7 Signs You’re Meant to Live Near a Beach

I’ve been spending every summer at the beach since I was 2 years old. Needless to say, I look forward to those warmer months as soon as we start to get that first chilly day in the fall. And don’t even get me started on winter – the holidays are enjoyable for a bit, and then I’m pretty much over it.

This year will actually be the first summer I won’t be living at the beach (what do you mean I have to be a real person with a full-time job?), but of course I plan on heading there every weekend that I possibly can.

Here are a few indications that you’re destined to live near a beach one day:

  1. While some get bothered by sand and the concept of being barefoot 90% of the time, you wouldn’t have it any other way.

You appreciate the notion of being carefree, and the simplicity of life is appealing to you. You also don’t need to live in an extravagant, fast-paced city to be content. Instead, good friends, good weather, and good times are just about all you need.

The ironic thing is when I was a baby I initially refused to go on the beach because I was “scared” of it. My mom was consistently forced to attempt to console me as I threw a public temper tantrum about having to touch the greatly-feared sand. I have no real explanation for this, but obviously had a change of heart.

  1. You have a summer playlist, and you listen to it all year long.

Even in the dead of winter, you find nothing wrong with blasting feel-good, beach jams, and pretending you’re “knee-deep in the water somewhere.” Throwbacks are never left out of the mix, either. “Ocean Avenue” by Yellowcard, anyone? Plus, let’s be real- you just can’t trust anybody who doesn’t enjoy listening to “Feeling This” by Blink 182 from time to time.

  1. To you, there’s no such thing as being too tan.

You’re convinced that you’re as pale as a ghost in the winter when you’re still about 3 shades darker than all of your friends. In the summer, you’re approaching the territory of changing races.

  1. You don’t understand people who take skiing and snowboarding trips.

Wait….people actually enjoy participating in outdoor activities when it’s cold out? But why?

  1. You completely lack an adequate winter wardrobe.

What do you mean it’s not acceptable to wear cropped tops in the middle of January?

  1. Your pre-teen years consisted of meeting boys on the boardwalk and texting all your friends about your “summer romance.”

He took you out on a “date” to the arcade and kissed you on the cheek afterward – I guess you can say things got pretty serious.

Clearly, your future husband will spot you running into the ocean Baywatch-style and confess his undying love for you.

  1. The water is never too cold.

You actually get upset when your friends dip their feet in the ocean for a millisecond and then chicken out. Honestly, it might be necessary to hand them another drink – they won’t be so scared after that. (Just don’t let them drown – there may have been a few close calls during my Senior Week 2010.)

Don’t worry, beach bums – only 83 days until the first day of summer!

My Top Ten For Summer 2020

Summer time is the perfect time to enjoy nature and the people that you love.

It is a time to unwind and have fun. And it is a time to work on yourself. It is a time for love and laughter.  Here is a list of things that I will be enjoying this summer.

1. Grilling:

We have been cooped up all winter cooking and heating up the house. Now that the sun is out and the summer heat is turning up I am so excited to cook outside. There are so many benefits. It is such a healthy way to eat. You can grill almost anything that you want, and bonus for those of us who hate the clean up after we cook. Most of the mess is throw away. Take that foil off the BBQ and toss it in the trash.

2. Laying by the pool:

There is something about pulling a towel out of the closet and laying in your favorite lawn chair with a glass of sweet tea while the dog plays in the back yard. Then jumping in to get cooled down.

3. Driving with the windows down:

Feel that fresh air coming in. Take in the moment. Breath and know that this is a time to live. Everything is so at alive right now, the plants, the animals. The sun is shinning and we are here lets enjoy the freshness of life.

4. Connect with nature:

Take the dog for a walk. Without music and enjoy the life going on around you. Jump on the boat with family or friends. Grab a beer and jump into the middle of the lake. Feel how small you really are in this great big world and put life back into perspective.

5 Ways the Summer Will Make You Swoon

Swoon over Summer

Summer and swooning in 5 ways

Much has happened since my last blogpost, so this one will be more of a personal nature; one of observations on the human condition, of reflections and of previously untold stories. Indeed, this blogpost will be about the joys of summer; or, if you prefer lists, 5 Ways the Summer Will Make You Swoon (which we all know it does).

5. The Greenery

For me, seeing fully adorned trees and flowers in the peak of their blossoms is a reason to revel in nature’s fullest beauty. As one who lives in a place of four seasons (summer being the shortest one), it’s all we can do but enjoy every moment of it. Once the buds come out, people start smiling a little more, joking around a little more, and actually leave their houses to wander farther than from their door to the car. It’s basically a miracle.
4. The Birds and the Bees
Seriously, though. Without the bees, where would all of the flowers be? And, not to mention all of those bird calls at 4 or 5 in the morning, waking you up from your slumber by their incessant mating cries? Magical, that’s what that is. Who else can you count on to wake you from your slumber to enjoy the break of day? For those who may not yet know, this is most gloriously experienced while camping in tents.
