How My Healing Journey Helped Me Discover My Business

Finding My Calling

I didn’t come into my ability as a spiritual healer or an intuitive until after I had cancer, which
was in 2000. It returned in 2004, which was when everything ignited for me. Although I was born
interacting with God or Source (I was not religious and had no religious training) directly, as well
as the angels guide ascended masters. It wasn’t until I was trying to figure out how to heal the
cancer, that I had my first awakening to my own abilities to heal something as significant as
cancer.

Cancer And My Awakening

It was during my first round of cancer (April 2000) that I started to look at what was taking
place within me from a different perspective so that I could understand how my body came to
have cancer. And because the cancer was in my cervix, I became even more curious as to how
and why it would show up there. I started to look at what cancer meant energetically as well as to
my cervix, and that was it; everything changed with how I viewed the illness.

During the first round of cancer, I recognized that I was not in love with myself, so my first step
to getting rid of the cancer was in removing the negative thinking about myself. So I started
eating very healthy and taking certain supplements that I knew would help benefit me while I worked
synergistically to help me heal from cancer. I started working out and fueling my body with energy at the same time I was releasing the discordant toxic energy that I was carrying from my day-to-day.

More Cancer and Self- Discovery

In 2004, when the cancer returned for a second time, I realized I needed to change something
else, but I didn’t know what that something else was. So I embarked on a journey to deeper self-
discovery, which is when I realized my thoughts, words, and actions were combining into an
energy that was making me sick. When I realized this, I was able to understand why I created
cancer in my cervix, which then led me to understand what I needed to do in order to heal the
cancer and heal my cervix.

This was so exciting to me that I started sharing information with people who were seeking me
out to share with me that they had recently become sick and couldn’t understand what made
them sick. This was when I decided to look for a chiropractor and continue treating my body healthily.

Wellness Coaching

In 2004, I met a chiropractor who, after talking to me about cancer, offered me an opportunity to rent one of his extra treatment rooms so I could work with his patients. I went to school for integrative nutrition to become a Wellness Coach and started my journey with reiki, later becoming a Reiki master teacher. By 2008, I left my corporate job that I had been working at for 14 years to do wellness coaching business full time.

Understanding My Inuition

I’ve always known I was intuitive and felt I had a special purpose. I remember, as a child, thinking
I was here for a bigger purpose than just being my parents’ child. It wasn’t until my bout
with cancer that my abilities and my awareness grew. I allowed myself to expand into new ways
of thinking and seeing the world. This meant that I was also expanding in new ways of seeing
illness in the human body. During the time that I worked for the chiropractor, which was two
years, I became extremely busy seeing clients who had health issues. I was doing a mix of
wellness coaching and reiki with them. Their response to the information that I was bringing through concerning their illness or the situation that they were living in and experiencing was
so validating for me that it helped me trust my abilities that much more.

Herbal Medicine

Part of my journey with cancer had me seeking out healers for my own well-being, and through
this process, I found herbal medicine. One mentor, in particular, caught my attention as she
spoke about simple medicine and people’s medicine, and I felt like that was me, so I decided
to study with her through one of her online programs, and that was how I got started in herbal
medicine back in 2009.

Skincare Solutions

I’ve been working with people and herbs for healing since 2009, but it wasn’t until 2019 that
my friend and I realized our skin was being destroyed by the skincare products we were
buying. It had gotten to the point where we were buying big brand names and paying tons of money, and the results were always the same: our skin was dry, lifeless, and dull. We started talking about
making something for ourselves. It wasn’t even a thought to make any kind of product. We were just trying to recover our own skin, which was just being annihilated by
what was being offered in this skincare industry.

What made this special was that my friend is a hairstylist and has been in the industry for forty years with tons of experience regarding hair care and skin care. So, we combined our knowledge and started to formulate a serum for our skin. It wasn’t a success right away; we went through a lot of money, many products, and many failures before we started recognizing how herbs, oils, and butter work together. It was during this time that we started to get excited with the small results we were having and thought maybe we could create a business surrounding wellness and skincare products. This was something I had always wanted to do but never took it to the next level. This moment seemed like the perfect time to move forward with an herbal-based business.

My friend Beth and I are equal co-owners of Loving Earth Botanicals, Inc. We sat down one day
after creating a facial serum that we both really liked and started to talk about the possibility of

I feel it’s important to be clear about your intention when you are thinking about business
decisions. When we are clear, we can be calm within, and when we are calm within, we can be very clear on what we are feeling toward the decision at hand. Intuition will always play an
important part in navigating my path regarding our business because it helps me not have to
navigate my way or keep my hands on the wheel, my intuition, or universe as I call it, is doing
that for me, my only job is to follow the breadcrumbs.

Advice To My Ten Year Old Self 

If I could tell my 10-year-old self something, it would be to love yourself to the deepest degree you
can and never ever let anyone tell you you can’t do anything; you are not smart enough, good
enough, pretty enough, etc. If you want to do something, just do it. If you don’t like it, do
something else. It’s that simple. We make it complicated. But it starts with self-love first; loving
ourselves is the key to living a happy life. Doing what makes us happy and fulfilled is critical to
our health and well-being.

How To Use The Shower To Keep Your Skin Beautiful

Too often our body skin sees us spending so much time and care on our face skin and thinks, “WTF!” Skin is skin and we should be caring for our body skin just as much as our face skin.

At the end of the day, our skin is our largest organ, and it has a huge job of keeping us alive through its hard-to-penetrate exterior. And for those that keep saying our skin is like a sponge – the opposite is true. After all, if our skin were truly a sponge, you would ultimately be dead. Our skin’s key role is keeping stuff OUT.

So am I proposing that you use all of your face skincare products on your body? Absolutely not. That would be way too expensive and unsustainable for most of us that aren’t millionaires. However, I do propose you create a daily and weekly regimen for your body skin just like you do for your face skin.

 

So how should you go about this?

#1: Firstly, your face skincare routine should include your neck and chest. You’ll thank me in 20 years.

#2: Remember that moisturizing your body skin is mandatory, not optional. A healthy skin barrier is all about keeping vital lipids and natural moisture in the skin. And every time we wash and cleanse, we are essentially disrupting that moisture barrier a bit – especially for those of us that shower 2-3x per day. The best way to take care of your body skin is to always moisturize after bathing – and to also use soap or cleanser sparingly, and in more needed areas vs. extremities that don’t need a deep cleanse.

#3: Shoot for exfoliating only 1-2x per week. As per my tip #2 above, anytime we strip our natural lipid barrier, we impose a drying effect on the skin. So cleansing and exfoliating should be done strategically for clean and smooth, yet still hydrated skin. I recommend using a gentle shower scrub (I love anything from Dove or Aveeno made with additional hydrators) one or two times per week only since more than that might really dry out the skin or cause sensitivity. And remember, shaving is also a form of exfoliation.*

*Pro tip: Exfoliate before you shave your legs for a super smooth effect.

#4: Lean into corrective skincare ingredients to address body skin concerns. Even though it may not be sustainable to use your entire skincare routine on your body, there are a few ingredients and products that are marketed for face skin, but can effectively be used to address body skin conditions like back-ne, eczema, psoriasis, keratosis pilaris, ingrown hairs, stretch marks, hyperpigmentation, sensitivity, etc. Here are my tips for addressing a few of these body skin conditions:

● Back-ne: To reduce back skin blemishes, I recommend using a 2% salicylic acid cleanser and/or exfoliator on the area 1-2x per day and finish with a salicylic acid moisturizer.
● Eczema: Avoid hot water and excessive cleansing/bathing. Use a colloidal oat-based cleanser like Aveeno and try not to bathe more than once per day. Apply a heavy, petrolatum-based moisturizer like Aquaphor to keep essential moisture in the skin afterward.
● Keratosis Pilaris: This “chicken skin” condition is typically experienced on the back of arms and legs or even on the buttocks. To smooth the skin, I recommend using a gentle body scrub on the area 2x per week and finishing with a light moisturizer. You can even add a bit of your favorite retinoid on top to keep things smooth over time.
● Ingrown hairs: The best way to prevent ingrown hairs is to keep up with consistent exfoliation (2x per week) and ensure you’re shaving in the right direction – with the hair. You can also use a 2% salicylic acid moisturizer on the area to keep the skin smooth and clean.
● Stretch marks: Stretch marks are essentially scars where collagen has been damaged. The best way to treat stretch marks is to keep the area exfoliated and moisturized and to use your facial retinoid on the area 3x per week. Any products that contain vitamins A, C, and E are also helpful in rebuilding that collagen, too.
● Hyperpigmentation: I would recommend using a 10% AHA cleanser on any area that you want to lighten and brighten (for all skin tones). You can also use your retinoid as well. Otherwise, the typical moisturizer and exfoliate works well, too.
● Sensitivity: For more reactive or sensitive skin, I recommend a similar strategy to my eczema-sufferers. Try to limit bathing and use a gentle cleanser like Dove or Aveeno, along with a thick, nourishing moisturizer like Aquaphor, Dove, Lubriderm, etc.

#5: And DO NOT SKIP SPF! Any area of the skin that is exposed to UV rays during the day should have broad-spectrum, SPF 30+ sunscreen applied to them. No excuses.

 

Other things to consider:

● The harder the water, the more drying it can be to the skin. I recommend soft water for more hydrated, radiant skin.
● Hot water is extremely drying and often damaging.. Try your hardest to take a warm shower to save your skin.
● Per the last consideration, don’t wash your face in the shower unless it’s lukewarm.
● Apply your moisturizer on damp skin, it will work better.
● Never let the water evaporate from the skin. This will pull more water out of the skin and leave your body skin dry. Always towel off, and apply moisturizer right away.
● Dry brushing can be a great way to exfoliate the body skin, while also increasing blood circulation which increases hydration in the skin naturally. It is also a great lymph drainage tool.
● Many of us need an easy-to-apply moisturizer for our body or we won’t use it. I always tell my clients to learn what kind of applicator is easiest to apply – a pump, a jar, a tube, or even a spray. Learn what you’ll actually use and lean into it. Because the best moisturizer is the one you use!

However, as a makeup artist and skincare enthusiast, I know that summer is one of the most brutal times for your skin. But, there are things you can do to save the skin you’re in, while still enjoying the dog days of summer.

1. Use Sunscreen

If you take nothing else from this article, take this: USE. SUNSCREEN. It is estimated that one in five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime. That’s a pretty big chance of something that I’m sure none of us want to develop. Thankfully, skincare brands and even sunscreen brands are all over it. Moisturizer should be a part of everyone’s skincare routine, no matter their skin type. This is especially true when you’re skin may be taking in some extra sunshine. To keep your skin in check, moisturize at least once a day – right after you wash your face. For my makeup-wearing people, this should be twice a day: once in the morning and once at night after you take your makeup off.

3. Cooling Spray

I live in the south which means brutal heat and humidity. Hello 100° weather, hello sweat… The elephant in the room that no one wants to talk about. But I have news for you: everyone sweats. However, that doesn’t mean you have to really suffer through it. Let’s all thank the skincare gods that they’ve come up with an easy fix.

I’ve always been an advocate for Mario Badescu products. Although some may be a little pricey, I have yet to encounter one that doesn’t do what it says. Their facial refreshing sprays are no different. Like a good skincare brand should do, they’ve produced several different sprays for different skin types and skin concerns:

  1. Aloe, herbs, and rose water

4. Check the UV Index

The Ultraviolet Index (UV index) is a measurement created in the 90s used to find the strength of sunburn-producing ultraviolet radiation. Don’t let the word radiation scare you. In simpler (and less scary) terms, it’s the unit of measurement to see how intense the sun’s rays are. The scale is color-coded and number-coded and goes from 1-11+. The lower the number, the lower the exposure.

The lower the number, the “safer” it is to be out in the sun since there’s less sun exposure. Before you go out and tan, check your local UV index to see how long you can safely spend outside, what the recommended SPF is, etc.

5. Hydrate

Let’s be honest, we all should probably be doing this a lot more than we currently do. However, this is especially pertinent in the summertime. Drinking water is said to help clear up your skin – and trust me, it really does. Especially if you use sunscreen you don’t normally use, water is essential to keep your skin in tip-top shape.

Hydration is also essential when it comes to combatting heatstroke or other side effects caused by sun exposure. Of course, other help for heatstroke is cold water exposure (pools, ice baths, cold showers), rest, a colder environment… It may take away from your sun time, but it’s worth it to keep your body’s equilibrium in check.

Summertime can be relaxing, fun, exciting, and anything else you want it to be. In using these five tips, you can help to make sure your skin has the same amount of fun you do.

Each single-dose packet ensures you get a fresh, potent formula with every application.”

This mask seemingly has it all, but what does the skin say?

The mask was a white, paste-like consistency with little granules in it for exfoliation. When applying it, it instantly made my skin tingle. I have naturally sensitive skin, so really any mask will tingle for me. As it dried, I started feeling a cool sensation on my skin – and the feeling grew as I took it off. By the time it was all off of my skin, I felt like I had dunked my face in a bucket of ice water – but not in a bad way.

My skin instantly felt rejuvenated.

Here’s the bottom line: although a little pricey, this mask is good for a one-time fix – that’s even what it’s advertised as. With a majority of face masks, you need to use them for a certain amount of time before seeing results. With this 8-minute mask, the results were instant.

My only note would be that if your skin is sensitive, do a patch test beforehand.

Overall, Wonderskin really knocked it out of the park with this. Check out other products made by the company and see how you can start introducing new and improved items into your skincare routine.

Remember: taking care of your skin is not a “one size fits all” (or all of the time). Just as the seasons change, so should your skincare routine based on the conditions around you. For the winter months, consider investing in a moisturizer for drier skin. In the summer, look for a BB or CC cream that has extra SPF. Whatever you do, take good care of your skin – you’ll thank me later.
