Wig Care 101: How to Wash, Style, and Maintain Your Wigs

Wigs offer versatility, style, and, sometimes, a renewed sense of confidence. However, the longevity and appearance of a wig largely depend on how it’s cared for. Proper wig maintenance not only ensures it looks its best but also extends its lifespan. This comprehensive guide will delve into the essentials of wig care, providing insights into washing, styling, and overall maintenance to keep wigs in top-notch condition.

1. Understanding Wig Types for Proper Care

Before delving into the specifics of wig care, it’s crucial to understand the different wig types available in the market. Purchasing luxury wigs online offers a diverse range of options, from synthetic to natural hair wigs. Each type requires a unique care regimen to maintain its appearance and longevity. For instance, while synthetic wigs might not need frequent washing, natural hair wigs benefit from regular conditioning to retain their luster. Gaining a clear understanding of your wig type ensures that you apply the most suitable maintenance techniques, guaranteeing that your wig remains in pristine condition for longer.

2. Washing Your Wig: Step-by-step Guide

Frequent washing can decrease the lifespan of wigs. Therefore, it’s recommended to wash wigs after approximately every 10 years for synthetic ones and slightly more often for human hair wigs. Here’s a simple guideline:

● Preparation: Detangle the wig using a wide-tooth comb, starting from the tips and working upwards.
● Washing: Submerge the wig in lukewarm water mixed with a mild, wig-friendly shampoo. Gently agitate and allow it to soak for a few minutes. Rinse thoroughly with cool water.
● Conditioning: Apply a wig conditioner, avoiding the cap. This restores the wig’s natural sheen. For synthetic wigs, use a specially designed wig conditioner. Rinse thoroughly.
● Drying: Gently pat the wig with a towel to remove excess water. Allow it to air dry on a wig stand away from direct sunlight or heat.

3. Styling Your Wig without Damage

Styling wigs requires specific tools and techniques to prevent damage:

● Heat: Avoid using high heat on synthetic wigs as it can melt or distort the fibers. Human hair wigs can tolerate heat but use heat protectant sprays to guard against potential damage.
● Tools: Opt for wide-tooth combs and gentle brushes. Avoid pulling or tugging at the wig.
● Products: Use wig-approved styling products. Heavy, oil-based products can cause buildup and diminish the wig’s natural appearance.

4. Safe Storage for Wig Longevity

How a wig is stored significantly impacts its longevity:

● Wig Stands: Always store wigs on wig stands. This helps maintain the wig’s shape and reduces tangling.
● Environment: Store wigs in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Prolonged exposure to sunlight can fade the wig’s color.
● Travel: When traveling, transport wigs in a wig box or a silk bag to protect them.

5. Combating Tangling and Shedding

Tangling and shedding are common wig concerns, but with the right measures, these can be minimized:

● Regular Detangling: Regularly comb wigs with appropriate tools to prevent and remedy tangles.
● Avoid Friction: Wear scarves or soft collars to reduce friction at the nape. This is especially relevant for longer wigs that might rub against clothing.
● Handling with Care: When washing or styling, handle the wig gently. Avoid unnecessary pulling or tugging.

6. Reviving and Refreshing Older Wigs

Over time, even well-maintained wigs can lose their luster. Here’s how to revive them:

● Steam Treatment: For synthetic wigs, using a handheld steamer can help smooth out frizz and restore the original style.
● Deep Conditioning: Deep conditioning helps revitalize human hair wigs. Deep conditioners moisturize and nurture these wigs like real hair. Applying a good deep conditioner regularly can prevent dryness, eliminate tangling, and keep the wig smooth and lustrous.
● Trimming: Occasional trimming by a professional can give a wig a fresh look, especially if the ends become damaged.

7. Protecting Your Wig from External Factors

External elements can adversely affect wigs. Here are protection measures:

● Avoid Direct Heat and Sunlight: Prolonged exposure can damage the wig fibers and fade color. Wear hats or scarves if necessary.
● Stay Away from Chlorine and Saltwater: If swimming, consider wearing a swim cap or thoroughly rinsing the wig afterward.
● Limit Contact with Colorful Fabrics: Some dyes in clothing, especially when wet, might transfer onto light-colored wigs.

Conclusion

Ensuring a wig retains its allure and longevity hinges on proper care and maintenance. By understanding the nuances of washing, styling, and storage, wig wearers can enjoy their investment for extended periods. Regular detangling, protecting against external factors, and periodic professional servicing further enhance the wig’s lifespan. With the right steps and attention to detail, wigs can remain an integral, beautiful part of one’s styling repertoire, continually offering the gift of transformation and style.

Can you add extensions at home?

There are several different types of hair extensions that you can use. We all have been there when we cut our hair short and then regret the decision later. So, instead of waiting for the long hair to grow back, you can use hair extensions to enhance your look.

In addition to that, the greatest advantage of using hair extensions is that you can choose between both permanent or temporary hair extensions, depending on your demand.

Whether it is about going to a party or it is about dealing with hair issues, such as less volume, short length, or less hair growth, you can undoubtedly use hair extensions for all of these problems.

You can also learn more about hair extension types to know which one would suit the best to your needs and demands. Here are some of the hair extensions that you quickly add at home:

Clip-In Hair Extensions

Clip-in hair extensions are basically temporary hair extensions that you can easily wear even at home without getting into much hassle.

All you need to do is just have a little bit of practice, and these clip-in hair extensions can become your go-to option, as they are fast and easy to use. When you want to wear them, you just have to snap the clips attached to the extensions open and then close them in the roots of your hair.

In addition to that, you can take these extensions off whenever you would like to and vice versa. With these hair extensions, you can go from short hair to long hair in less than just 10 minutes.

Tape-In Hair Extensions

Tape-in hair extensions are also temporary hair extensions that you can easily wear as well as take off whenever you would like. This type of hair extension is generally suitable for those who have thin or fine hair and want to add some volume to their natural hair.

Since tape-in hair extensions are small in size, this makes them quite unnoticeable when you are wearing them. This means that if you have fine or thin hair, you would not have to worry about hiding your hair extensions with tape-in ones.

Tape-in hair extensions can be applied with the help of a specific adhesive to your hair and can last up to 4-8 weeks.

Wigs or Hair Pieces

Hairpieces of wigs are also some of the most common types of hair extensions that can be easily applied at home. They are also temporary hair extensions and can instantly give your hair a new style.

Most of the time, these wigs or hairpieces are used when you want to attend a particular event and want to attain a hairstyle. This can be either a ponytail, a fringe, a curl style wig, or many more. It also helps you to add volume to your hair.

All you need to do is match the color and shade of the hair extensions with your natural hair to make them unnoticeable. This way, you can instantly go from short hair to long hair or to any other hairstyle.

4 Tips For Promoting Faster Hair Growth

Have you recently chopped off your hair and now you are not sure about the style and would love to have your longer strands back? It happens to everyone. We all love to experiment at some point, until we start hating it, after taking a look at what we have actually done to our perfectly good, long hair. Yet, experimenting is a part of our nature and I have absolutely nothing against it. After all, you might stumble upon the look you very much like and even if not, the simple truth is that you can just let your hair grow back.

This, however, takes time. Some people even argue that they were never actually able to get back to their usual style after cutting their strands, because those just refused to grow the right amount. While that can definitely happen, there are reasons for it, just like there are methods you can use, such as those found on this page, to promote hair growth. Usually, the fact that it won’t grow is an indicator that it isn’t healthy, but that’s not what we are here to talk about right now.

Instead of talking about those situations in which your strands won’t actually grow, let us take a different approach and give you a few tips on what you should do in order to promote faster hair growth. You will find those tips below and I am quite sure that they will turn out to be rather useful, especially if you have only recently chopped off those strands and now you want them back. Of course, you cannot expect a miracle, since it definitely won’t grow over night, but the point is that there are ways to speed up the process.

1. Trim It Regularly

Probably the biggest mistake that people make when trying to grow their hair is the fact that they start thinking they should never cut it again, until they have achieved the desired length. This, however, couldn’t be further from the truth. In fact, if you don’t trim the ends and cut off split ones on a regular basis, that can end up being one of the reasons why you might feel that your hair isn’t growing in the first place.

This is because you will keep unhealthy strands on your head, which will lead to breakage and return you to a shorter look once again. Now, don’t get me wrong here. I am not trying to confirm the myth that hair grows faster once you cut it, because that’s not exactly true. It actually has the same growth rate regardless of whether you trim it or not, but the fact that you have split ends that lead to breakage make it appear as if it weren’t growing at all. So, do yourself a favor and trim regularly.

Here are some more tips you could use: https://www.wikihow.com/Encourage-Hair-Growth

2. Don’t Over-wash It

I know that you want your curls to be clean every single day and that you want to look amazing, but here’s the thing. If you wash your hair every day, the shampoo that you’ll be using will actually strip your scalp off certain natural oils that your strands need in order to be healthy. This is why I don’t recommend washing it more often than every second, or even third if you can make it, day. And, of course, make sure to use a conditioner in the process, since it will hydrate your scalp, as well as encourage new growth.

3. Care For Your Scalp

Since I have mentioned scalp already, there is one rather significant thing that you need to understand. The health of this part of your head definitely influences the overall health of your hair, as well as is growth. So, in short, this means that you will need to care for your scalp if you want to make sure that your strands will grow once again. By ensuring you have a healthy scalp, you are also ensuring that blood and nutrients flow to the follicle the way they actually should. Now, the only thing is, you might not be sure how to care for your scalp precisely.

First things first, you might want to develop a weekly scalp mask routine. These masks are usually oil-based or cream-based and they can be made out of various ingredients, such as peppermint and similar. They are created specifically to improve circulation and thus ensure your scalp’s health. In addition to masks, you should also think about massaging your scalp on a regular basis, since that can be of great help as well.

4. Use Regrowth Products

In case you have tried all of the tricks mentioned above, and possibly a few more, and realized that they aren’t quite working, that can only mean one thing. You need a more aggressive approach. Don’t get worried about the word “aggressive”, since the method I am going to suggest right now is still gentle on your scalp and your strands. It’s just that it is specifically created to promote growth. Basically, you might want to try a hair growth system or two, i.e. products made to help you achieve this particular goal.

If you have heard about these products already, then you also must have heard various stories about them. Some people believe that they work perfectly, while others are not so convinced. Let me tell you the truth. In simple words, if you find the right products and if you are persistent in using them, they will most certainly work. On the other hand, if you get some poor quality products, they are definitely not going to help you.

This simply means that you will have to be rather careful about the products that you are actually using in this process. The best thing to do is thoroughly research more of them and find the one that people were happy with. So, read product reviews and talk to other people about these, with the aim of finding the best possible solution for you.

Lucky Heart Cosmetics – The Memphis-Based Brand You Need to Shop

Being from Nashville, TN, featuring and reviewing companies that are based near me helps bring exposure to the smaller cosmetics companies that need business. Ulta, Sephora, and other places are great, but nothing can beat the familiar feel of using products from a company that knows you on a more personal level.

Lucky Heart Cosmetics is a Memphis, Tennessee-based company that has been in business since 1935. Initially started as a cosmetics company for African Americans, the brand has branched out to include all ethnicities. All of their products are made in the United States and are proudly cruelty-free. Lucky Heart Cosmetics is currently veteran-owned and sells hair care and skincare products. The company sent me both the 4-Way Coconut Conditioner and Absolutely Lavender Hand & Body Lotion to review, and I was able to dive into what the brand has to offer.

4-Way Coconut Oil Conditioner

As advertised on the website, this product… “Coconut oil detangles your hair, helping it grow longer and stronger while vitamin E nourishes your scalp so your hair stays healthy. Use as a conditioner or a deep-cleaning mask to reveal soft and manageable hair.” Directions on the packaging instruct to use on damp hair and leave it in as you style it as usual.

The product is like a textured petroleum jelly-like feel that smells strongly of coconut. Let me emphasize: you only need a little bit. Just a pea-sized amount will go a long way. It’s important to remember that you should not apply this near your roots, as it will make your hair greasy. Instead, work the product into the ends of your hair and brush it through before styling.

One out of the two times I used the product, it made my hair very greasy, but that was because it was challenging to find the sweet spot on how much to use. But, if applied correctly, this product has the potential to bring coconutty health back into your hair.

Absolutely Lavender Hand & Body Lotion

Let me be the first to say… I have tried many, many lotions that are said to help sleep. Between Lush’s Sleepy lotion, lotions with rose, lotions with actual melatonin in it, and many more, I can say that I have finally found my holy grail – and it’s only $5.

From someone with wicked insomnia, I know how hard it can be to get a good night’s sleep – even with melatonin or another sleep aid that you may use. And, before I started trying sleepytime lotions, I had come to terms with the fact that I would forever spend my nights waiting for hours to fall asleep, just to wake up 10 times in the middle of the night before my alarm blared in my face the next morning. However, NO LONGER.

I tried this lotion for six days straight to see if I had finally found something that could help my sleep. Even from the first night, this lotion had me falling asleep in as little as eight minutes. You can’t even get through half of a podcast in that amount of time. Every night I was pleasantly surprised to find that I fell asleep quickly and stayed asleep throughout the night.

For my nightly routine, I use the lotion to moisturize my legs and my feet before massaging some lotion into my hands (since I usually sleep with my hands near my face). You can put a little bit under your nose or on your chest if that would be a better option for you and your sleep routine.

The Takeaway

Locally-owned companies will always have a special place in my heart. Maybe it’s because I owned my own business back in the day or maybe it’s because the personal feel you get with the brand is just unmatched. That being said, Lucky Heart Cosmetics has that personalized feel you love with products and prices you’ll love even more. Check them out online to find your new favorite product.

4 Ways to Combat Thinning Hair

If your hair is thinner than you would like it to be, you can do a few things that may help promote more hair growth.

Its possible that thinning hair is the indicator of a medical issue such as a reaction to a medication, thyroid problems, or other hormone changes, so if your hair loss has come on suddenly, then its worth speaking with your doctor about it.

Scalp massage

Scalp massage is a great thing to try because even if it doesnt do the trick, it feels great!

The idea behind getting a scalp massage is that it stimulates the blood flow to your scalp, which in turn promotes hair growth.

If you dont want to fork out for a masseuse, you can give yourself a scalp massage at home by applying pressure to your scalp with your fingertips when you wash your hair. You could even buy a scalp massager if you want to give yourself a sense of luxury.

Hair transplant

Hair transplants are more common than you might think!

The procedure has come a long way since its first inception and can be done under local anesthetic. The doctor will harvest individual hair follicles from the areas of your scalp which are showing good levels of growth and then transplant them in the areas where growth is thinning. This then allows you to have healthy hair growth evenly across your head. Make sure you use a

Anti-thinning shampoos

A good anti-thinning shampoo can help with thinning hair because it helps your hair to appear thicker. They also contain vitamins and amino acids that help promote a healthier scalp, which will help your hair grow. Check out Scissor’s Tech best hair cutting shears in 2021.

Work to reduce your stress levels

A very common cause of thinning hair is stress. When we are stressed, our body releases a hormone called cortisol, which can actually kill off new hair growth.

If you are feeling stressed, its worth taking the time to try and address it because it can also have other negative impacts on you, and its just not a nice way to live your life.

Focusing on proper nutrition and regular exercise are important factors when it comes to managing stress because these things allow your body to function at its best.

Some other ways that you can reduce stress are:

● Meditation. Meditation helps to ground you in the present moment and helps to prevent worry about the future. Its also more and more accessible; there are lots of meditation apps that you can try for free, for example, Headspace and Calm.
● Taking a walk. Walking allows you to have a change of scenery which is really important for your mind, and it also gives you the benefit of gentle exercise.
● Hugs. Hugs from someone you care about cause your body to release oxytocin, which reduces stress and lowers blood pressure.
● Get creative. Creative activities such as drawing and writing help to lower anxiety and promote a greater sense of wellbeing. You dont need to be good at it! In fact, its better if you try not to judge your art on its merits and enjoy the process instead.

Anne Hathaway Just Got The Perfect Summer Haircut

Summer’s going to be here before we know it (we promise). Time for shorts, the beach, swimming pools, and ice cream. And nothing is getting us more excited for warmer weather than Anne Hathaway’s new haircut.

On the off chance that you don’t follow Hathaway’s every hair move, let us just say that she doesn’t tend to mix it up much. She usually keeps it long-long, with the occasional long bob (lob).

But a black and white Instagram posted by Adir Abergel shows Hathaway rocking a super cute wavy shag haircut. It’s the perfect haircut for summer, because the hotter and more humid it gets, the better the haircut looks.

Abergel captioned the photo, “New cut, new vibes” and added that Hathaway is currently promoting her new movie, Hustle.

In another photo of Hathaway, this one color, Abergel explained exactly how to get Hathaway’s piece-y, textured look.

All right, that’s kind of a lot of work, but hey, the result is amazing!

And people expressed in the comments how much they loved Hathaway’s new look.

So what do you think? Are you feeling Anne Hathaway’s new lewk?

35 Women Who Prove Natural Gray Hair Shouldn’t Be Covered Up With Dye

For years, women have spent hundreds of thousands of dollars trying to cover up their natural gray hair. They have long thought that gray hair was associated with being old and washed up, and immediately covered every silver streak with globs of dye to make it disappear. But, today, things are much different. Now, women spend hundreds and thousands of dollars to get gray hair. I’m one of those people and trust me, I’ve spent a lot on shampoos, dyes, hair masks, and just about anything else to get a silver tone to my locks. But, what about the older generation who used to cover their grays?

It turns out, many of them are deciding to embrace their hair, letting that natural, lovely, silver shine on through. And, 26-year-old  Martha Truslow Smith decided to embrace these women via an Instagram page titled: @Grombre. The page has set out to celebrate women who have decided to “go gray” and embrace their natural beauty. When speaking to Bored Panda, Smith said:

“The underlying reason I started Grombre was to start a different dialogue around gray hair on women and find the answer to some earnest questions of my own: “Is it true that my gray hair is ugly, makes me look old, and means I’m no longer good enough? I’m only in my twenties. If that is true, how will I feel and what will I believe about myself when I’m in my 40s, 50s, 60s?” I want to challenge the way we think about what we consider “beautiful,” and why, and propose that we have more important things to spend our precious time, energy and resources on if we find our hearts aren’t aligning with the things we find to be someone else’s biases.”

35 Women Who Ditched Their Razors For No-Shave ‘Januhairy’ Share Progress Pics

A new year brings new trends and resolutions to try. This year, many women are out trying to smash the patriarchy and unrealistic beauty standards and expectations of women all over the world. To do this, some have decided to partake in a no-shave “Januhairy.” The idea came from student Laura Jackson, who said that the idea behind the campaign was to empower women to understand more about themselves and about others. Essentially, the goal is that women grow out their hair all January long without shaving. And, to celebrate how far they have come, women have been sharing their progress pictures so far, in the second week of January.
