7 Things You Should Consider Before Getting A Pet !

Yes, they’re furry and cute. Yes, they are good company. However, are you ready for a pet? When you adopt an animal, it should be a forever home. While shelters may be overrun with animals, adopting one and bringing it back six months later is worse. If you’re kicking around the idea of getting a furry friend or two here are some things you need to consider.

Can you afford it?

Pets are not cheap. Dog food runs a nationwide average of $20 a bag. That will last you about two weeks depending on the size of the dog. Cats and dogs need to be spayed and neutered. They need vaccinations, kennel cough nasal spray, flea, and tick protection, and heartworm medication. Kitty litter is expensive. If you don’t want your house to smell like kitty pee-pee you have to change it every couple of days. And if they get sick (and they will get sick) the vet’s bill can run into the hundreds. If you go away, you’ll have to kennel your pet somehow and kennels can’t take your pet unless you have proof they are up to date on shots. Not. Cheap.

Do you have time?

Dogs need to be walked every day, more than once a day. Will your pet be stuck in a hot or freezing apartment while you’re at work? Do you have time on the weekends to take them on longer walks? Do you plan to join a doggie park? (Again, consider the cost.) Cats are easier if you don’t have time to walk a pet. If you’re serious about owning a cat, consider getting two so they have company.

Do you have the space?

Dogs especially need space. Their beds are big and clumsy. They splash their water and food around the kitchen. They will expect to sleep near (or with) you.
