling has been deceived by the Agency and is forced to go rogue. Chris Evans, an old colleague and friend, is tasked with tracking him down and taking him out. Ascent to superstardom continues for Ana de Armas in a supporting role.

5. Killers of the Flower Moon

The latest prestige project from Martin Scorsese features Leonardo DiCaprio as well as Robert De Niro. They have collaborated frequently to make a western crime epic that explores the 1920s cover-up surrounding the serial murder of multiple members of the oil-rich Oklahoma-based Osage Nation. This is a non-fiction adaptation of David Grann’s book with the same title.

6. Bullet Train

Based on the book by K*tar* Isaka, this crime to remember story stars Brad Pitt, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Zazie Beetz, Brian Tyree Henry, Bad Bunny, Michael Shannon, Logan Lerman, and Sandra Bullock, among others. On a high-speed train, a group of highly advanced assassins are trying to kill each other and stay alive. The film will be released this summer.

7. Havoc

Netflix looks like it is going to have a great year with yet another major crime/action movie due out in 2022, Gareth Evans’ Havoc. We have high hopes for the action scenes in The Raid, as the film’s Welsh director specializes in set pieces.

It’s Tom Hardy who plays the no-nonsense detective who is on the trail of some very bad men to save the son of a politician. Aside from Whitaker and Olyphant, the cast includes Justin Cornwell, Jessie Mei Li, and Luis Guzmán.

8. See How They Run

With Saoirse Ronan, Ruth Wilson, David Oyelowo, Adrien Brody, Shirley Henderson, Sam Rockwell, and Reece Shearsmith starring, this throwback piece will open in picture houses across the world in 2022.

Taking place in the 1950s West End of London, the setting is enormously evocative. Rockwell and Ronan’s ‘Old Bill’ characters are thrown into a baffling murder mystery in Theatreland. There will be a bumper crop of funny throwback murder mysteries this year, with Knives Out 2 and this.

9. Wash Me in the River

The film stars Robert De Niro, Jack Huston, and John Malkovich, and probably will not be a big release, but it could be a lot of fun. In a fairly straightforward retaliation film, Huston plays an ex-Oxy addict who vows revenge (with a nail gun) on the drug dealers who sold him the drugs that killed his fiancée. We guess that De Niro is the compassionate sheriff on his trail. The US rapper and trap star Quavo plays the head of a drug cartel who may or may not end up with a nail in his skull.

10. Deep Water

Ben Affleck is worried about losing their marriage, so he ignores – and even encourages – the infidelity of his wife. He becomes the prime suspect (understandably) when the men she sees start dying mysteriously. Affleck’s wife Ana de Armas also stars in Deep Water, an adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s 1957 novel of the same name.

Final Words

The Resurgence of Old School TV – Proof That Today’s Shows Kinda Suck

Much in the way a favorite dish, a whiff of perfume, or a certain Christmas decoration can take us back in time, old school TV has the very same power.  When I say “old school?? I mean shows like The Red Green Show which I am now able to watch on Roku.

We are talking about shows that were aired at the advent of sitcom television.  The Andy Griffith Show and  The JeffersonsHappy DaysLaverne and ShirleyF-TroopThe Mary Tyler Moore Show…you know, the oldies and goodies.  My Three Sons, Sanford and Son, The Love Boat. I could go on and on.  Even the first bars of the theme song is enough to make us smile.  Sometimes, when I watch a re-run of a much- beloved show I can almost smell the Johnson’s Baby Shampoo from the bath that had transpired right before watching.  It’s a sense memory in every part of the word and it makes people feel happy.

Each generation hearkens back to a simpler time and thinks “Those were the good old days.??  Each generation is correct because, to them, it was before true responsibilities such as job stress, in-laws, etc. existed in our lives.  We could just sit and watch our shows and be in another world.

The resurgence of the popularity of these shows stems from a few things.  Our ability to have On-Demand television viewing, the Internet, DVD collections of television seasons, and even the DVR allow us to pick and choose what we would like to watch. More cable channels that feature classic shows are popping up including TV Land, MeTV and AntennaTV, and finding a loyal audience.  Even TV Land, which has ventured more recently into producing new shows, such as Hot in Cleveland, has been careful to base those shows not only around old- school actors but on a revolving door of guest stars that bring along a sense of nostalgia with them.

It’s funny that it’s old-school shows that are making the resurgence because no one would ever want to view them on the old-school televisions.  Remember when you had to get off the couch to change the channel?  TV remotes didn’t exist.  Afternoon cartoons were unheard of until cable television came into each home one by one.  Afternoon shows were soap operas.  I can still hear the announcer saying, “Like sand in the hourglass, these are the days of our lives.??  My mother would be folding clothes and I would be eating my lunch while the little ones napped.  It’s a snapshot of history that I thought couldn’t be repeated.  I was wrong.

Seeing all of these old shows on television is like running into a dear childhood friend out of the blue.  You can’t help but smile and your heart is bursting up out of your eyes with that happy tear that pulls through your nose. It’s good for the soul.  Physiologically, our bodies respond to these memories in a positive way.  It lets us relax our brains and we can trick ourselves into another place and time.

To watch the shows today, I am amused at how silly some of the plots were. The Brady Bunch still has a cult following, though.  If I said, “Mom always said, don’t play ball in the house,?? you’d know the episode immediately. You’ve seen it yourself and this is another reason why we’re seeing these shows grow in popularity. Thankfully we can stream them.

Back in “old school?? TV time, if you didn’t stay home and watch a show, you missed it.  We would call our friends and tell them that “The Grinch?? or “It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown?? was airing that night.  It was a warm fuzzy feeling to know all your friends and classmates were watching the show as well.  The next day in school it was something that would link us together as discussed with great passion important issues such as why was there never an adult watching those Peanuts?  It was the stuff that formed life long friendships.

Old School Television represents home.  When these shows were popular, mothers didn’t work like they do today.  Kids would get off the school bus and mom would be home, making dinner, with  The Mike Douglas Show on a black and white television in the corner of the kitchen.  It was cozy.  We want that again.

G’night John Boy!
