How To Have A Sustainably, Spooky Halloween

Spooky season is here. And there are many ways to celebrate the ghoulish season with sustainable flair. Whether you are an eighties rockstar, or a cat or action hero, here are fifteen ways to have eco eek of a Hallows Eve.

1.) Rewear your Halloween costume from a previous year.

Gone are the days of fast fashion. Think sustainably and consider costume swapping with your bestie or pulling something out of your closet and channel your inner creativity. Take an old prom dress or dance team uniform be a Barbie girl and own it, girl, OWN it.

2.) Consign for your costume.

Looking for a Yellowstone costume or Yellowjacket costume for that matter? Recycled fashion finds at vintage, or second-hand clothing stores assures that you won’t overspend on your creative costume while keeping green practices in mind.

3.) Shop for Vegan treats.

Chomp Chocolate and Trupo Treats are top-notch vegan goodies for your Halloween party. Looking for the classics that are vegan? Other candies are accidentally vegan like Swedish fish, red vines, junior mints and more.

4.) Secondhand Halloween party decorations.

Classic plastic pumpkins are easy to find at second-hand stores, along with witches brew bowls. Random fabrics in orange and black and deep purple can be frayed or braided and you can find those old doll heads and hats to decorate your haunted house with. Spooky yet sustained.

5.) Avoid throwaway plastics like glow sticks.

Bring miniature flashlights on your trick-or-treat evening with you instead of glowsticks. Try to avoid buying anything new that you will have to throw away after the evening ends. And if you do need party favors grab those paper cups and paper plates instead of plastic ones. Order pizza and other food items that allow you to eat with your hands to skip the plastic knives and forks.

6.) Use Cruelty-Free Cosmetics

Skip the harsh chemicals in makeup and hair dyes that wind up in our water supply.  Use cruelty free hair dyes and non toxic makeup for your Halloween costume.

7.) Use a reusable cloth bag to trick or treat

Ditch the plastic pumpkin and grab a reusable cloth bag. Get creative using an old pillowcase to avoid shopping for plastic versions at Target.

Conclusion

Being spooky can be sustainable and still a night of thrills and chills. Let’s all work together to keep this planet bootiful. (Sorry had too.)

Five Things You Should Do After Halloween

Halloween is definitely one of the holidays whose roots are buried the deepest in popular culture. As such, it is significant like no other holiday (aside from maybe Christmas and Thanksgiving). Still, whereas the latter two are holidays that you’re supposed to spend in a family dinner, Halloween has always been a bit wilder and more reckless.

Naturally, this means that afterward, you’re left with a bit of a mess, both in your head and in your home. Here are five things you should do to sort it out.

Turning a New Page

Halloween is not the part of the year during which we lead the cleanest, healthier lives. The fall depression often kicks in early October, which makes a lot of people engage in comfort eating, potentially even drinking more than they should. While it is supposed to be a joyous festivity, Halloween is usually the culmination of this slow process.

So, instead of waiting for your next New Year’s resolution, what you need is to turn the page right away. However, before heading to the gym, you might want to deal with the hangover and overall detoxification caused by the previous period. Here are some habits you need to change right away for maximum effect. You need to:

● Start drinking more water (even if it means forcing yourself to do so).
● Cut down on your sugar intake (you’ve had enough already).
● Take a couple of days to rest (from all the partying, possibly even party planning/preparation).
● Eat quality food (whole foods that provide real nourishment, as opposed to fast food).
● Get your metabolism going (you don’t have to run straight away; you can just walk more).

Keep in mind that all of this sounds simple on paper, but in practice, it’s not so easy to pull off. Give yourself time and don’t start too ambitious in order not to get discouraged. The sooner you start, the better.

Plan a Quiet Day

Before you start this major transformation and take actions to deal with all the leftovers from Halloween, you could plan one quiet day at home. Stay in bed the entire day and binge-watch your favorite show. Don’t answer your phone and try your best not to leave the house. You can spend this day listening to your favorite music, playing video games, or enjoying some other indoor hobby of your own choosing.

Keep in mind that both during the preparation stage and during the party, you probably spent a lot of time with more people than you’re accustomed to. Therefore, your social energy might be depleted. Doing something opposite might help recharge it a lot sooner.

Sure, you may not want to be alone the whole day. After a massive party, there’s nothing wrong with inviting a couple of your closest friends and looking for some brunch party ideas. This is a perfect compromise between socializing and doing something quite the opposite to the previous wild party.

Clean Your Home

After a successful Halloween, you are inevitably left with the scariest part: a mess to clean. It is still a tedious chore, whether it’s a mess left by the tricksters or the aftermath of your own party. But there is no need to get spooked out as there are a lot of tips that can make it at least a bit less painful. So, after you’re well-rested, you should probably get to it as it will be a lot easier to clean while the pumpkin stains are fresh.

First, you’ll want to deal with the trick part of the trick or treat. Removing the residue toilet paper, and you want to do this before it rains, can be done by wrapping the end of a stick in duct tape. If there was egging involved, pick up the eggshells and hose the place down.

Now there is the treat part. Candy can leave sticky stains on walls and furniture. Instead of scrubbing it, you should soak a rag in hot water and press it to the stain. Humidity and heat are supposed to loosen it, so you can just wipe it afterward.

In the end, you are left with the mess in your own house. Vacuum glitter, confetti, and feathers left from the costumes remove pumpkin stains with dish soap, use rubbing alcohol to clean fake blood, and you’re all set to start thinking about fall decorations for Thanksgiving.

Decide What to Do with Your Costume

While a Halloween costume is an incredibly important part of the tradition, it does have one major flaw – you’re unlikely to wear it again (at least anytime soon). Even if you and your friends organize a masquerade every year, you can’t just appear wearing the same costume time and time again. So, what are you going to do with the costume? There are several options.

● First, you can sell it on eBay. Especially if it’s a costume you’ve made, the chances are that it’s completely unique and will attract a lot of attention. This way, you solve the issue and buff your budget a bit. After Halloween, you might need this.
● You can start a family costume closet. Here, you will keep all the costumes you and your family have worn over the years and turn it into yet another tradition.
● One more thing you could do here is try to merge two costumes into one. There are often elements of a costume that could, if repurposed, become something else entirely. This will help you be ready for next year’s Halloween costume.
● Donating them to charity is always an option. This way, you get to do something humane just as the holiday season is about to arrive.
● If you’ve never attended a Comic-Con, now might be the time to consider it. After all, you have a great way of blending in.

One last thing worth mentioning is that these costumes are also great for cosplay, prank video calls, and similar other events. Moreover, costume swapping is a thing worth considering—all in all, plenty of options.

Reuse Pumpkins

A lot of people carve pumpkins prior to Halloween as a decoration. Now, while fresh pumpkins are a delicious treat and a universal ingredient, the last thing you want is to eat a pumpkin that has been sitting outside for God knows how long. So, what do you do with them?

The first thing you want is to save the pumpkin seeds. When roasted properly, these can turn into a proper treat. All you need to do is sprinkle them with salt, add a bit of olive oil (or butter), and there you have it. Instead of turning them into a snack, you could also use them to make pumpkin seed pesto or topper for guacamole, etc.

pumpkin stock is another fantastic idea. Why? Well, mostly because you can freeze it and keep it somewhere safe so that you can reuse it in one of your post-Halloween recipes.

Just because you can’t eat the pumpkin after it’s been outside for a while, this doesn’t mean that the local critters will be as picky. You can cut it into small pieces for the foraging animals. If you know a farmer, you can ask them to take the pumpkins off your hands. For pigs and goats, a pumpkin is one of the best treats there is.

Lastly, if you’re dabbling a bit in gardening, you can process the pumpkin in question and turn it into compost (or at least add it into a compost).

In Conclusion

Keep in mind that your post-Halloween activities will greatly be determined by the type of Halloween that you have. Therefore, if you have a kid-friendly party, you might not have a hangover to deal with. If this year passes without neighborhood pranksters, the cleaning part will be a lot simpler. All in all, you now know what you’re up against and can proceed to make necessary plans.

12 Easy Costumes You Can Throw Together for Halloween

It’s time to nix Jim and Pam.

Halloween is a time to hang out with friends, eat candy, and dress up in great costumes. Of course, there is the typical alien, hippie, Jim and Pam… But, if you’re looking to elevate your costume game this Halloween, there are some costumes that will make you stand out in the crowd. And, even better, you can find these items on your own for a cheap DIY.

1. Scarlet Witch (Endgame)

Re-made famous by the recent show, Wandavision, a Scarlett Witch costume is both cool and easy. For the costume found in Endgame, you’ll need black pants, a red crop top or tank top, black boots, and a long, red jacket (or long sweater).

2. Loki (Loki on Disney+)

Another character re-made famous by a Disney+ show, Loki is the bad guy that everyone secretly loves. An easy costume would be one found in the TV show. You’ll need a grey suit, green vest, white shirt, and green tie.

3. Britney Spears (One More Time)

Celebrate the #FreeBritney movement and duplicate one of Britney’s iconic looks over the years. One of the easiest may be her look from One More Time which consists of a white tied shirt, grey sweater, black skirt, and black knee socks. And don’t forget the pigtail braids.

4. Cruella

The movie, Cruella, recently premiered and starred Emma Stone as none other than Cruella de Vil, herself. As soon as this movie came out, a huge emphasis was placed on fashion, since that was a majority of the plot. Because of that, there are several outfits you could use for Halloween. However, the easiest may be one of her all-black ensembles that includes a mid-length black skirt, black leather jacket, black gloves, and a cane. Tie it all together with a black and white wig you can find at just about any place that sells Halloween costumes.

5. Steve (Blues Clues)

Who can forget the moment not long ago when Steve from Blues Clues released a heartfelt video message? It definitely brought back nostalgia to the kids who used to watch that actor on the show before he left. Thankfully, the costume is very easy to replicate, if you’re looking to relive your childhood. All you need are khaki pants, a white collared shirt, and a green striped sweater.

6. Olivia Rodrigo

I think we all can agree that Olivia Rodrigo took the music world by storm. Between her catchy songs, incredible talent, and bubbly personality, we’ve grown to love her and her music. For an easy Olivia Rodrigo costume, all you’ll need is a pink tank top, a blue plaid skirt, some jewelry, and tons of stickers for your face. If you have a hard time keeping the stickers on, get some lash glue that is safe for your skin.

7. Bridgerton Characters

Although it seems like more work, dressing up as these iconic characters is much easier than it seems. Your best bet is to go to a thrift store and check out their dresses and/or. Nine times out of 10, you’ll be able to find something that fits the Bridgerton vibe.

8. Mabel Mora (Only Murders in the Building)

Only Murders in the Building is a whodunit show that is streamed through Hulu. The story follows three people who start a podcast to figure out who killed someone in the building they live in. Mabel Mora, played by Selena Gomez, is one of those people – and her outfits are incredible. To dress up as her, you’ll need a yellow sweater, a yellow or orange jacket, checkered pants, a yellow beanie, black boots, sunglasses, and a pair of big headphones (preferably red).

9. David Rose (Schitt’s Creek)

Another easy costume is David Rose from Schitt’s Creek – the TV show that totally took comedy to the next level. One of the most lovable characters, David Rose, has some great outfits that are easy to replicate. One of the most popular ones is the black and white outfit that he wears which can be made from a black and white sweater, black leggings or pants, a black skirt, and white sunglasses.

10. Beetlejuice

One of my favorites (and my costume this year) is none other than Beetlejuice. This iconic Halloween movie features many incredible characters to copy, but the most popular is Beetlejuice, himself. If you’re looking to copy the costume as close as possible, try and find a vertical black and white stripe suit. If not, you can improvise, much like I am this year. For a DIY version, you’ll need a vertical black and white shirt or jacket, black pants, black boots, and green hair spray (for an extra bonus, check out two makeup products I found specifically for my Beetlejuice costume).

11. Harley Quinn – The Suicide Squad

Not to be confused with Suicide Squad, the sequel to the original movie came out and featured several of the classic characters from the first movie – one of which being the infamous Harley Quinn. Harley got a drastic makeover in the second movie which makes her outfits perfect for this Halloween. You can copy one of the most popular ones with a frilly red dress, black combat boots, and two low pigtails.

12. Joe and Love (You)

Season three of the beloved TV thriller, You, dropped on October 15, with a promise of season four following soon. In seasons one and two, we (unfortunately) fell in love with two psychopaths. Why? You’ll have to watch the show and find out. Needless to say, these costumes will be hot this year. For Joe, all you’ll need is a baseball cap, blue shirt, dress pants, and a belt (bonus if you carry a book). For Love, there’s a lot of outfits you could go with, but the most iconic is one she wore at the end of the season (if you know you know). For that, you’ll need a low-cut cropped peach or tan cardigan, a long necklace, hoop earrings, and jeans.

If you haven’t given much thought to a Halloween costume for this year, take a look at the above list and see if there are any that you can piece together. Grab a friend, go thrifting, and enjoy the rest of spooky season!

15 Classic Halloween Movies to Watch for a Scary Evening In

Halloween is definitely one of the most significant times of the year. According to statistics, consumers will spend at least $10 billion this Halloween year, up from $8 billion spent last year. On average, every consumer will spend $102.74 on Halloween candy, costumes, greeting cards, and decorations, which is $10 more per consumer than last year’s numbers.

More than $3.3 billion will go towards costumes, a 27% increase from last year and the largest percentage yet. More than $3.1 billion will go towards Halloween decorations, while $3 billion will be spent on candy.

Halloween spending statistics also show that 65% of households plan to celebrate Halloween this year, compared to 58% from 2020. Households with children record an 82% interest in the seasonal celebrations. With these promising numbers, it is safe to say that the 2021 Halloween is set to be the biggest ever.

While Halloween costumes, jack-o-lanterns, and Halloween candy are great, another way to set the mood for Halloween is by binging on scary Halloween movies. If you are not into the gory, spell-binding, chainsaw-wielding, and hair-raising flicks, there are less scary classics like Hocus Pocus and Casper that can still set the Halloween mood for you.

Here are some of the best Halloween movies to watch for a scary evening with your loved ones.

The Addams Family (1991)

If you are in for a treat with your weird family, the Addams family is one of the most ideal Halloween night movies to watch. You will be humming to the Addams family theme song long after the movie is over. This is definitely one to watch with the whole family.

Monster House (2006)

If you watched this ‘horror’ movie as a child, you will be glad to know that the scary events become funnier as you grow older. As a Halloween classic, the Monster house is definitely one for the books, ideal for the whole family. One thing to learn from this movie is to never spy on your neighbors.

Scream (1996)

If you only have tolerance for one scary movie this Halloween, then you need to make it Scream. Director Wes Craven ensured this movie was a breath of fresh air when it was released in 1996 by making it different from the horror clichés the world was used to. It is no wonder that Scream is still one of the most-watched horror movies today. Scream guarantees to deliver the chills with a little wink.

Edward Scissorhands (1990)

This is yet another cult classic by Tim Burton. This is a surprisingly heartwarming story of a young man with scissors for hands. It is packed with lavish cinematography, passion, and lessons.

The Exorcist (1973)

If you are looking for a Halloween classic that will keep you up at night for fear of going to sleep, the Exorcist should definitely be on your list. This is a horror movie fan’s favorite that follows the story of a possessed young girl and tells the story of a mother trying to save her daughter through an exorcism.

Get Out (2017)

This is a clear depiction of how quickly a new movie can become a Halloween classic. This movie is guaranteed to get your heart pumping as you sit at the edge of your seat all night long. It features a black photographer who faces casual racism after going to his white girlfriend’s home for the first time. The dynamics of the story get creepier with time.

Paranormal Activity (2007)

Scary does not begin to describe the horrors you will experience watching Paranormal Activity. The franchise used ‘found footage’ to follow a couple living in a haunted house. If you are into some paranormal activity, you are in luck because you have up to six films in the franchise to enjoy.

The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)

Whether you think of this as a Christmas story or Halloween movie, this is definitely a classic that should feature in the list of Halloween movies to watch this year. Follow the Pumpkin King’s journey as he seeks to turn Halloween into a cheerier holiday like Christmas. Definitely one to be watched by the whole family.

Trick ‘r Treat (2007)

This is a scary film that takes place on Halloween in the town of Warren Valley. At the center of the film is an unusual child, Sam working to ensure none of the characters break the rules of Halloween as the consequences are deadly.

The Silence of the Lambs (1991)

Fair warning: this film is not to be watched by the faint at heart. Follow this FBI agent as she hunts for a highly disturbed serial killer. The memories of the scenes are sure to remain with you long after the movie is over.

It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown (1966)

This is a Halloween classic suitable for the whole family. For over half a century, Snoopy and his gang have been playing the role of getting every family into the Halloween spirit. This animated Halloween movie is sure to make any adult nostalgic for their childhood Halloween memories.

The Omen (1976)

Can you even consider yourself a true horror buff if you haven’t watched the Omen? Watch Gregory Peck and Lee Remick showcase their talent in this 70s demonic 70s Halloween classic. It is not termed as the most cursed movie of all time for nothing.

Hocus Pocus (1993)

You cannot create a list of Halloween movies without including this fan favorite. Gather your ‘sistaaahs’ around for a magical and fun Hocus Pocus night. Join the iconic Sundersons sisters as they set the mood for the spooky season. This movie has become one of the most successful Halloween movies of all time.

Halloween (2018)

After many sequel flops following the success of the original Halloween movie of 1978, the 2018 version was so perfectly done that it wiped away the previous remake flops to become one of the best new age remakes of old Halloween movies of all time. If you loved Jamie Lee Curtis in the first Halloween movie, you will love her return in this 2018 sequel as she tries to deal with her past trauma.

Ghostbusters (1984)

Before the release of ghostbusters in 1984, supernatural creatures like demons or ghosts were never seen as comedy material. The ghostbusters set the path for horror-comedies like Happy death day or ready or not. This is one of the best classics to watch if you want a blend of scary with a bit of laughter.

Happy Halloween.
