How To Choose The Perfect Villa Escape

Most people can’t wait to start traveling again, but not everyone is keen to stay at a hotel. So the answer is a reclusive villa where you can enjoy privacy, freedom, independence with the ability to be as quiet (or as noisy) as you like.
Perhaps you want to get away with a group of girlfriends, arrange a big family celebration or find a romantic hideaway for two. Here’s our pick of the best villas, with many of them featuring private pools, from the experts at 101 Holidays.

Get away with the girls

If you want to relax with a small group of girlfriends, a villa is perfect. Your best option is one with lots of bathrooms, and within walking distance of bars and restaurants. For example, on the Greek island of Corfu, Vintage Travel suggests Arhondiko which has four double / twin rooms with ensuite bathrooms, plus a single. Local tavernas are a short walk away.
In Provence in the South of France, you could rent Mas Mayeaux with Oliver’s Travels. It sleeps up to 12 and enjoys complete privacy, but there are shops, bars and restaurants all within a short walk.

Celebrate in style

If you’ve got a big birthday or anniversary to celebrate – and a budget to match – you can rent a superb villa with staff to look after your every need. In Tuscany, A&K Villas has Villa Machiavelli, a 15th-Century conversion with 10 rooms and suites sleeping up to 20 people. It’s fully-staffed with indoor and outdoor pools.
How about the Caribbean? In Barbados, CV Villas suggests the spectacular Crystal Springs which was decorated by Oliver Messel and sits directly on the beach. It sleeps 10 and is really the last word in luxury.
European Waterways operates luxury hotel barges on some of the most beautiful rivers and canals in Europe. You can book a berth or charter the whole boat with gourmet dining, fine wines and excursions included.

Just the two of you

In steamy Andalucia in the south of Spain, we couldn’t imagine anywhere more romantic than Casa Rustica, available to rent through Vintage Travel. It oozes rustic charm and has a private pool overlooking lakes and mountains.
Cornwall has been put firmly on the global map by the G7 Summit. In the lovely village of Fowey, Rural Retreats has Barnacles, a gorgeous waterfront cottage with beaches and pubs on your doorstep.
If you want to be be on the water, Fleewinter has crewed yachts sailing between the Greek islands. You can take a berth for two or charter the whole thing.

Get wed in paradise

It’s estimated that 240,000 weddings have been postponed in the UK alone during the pandemic. The figures worldwide will stretch into millions. The importance of creating special memories is more clear than ever. A romantic setting, a gorgeous place to stay and plenty of bedrooms for family and friends. You may want to stay at a hotel.

With Virgin Limited Edition, you can hire Son Bunyola, Sir Richard Branson’s private estate on the island of Mallorca. It is made up of three separate villas and is absolutely superb.
Or head to the romantic Scottish Highlands where The Big Domain has Highland Hall, an elegant country house set in six acres of gardens and woodland. Salmon fishing, golf and shooting are all available on your doorstep.

Multi-generational family reunions

One of the biggest post-pandemic travel trends is multi-generational family get-togethers. Typically, the mums and dads organize it and the grandparents pay. You’re looking for a house that is child- friendly and close to a beach, but without too many steep steps.
Turquoise Holidays suggests Niyama Private Islands in the Maldives. It’s a cool, contemporary resort with lots of playful touches and one island dedicated to families with a choice of villa accommodation.
In the Greek Pelepponese, GIC The Villa Collection suggests Sea View Villa which sleeps up to 10 with daily maid service and the option of hiring a private chef. Beach and tavernas are within walking distance, and Granny and Grandad have the option of taking the master suite in the main villa with the rest of the family in the guest wing.

5 Reasons to Move to The Virgin Islands

About 4 years ago, I found myself on a little rock in the middle of the ocean. This rock was filled with booze soaked days, sun bathing, salty hair, and sink lizards (itty bitty lizards that would keep you company in the bathroom. Though this place was filled with ups and downs- like suicide showers, yikes!- everyone should experience it at least once. Here are five good reasons to say good bye to the grind and hello to island time.

1. You learn to appreciate slowing down

Island time is a real thing.  And not just a restaurant with the best pizza…another reason why one should should move to the Virgin islands, but I digress. The days move slower and processes like going to the grocery store or the bank take many hours.  In the states, you can drive over to Target, pull out some money and buy everything you need in one place. Things are different in the islands. You may stand in line for hours at the bank, or shop at several grocery stores because the shipment at your favorite is late and the shelves are bare. Though these things are frustrating at best, after awhile you learn to deal and comfort yourself with happy hour. Which brings me to…

2. Happy Hour

I mean do I really need to say more? What’s better than shimmying up to a bar on the beach, buying your favorite libation and basking in the sun. Nothing. Nothing at all.

3. You’ll meet some amazing people

The islands are a great place to meet some of the most free-spirited and adventurous people you’ll ever find. Many people flock to the sea to sail the open waters, escape the 9-5 drudgery, or to spend a season before they journey to their next exotic locale. You’ll never feel lacking in good conversation and inspiration. It might just inspire you to book your own one way ticket to Bali or Thailand or wherever your little island heart desires.

4. You’ll learn to appreciate the little things

Like I said before, grocery shopping is damn hard. Any time you go stateside to escape island fever you’ll be astounded by how much stuff there really is. That being said, you’ll be equally overwhelmed because you’ve learned to live without. Crowded stores will overload your senses and you’ll miss the quiet peacefulness of your rock.

5. It’s an experience you’ll never forget

Between the good, bad and ugly sides of the island you’ll always look back on those moments and treasure them.  And if you ever feel like you need a place to hide and soak up the sun the island will always welcome you back with open arms.

Violet Bent Backwards Over the Grass- Lana Del Rey- Our Review

What The Heck Are They? The Scoop

Lana Del Rey– Shows of her radio show whisper and sultry tone in her under forty minute audio spoken word book of poems. With light background music, Lana shares what feels like excerpts from her diary. A coming of age, emotional, and vulnerable audiobook.

The spoken word recording includes 14 poems performed by Lana Del Rey accompanied by music from Grammy Award-winning songwriter/producer Jack Antonoff

What They Say

Violet Bent Backwards Over the Grass is brought to life in an unprecedented spoken word audiobook which features Lana Del Rey reading fourteen select poems from the book accompanied by music from Grammy Award–winning musician Jack Antonoff.

Violet Bent Backwards Over the Grass is the title poem of the book and the first poem I wrote of many. Some of which came to me in their entirety, which I dictated and then typed out, and some that I worked laboriously picking apart each word to make the perfect poem. They are eclectic and honest and not trying to be anything other than what they are and for that reason I’m proud of them, especially because the spirit in which they were written was very authentic.” —Lana Del Rey

Lana’s breathtaking first book solidifies her further as “the essential writer of her times” (The Atlantic). The collection features more than thirty poems, many exclusive to the book: Never to Heaven, The Land of 1,000 Fires, Past the Bushes Cypress Thriving, LA Who Am I to Love You?, Tessa DiPietro, Happy, Paradise Is Very Fragile, Bare Feet on Linoleum, and many more.

Violet Bent Backwards Over the Grass is also brought to life in an unprecedented spoken word audiobook which features Lana Del Rey reading fourteen select poems from the book accompanied by music from Grammy Award–winning musician Jack Antonoff.

This beautiful hardcover edition showcases Lana’s typewritten manuscript pages alongside her original photography. The result is an extraordinary poetic landscape that reflects the unguarded spirit of its creator.

When you listen, think “radio-show”, raw sound, with fuzzy grains, reminding you of a black and white film, or a twilight zone acoustic, filled with dreamy etherialism that ropes you in, even if you are sitting somewhere busy and bustling– you will get lost in her tone and her words.

My Thoughts

If you are a Lana Del Rey fan, and a lover of her lyrics and her voice.. she will take you somewhere else. Her meditative voice, along with ocean and car backgrounds with similar musical notes, guide you get into Lana’s world. Almost as if we are not part of her world. And she is filling us in on all human feelings, perspectives, behaviors and emotions. Because we need Lana Del Rey to explain everything to us. But what she is really doing is sharing with us what we are all feeling. Her sweet ultra feminine voice, reminds us to soften, and notice, notice everything. One of the most poignant things about this audiobook, is that she reminds you just how present she can be, and with every meticulous attention to detail, But with enough fantasy and dreamy consequence. Her poems are filled with intelligent worlds and just enough rhyme to feel perfectly poetic.

She takes the time to defend herself from her critics and share parts of her life in poem, romanticizing LA, and giving her fans a chance to learn more about her. With her ability to whisper as she talks about the “Nowness” she offers the listener her zest for domesticity while we see her struggle to remain in her petulant youth. In her early thirties, she questions stardom, politics, her upbringing, and love. Her honesty is raw, and you feel her stuck between wanting to settle down and desperately, dreaming to fly away… and you cannot help but guess what is actually real or what she conjured up.

Her inner work which is clearly on staying focused, and finding structure in a currently questionable world, while sharing without wanting to overshare… is all of us right now. And when you finish the thirty nine minutes you just want her to keep talking because you are rooting for her. And you can feel her coming into her own. Her topics range from love to global warming, to career changes, her energy is infectious. She dreams, but she has a realistic view of our culture, her role in it and the harsh reality of the world.

At a time when we feel most vulnerable, Lana tells us that is exactly how we are all supposed to be feeling right now. And that is perfectly ok. So embrace the “Nowness”.

The Down-low on The Downside

Unfortunately, it is only thirty nine minutes long. And if you want the hard copy you will have to patiently wait until Sept 29th. In a pandemic world filled of podcasts, netflix binges, and bike rides.. I found joy in daydreaming with Lana in her spoken word. She really took me somewhere else.

Violet Bent Backwards Over the Grass is a too short teaser. You can get the full version on vinyl and Audio CD via amazon here.

Lana reminds us beautifully just how big the imagination can be, and by listening… not watching. Because those old radio shows made the brain synapses and emotional heartstrings fire so much more than a tv or video can do.

Our Overall Rating  5 out of 5

I am speechless, Lana Del Rey has managed to navigate this pandemic as an artist, offering us up something unique, fresh, and yet oddly familiar. You can download her book for free here.
