The Wonder of Wonderskin’s 8-Minute Face Mask

Because who doesn’t love a new face mask?

With the winter months coming, I think we all can agree that our skin will need a little TLC. Between the cold temperatures, dry weather, and brutal wind, your skin will most likely take a beating during the season. But, that doesn’t mean that you can’t revive it. Let me present to you the IT’S A MIRACLE 8 Minute Mask from Wonderskin (brought to you by an affiliate marketing company, OAK Digital).

Now, I know what you’re thinking… What makes this different than all the other face masks on the market? Let’s start with the company.

Wonderskin is a beauty company that sells makeup and skincare products. Their ingredients stay skin-healthy and all products are designed with the condition of your skin in mind. The company chooses beauty experts and pros to develop products and formulas that are actually good for your skin.

The science behind it definitely doesn’t lie.

Wonderskin has also had its fair share of exposure. The brand has been featured in pretty high-up media sources – the Wall Street Journal, US Weekly, Today, Allure, Byrdie, and People Magazine, to name a few. Users and reviewers have raved about their products, so, naturally, I had to give it a go myself.

I was sent their beauty mask to review, and I was skeptical at first.

For a retail price of $39.50, I had some pretty high expectations. The box I received came with eight individually-wrapped packets that are the perfect size for one use – not to mention, very easy to travel with.

In the words of the website, “Picture this: tighter, smoother, more even-toned skin in minutes that stays incredible-looking for hours. It’s not a dream! It’s our IT’S A MIRACLE 8 Minute Mask for face, neck, and hands. Featuring our unique InvisiMatrix complex, this quickie treatment forms an invisible water-repellent layer on skin that lifts, tightens, and blurs so all the little things that bug you (fine lines, crepiness, spots, rough texture) are less visible for hours afterwards. Packed with vitamin C, niacinamide, and other all-star ingredients, it also improves skin’s softness and appearance over time with twice-weekly use. Each single-dose packet ensures you get a fresh, potent formula with every application.”

This mask seemingly has it all, but what does the skin say?

The mask was a white, paste-like consistency with little granules in it for exfoliation. When applying it, it instantly made my skin tingle. I have naturally sensitive skin, so really any mask will tingle for me. As it dried, I started feeling a cool sensation on my skin – and the feeling grew as I took it off. By the time it was all off of my skin, I felt like I had dunked my face in a bucket of ice water – but not in a bad way.

My skin instantly felt rejuvenated.

Here’s the bottom line: although a little pricey, this mask is good for a one-time fix – that’s even what it’s advertised as. With a majority of face masks, you need to use them for a certain amount of time before seeing results. With this 8-minute mask, the results were instant.

My only note would be that if your skin is sensitive, do a patch test beforehand.

Overall, Wonderskin really knocked it out of the park with this. Check out other products made by the company and see how you can start introducing new and improved items into your skincare routine.

Remember: taking care of your skin is not a “one size fits all” (or all of the time). Just as the seasons change, so should your skincare routine based on the conditions around you. For the winter months, consider investing in a moisturizer for drier skin. In the summer, look for a BB or CC cream that has extra SPF. Whatever you do, take good care of your skin – you’ll thank me later.

7 Tips to Prevent Acne

Acne is a common skin disorder, and can appear in the form of pimples, blackheads and whiteheads. A few factors contributing to the development of acne are build-up of dead skin cells, overactive oil glands, skin inflammation, and bacteria present in pores. Even genetics can trigger acne.

The causes can be identified by a doctor or a dermatologist, and they can help with the most effective treatment. You can also get treatment for acne online through services that provide personalized professional prescriptions by a medical team. Acne can occur anywhere on your body, but it is most common to have a breakout on your face. There is no sure way of preventing facial acne and you may have to try various treatments to find what works best for you. However, there are a few simple things you can do to reduce its severity.

Wash your face

Since excess oil and dirt can trigger acne, it’s important for you to properly wash your face. However, try not to overdo it, as washing your face more than twice a day can prove to be counterproductive. An alcohol-free cleanser will work the best. Properly washing entails warm water, a mild cleanser applied gently in circular motion with fingers and a thorough rinse.

Know your skin

Skin type is not a determinant of acne, but oily skin is the most prone to pimples and acne. Knowing your skin type will help you choose the right skincare products that work with your skin and do not cause harm. This can make a huge difference in the severity of your acne.

Moisturize

If you’re using products to deal with acne, they might be drying your skin out. It’s important to bring the moisture back to prevent dryness and peeling skin. Moisturizers are available for all skin types.

Stay hydrated

Dehydration can cause redness and inflammation. It can also make your skin produce more oil, leading to acne. It is thus important to keep your body well-hydrated and drink the recommended amounts of water every day.

Avoid touching your face

Hands carry bacteria and grime which can be transferred onto your face if you touch it regularly, which can clog your pores. If you avoid touching your face often, it can make a big difference to your acne issue.

Limit sun exposure

Exposure to the sun over a long time can cause major skin problems beyond acne. It can dry out your skin, resulting in it producing more oil and causing black pores. In the long run, sun exposure may even cause skin cancer. It is important to wear sunscreen often to keep your skin healthy and safe.

Hair products

Keeping your hair clean and away from your face can help prevent acne. Washing it as and when required based on your hair type is important. Keep an eye on the hair products you’re using, as they might also trigger acne. Choosing the right hair care product will not only help in preventing a breakout, but it will also act as hair loss treatment that keeps your hair healthy.

Some other methods of prevention are reducing stress, a healthy diet and avoiding pimple popping. Antibiotics and tea tree oil might help too. While there is no foolproof way to prevent acne completely, the tips listed above can definitely help you manage it.

5 Dermatologist-Approved Skin Care Tips to Age-Proof Your Complexion

Retaining that youthful radiance is one of our main goals when we’re choosing the best products and methods to improve our beauty routine. We want to prevent early signs of aging, eliminate or minimize wrinkles, avoid sun damage, and of course, make sure there are no blemishes in sight. This, however, can be quite a tall order for those who live in urban environments, surrounded by pollution. Add genetics into the mix, and you know that it can be tough to retain that glow.

However, following tried and tested, and above all, dermatologist-approved advice is perhaps the only way to do that. Researching what dermatologists have to say on anti-aging products and solutions has helped define the following list of tips and suggestions for age-proofing your skin.

There’s no such thing as too early

The very first thing so many people ask when they discuss the issue of anti-aging routines is when they should begin applying the right methods and products. Every experienced dermatologist will tell you that the sooner you start, the better your skin will look over the years to come, before any wrinkles start setting in.

That is why you should make sure to refine your skin care routine in your adolescence and early twenties, so as to slowly nourish your skin properly and prepare it to mature without early lines, pigmentation issues, or similar problems. Of course, it’s also important to care for your skin inside out and ensure its radiance by giving yourself plenty of beauty sleep and good food – no creams will ever be able to replace poor lifestyle choices.

Learn from youthful Koreans

Fascinated by the youthfulness preserved by so many women in Korea, dermatologists have picked up on the top ten steps these ladies embrace when caring for their skin. From double cleansing to utilizing highly effective serums, Korean beauty entails a set of steps that are designed to help purify your pores no matter your age.

This approach is exceptionally effective for preventing early signs of aging and ensuring ample protection from environmental damage. They are huge advocates of relying on specific, skin-friendly ingredients designed to support natural regeneration and collagen production.

Sun-proof like Aussies

As the country with one of the highest rates of skin cancer and so much sun throughout the year, it’s natural that Aussies have learned how to care for their skin all year round. Not only do they wear sunscreen all day, even when it rains and it’s overcast, but they also put on shades to protect their eyes and they wear hats for more than just making a fashion statement.

To prevent early signs of aging, dermatologists suggest we follow in their footsteps when it comes to sun protection. Make sure you find the right lotion for your skin, especially around your eyes, and give yourself a break from the sun whenever possible – hats and eyewear do help.

Special attention for eyes and lips

What you do to protect your skin matters, but you also need to be particularly careful with the more sensitive, softer skin around your eyes and lips. This is where the first signs of aging typically appear in the form of fine lines, and you can prevent and postpone the process with the right approach & a few of the best under eye cream available.

To avoid morning puffiness, but also to help your eye skin remain plump and vibrant, you should go for moisturizing, revitalizing eye creams that are suited for your skin. If you’ve chosen to take the Korean care path, then don’t forget to leverage a serum, as well, to give your thinnest skin areas some extra care and affection.

Tech can help you maintain your pores

Ever heard of derma-rolling? The somewhat novel trend has become exceptionally popular, and dermatologists recommend it for helping you boost collagen production as well as skin exfoliation. However, it’s vital to note that you need to be mindful of the proper usage and avoid overusing the tool, to prevent pigmentation issues.

The micro needles on the roller help you prevent wrinkles and minimize their appearance, and the microscopic punctures signal your skin that it’s time to regenerate your pores. It might sound invasive, but it’s far from it, which is why you can get the product and use it at home on your own, but also schedule a session in a professional salon if you want to be sure.

Nature will take its course, and we do need to embrace the beauty of aging as a completely natural process. We don’t have to succumb to environmental damage and other ways we might be harming our pores. The more precautions we take and the earlier we take them, the better our chances are for retaining that youthful glow deep into our silver years.

6 DIY Skincare Products You Can Make At Home

There are many skin conditions that can be soothed with natural products in your cupboard. Once you find the right recipes for the conditions listed below, you can soothe yourself and your loved ones without a trip to the cosmetics counter or the drug store.

1) Acne

Acne is often an indication that your skin is out of pH balance. This imbalance provides a haven for bacteria to create havoc with your skin. You may also simply produce more oil than average, or be under a great deal of stress. To get a handle on acne, mix a simple toner of equal parts apple cider vinegar and water and apply to the skin with a cotton ball.

2) Sunburn

Turn the irritation of a sunburn into an excuse for a spa day! With just a bit of almond milk, brown sugar, and aloe vera gel, you can freshen burned skin and soothe the discomfort with an aloe mask. Do make sure to mix the milk and brown sugar until the sugar dissolves completely before blending in the aloe vera gel. Let this blend sit on your skin for 15 to 20 minutes and gently remove with lukewarm water and a soft towel.

3) Oily Skin

If you are at a stage in life where your skin is producing more oil, or if you always have struggled with oily skin, put a couple of drops of olive oil in your palm and gently massage it to your face in soft circles. Try to use just your ring fingers to reduce application pressure, which could pull too much on the thin skin under the eyes. Let the oil settle for a few minutes, then gently wipe it away with a warm, wet cloth. Let your face air dry.

4) Dry Skin

It can be very frustrating to try to clean your dry skin without increasing the uncomfortable dryness. Invest in a few activated charcoal pills. Mix the contents of one capsule with a few tablespoons of plain yogurt. Mix this thoroughly to allow the charcoal to soften. Apply the mixture to your skin and massage very gently for a couple of minutes. Let the mixture sit on your skin for no more than 10 minutes, then rinse it away with lukewarm water.

If your dry skin becomes more sensitive during

● points of high stress
● dry months when the furnace is wrong
● when you’re exposed to the sun

invest in a soft microfiber towel. Keep this separate from the rest of your linens so only you use it and focus on patting your face dry enough that you can leave it to air dry. When it’s time to wash it, rinse it thoroughly and let it air dry or tumble it without dryer sheets to reduce the risk of reaction.

5) Inflammation

If you suffer from an inflammatory skin condition, consider mixing up a simple cream of black cumin seed oil and cocoa or shea butter. You can blend these with a stick blender for a bit of creaminess and fluff. Once you have the mixture at a consistency you like, add a tbsp of CBD isolate to disrupt skin inflammation. Apply on unbroken, irritated skin and allow it to soak in before adding clothing or makeup.

CBD use is extremely individualized. To start, put this product on while wearing disposable gloves if you are concerned about taking too much. It’s very rare to get too much CBD, but if you develop diarrhea you will want to dial back your dosage.

6) Scarring

If you find that acne scars are taking away from your confidence, a honey-based treatment can reduce the depth of these pits.

In a small bowl, mix 1 tsp each

● organic honey
● lemon juice
● aloe vera gel

Add 1/2 tsp each

● cinnamon powder
● nutmeg powder

and blend well. Apply to your acne scars. Let this mixture sit for no more than 25 minutes, then rinse it off with cool water and apply a simple moisturizer. You can do this 3 times a week to reduce acne scars.

Your skincare concerns may be reduced with simple products from your cupboard. If you have dumped a lot of product on your skin that didn’t work, one of the recipes above could put you in control of the situation.

6 Ways You Could Be Ruining Your Skin

I get it… Skincare is both time-consuming and expensive – not to mention the weird standard that skincare is only for women. We do all have skin, y’all. But, what if I told you that some things you’re doing (or not doing) are seriously damaging your skin? A lot of these things have cheap and easy fixes that will not only help your skin now, but down the road as you age.

1. Not moisturizing

One of the biggest misconceptions about oily skin is that moisturizers will only make it more oily. That’s false. Most likely, your skin is oily because your glands have to go into overdrive to make up for your lack of moisturizing. Imagine if you could help all of that! Let me introduce you to moisturizer. There are so many out there that will cater to whatever skin type you have – even oily. Products range anywhere from $3 to $300 – all you have to do is know your skin and take your pick.

2. Not using sunscreen

I have great news for you: most moisturizers already have sunscreen in them. So, depending on what you choose, you could be killing two birds with one stone. But, if not, you’ll need to find some product with SPF in it. It doesn’t need to be a high number, but it needs to be something. Even if it’s cloudy and rainy, sun is still hitting your face. In fact, you can’t do anything without at least a little bit of sun. This simple fix will also help protect you from sun-induced skin cancer.

3. Not removing makeup

Ladies, if you take nothing else from this, hear this: take. your. makeup. off. Yes, every night. Think about it… Most makeup has chemicals and/or unnatural elements in it. Wouldn’t you want that off your face so it doesn’t soak into your skin? Not to mention the unmatched feeling of being able to rub your face at night. Leaving makeup on for extended periods of time will clog your pores which will cause breakouts which will cause scarring… The list goes on and on. Do yourself a favor and pick up a makeup wipe before your head hits the pillow.

4. Not washing your face

Honestly, this shouldn’t even need an explanation. Imagine all the dirt and grime caking onto your skin causing plugged-up glands, crazy blemishes, long-lasting scars… Have I made my point yet? Just like you wash every other part of your body (or at least you should), you need to be washing your face. Take the extra two minutes in the morning and night to just refresh. Your face will thank you.

5. Using expired makeup

I will admit, even as a makeup artist, I am so guilty of this. We spend good money on makeup so we can use it, right? And most times we don’t use it all in time, right? That’s the price we must pay for the health of our skin. To check if your makeup has expired, look at the product packaging. There will almost always be a little picture of a makeup jar with a number in the middle somewhere on the label. That number shows how many months you can use your makeup. After that amount of time, trash the products for new ones.

6. Not washing makeup brushes and sponges

Another one I’m guilty of. It’s time-consuming to clean your makeup brushes and sponges, especially if you use a separate brush for each product (which you should). But, do you know how many germs live in overly-used makeup brushes and sponges? Trust me, the number would totally gross you out, much like it did me. Luckily, there are things you can buy that make the whole cleaning process a little easier.

Your skin is the largest organ, so you should treat it with the utmost care. Even if you just start with washing your face in the morning, that’s a step in the right direction. Solve these 6 problems and your skin will feel and look much better.

Speed Up Your Makeup Routine with These 10 Tips

Today we are talking about how to speed up the morning routine of applying makeup. It often happens that we are not even ready for work, but we all know we need to look nice and tidy when we leave the house. If you are also struggling with morning fatigue, and you do not have time or coffee to drink in peace, then it is the right time to change your routine.

Below, we share with you the best tips on how to start your day and how to speed up your morning makeup routine!

Start the day with a smile!

What is very important for the proper functioning of the body is to get some sleep. Experts say you should sleep a minimum of 7 and a maximum of 9 hours during the night. When you wake up, forget about the phone. Browsing social networks in the morning can stir your thoughts and give you many useless information. Organize your morning so that you have at least an hour to prepare for work. Drink coffee alone, in silence. It would be best to go out on the terrace or in the yard and be in the fresh air. Drink your favorite coffee that will wake you up and be sure to make a healthy breakfast before you go out. And finally, arrange yourself so that you are satisfied with yourself. Choose clothes that will be comfortable for you. The next step is facial care and makeup! Follow this guide for the perfect makeup effect that takes about ten minutes!

Tip 1 – Facial cleansing

Dermatologists claim that many skin problems occur due to improper facial cleansing. For facial cleansing, you need mild products that are in line with your skin type. You can choose gel or natural soap. Facial cleansing is mandatory during the morning and evening routine. The difference is that during the evening you take off your make-up and the dirt that has accumulated during the day. During the morning routine, you remove sebum and the remnants of the cream that you applied before going to bed. In the morning, wash with cold water, apply the gel and rub the gentle face and leave it to dry naturally. If dark circles appear on the face, take an ice cube and gently run it over the skin. Ice treatment has become very popular because it tightens the skin, improves the tone and affects the eyelids. If you have pimples on your face, we advise you to make ice cubes from tea. Green tea or chamomile can soothe the skin and provide a great effect. While you wait for the water to dry, we move on to the next step.

Tip 2 – Hydration before makeup

It is a big mistake when you apply powder on a dry face. Moisturizer is needed before applying concealer and powder. It should be light and absorb quickly. You can apply it while your face dries after washing. Apply a layer of cream and when it absorbs, apply powder. If you do not have skin imperfections that you want to cover, we advise you to choose BB or CC cream. These are tinted creams that also hydrate the skin, have good covering power and provide a fresh look. If the cream has an SPF factor, that’s a full hit! These creams can save you time and replace three products, which will mean a lot to you in the morning. For fans of classic powders, the procedure still takes a bit longer because each product must be applied correctly. Then just wait to be absorbed.

Tip 3 – Balm instead of lipstick

It takes more time to apply lipstick, but you have to take care of it throughout the day. In addition to requiring precision, applying lipstick also requires frequent repairs. This does not benefit the ladies because they have a lot of responsibilities during one day. That is why it is better to choose a lip balm on busy mornings that provides hydration and shine, and is applied in one go. You can also find colored balms, which will fit harmoniously into the overall makeup.

Tip 4 – Applying mascara

Mascara is mandatory, and it doesn’t take much time to apply it, if you are a real makeup expert! However, it is definitely a better solution to try upgraded lashes and you will always look like you have just put on professional make-up. In addition to the upgrade, there are now several other techniques that will help you avoid mascara and have long and well-groomed lashes. One of these treatments is keratin for eyelashes.

Tip 5 – Eyebrow shaping

Shaping eyebrows can really take a lot of time. Surely you are familiar with the scenario when the tip of your pencil breaks or you fail to shape your eyebrows precisely in a hurry. To prevent this from happening again, you need to find a permanent solution for eyebrows them to be always tidy. One of the most practical solutions is cosmetic eyebrow tattoos, perfectly shaped in accordance with your facial features. Once your eyebrows are trimmed, your morning makeup routine changes and you won’t need much time to tidy up.

Tip 6 – Bronzer

Bronzer is not just for summer! You can use it after applying BB or CC cream and it will define the look of your face in an instant. You can also use bronzer as an eye shadow, so that you don’t waste time choosing the shades that match your outfit. The bronzer will give you a fresh look and will easily cover skin imperfections.

Tip 7 – Is eyeliner mandatory?

Many ladies cannot imagine their makeup routine without eyeliner, but it is unnecessary in the morning. If you can’t do without it, a better solution is to use eyeliner. There are pens on the market that guarantee precise drawing and are easy to use. They are durable, and you don’t have to think about whether they will smudge during the day. Since you don’t have time to shade your eyelids in the morning, an eye pencil can be useful and functional.

Tip 8 – Loose powder

Loose powder is great if you have oily or combination skin. It will base your makeup, and you will not have to worry about sebum on your skin. Choose a neutral powder, so you don’t have to worry about a color that will combine with a tinted cream.

Tip 9 – Choose waterproof makeup during the summer

When the summer season comes and the heat sets in, we advise you to choose waterproof makeup that is ideal when the temperatures are high. In the summer months, avoid intense and heavy makeup and choose waterproof mascara and eye shadows to prevent spilling on your face during the day.

Tip 10 – Wipes to absorb excess fat on the face

When the humidity in the air is increased, sebum is often secreted on the face. If you are facing this problem during the summer, use handkerchiefs to absorb excess fat on your face. In just a few seconds, you will clean your face of sebum and will not spoil your makeup.

We believe that these tricks will help you look great in the morning and shine, with very little effort and time spent.

Lucky Heart Cosmetics – The Memphis-Based Brand You Need to Shop

Being from Nashville, TN, featuring and reviewing companies that are based near me helps bring exposure to the smaller cosmetics companies that need business. Ulta, Sephora, and other places are great, but nothing can beat the familiar feel of using products from a company that knows you on a more personal level.

Lucky Heart Cosmetics is a Memphis, Tennessee-based company that has been in business since 1935. Initially started as a cosmetics company for African Americans, the brand has branched out to include all ethnicities. All of their products are made in the United States and are proudly cruelty-free. Lucky Heart Cosmetics is currently veteran-owned and sells hair care and skincare products. The company sent me both the 4-Way Coconut Conditioner and Absolutely Lavender Hand & Body Lotion to review, and I was able to dive into what the brand has to offer.

4-Way Coconut Oil Conditioner

As advertised on the website, this product… “Coconut oil detangles your hair, helping it grow longer and stronger while vitamin E nourishes your scalp so your hair stays healthy. Use as a conditioner or a deep-cleaning mask to reveal soft and manageable hair.” Directions on the packaging instruct to use on damp hair and leave it in as you style it as usual.

The product is like a textured petroleum jelly-like feel that smells strongly of coconut. Let me emphasize: you only need a little bit. Just a pea-sized amount will go a long way. It’s important to remember that you should not apply this near your roots, as it will make your hair greasy. Instead, work the product into the ends of your hair and brush it through before styling.

One out of the two times I used the product, it made my hair very greasy, but that was because it was challenging to find the sweet spot on how much to use. But, if applied correctly, this product has the potential to bring coconutty health back into your hair.

Absolutely Lavender Hand & Body Lotion

Let me be the first to say… I have tried many, many lotions that are said to help sleep. Between Lush’s Sleepy lotion, lotions with rose, lotions with actual melatonin in it, and many more, I can say that I have finally found my holy grail – and it’s only $5.

From someone with wicked insomnia, I know how hard it can be to get a good night’s sleep – even with melatonin or another sleep aid that you may use. And, before I started trying sleepytime lotions, I had come to terms with the fact that I would forever spend my nights waiting for hours to fall asleep, just to wake up 10 times in the middle of the night before my alarm blared in my face the next morning. However, NO LONGER.

I tried this lotion for six days straight to see if I had finally found something that could help my sleep. Even from the first night, this lotion had me falling asleep in as little as eight minutes. You can’t even get through half of a podcast in that amount of time. Every night I was pleasantly surprised to find that I fell asleep quickly and stayed asleep throughout the night.

For my nightly routine, I use the lotion to moisturize my legs and my feet before massaging some lotion into my hands (since I usually sleep with my hands near my face). You can put a little bit under your nose or on your chest if that would be a better option for you and your sleep routine.

The Takeaway

Locally-owned companies will always have a special place in my heart. Maybe it’s because I owned my own business back in the day or maybe it’s because the personal feel you get with the brand is just unmatched. That being said, Lucky Heart Cosmetics has that personalized feel you love with products and prices you’ll love even more. Check them out online to find your new favorite product.

Skincare Products Under $20 That ACTUALLY Work

We’ve all been there. Our skin decides to hate us the day before a big event. Maybe a wedding, photoshoot, prom, first date… Enough to make us want to cancel and hide under the covers until it goes away. But, what if I told you there were certain products that could cut down the duration of your breakouts by days? Just call me your fairy godmother because I got the goods you’ll thank me for later.

There are certain problems that plague just about everyone in their life; dry skin, breakouts, and discoloration, to name a few. And, if you’re anything like me, you’ve experienced more than one on a very unfortunate timeline. However, there are products for common problems that will have you happy in your skin ASAP.

Dry Skin

Neutrogena Hydro Boost Water Gel – $14

This is a product I use daily right after I wash my face in the morning. It doesn’t cause breakouts, leaves your skin feeling light and bouncy, and smells fantastic. This moisturizer would still be worth it at three times the price, which shows that it’s more than worth the price point.

Maracuja Oil – $14

If you’re looking for a natural product that really works, maracuja oil is the best bet. However, this oil is more prone to breakouts if used too often which means it’s best used no more than twice a week (at least until you see how it affects your skin). To make sure that it doesn’t make your skin more oily, use a few drops at night so that it has time to soak in while you sleep.

CeraVe Skin Renewing Night Cream – $14

Although this product comes in a small container, the effects make up for it. This product is specifically for the evening. Since it is a thicker formula, use a little for a week or so to see how your skin reacts.

Face Masks

Aztec – Indian Healing Clay – $9

At first, I was more than skeptical of this face mask because it came in a powder form. However, after hearing the celebrity endorsement by both Khloe Kardashian and Mindy Kaling, I decided to give it a whirl. Mixed with either water or apple cider vinegar, this face mask is life-changing and will have your skin cleared up in no time.

Mint Julep Masque – $8

Be warned: this face mask is not for the faint of heart (or skin). If you have sensitive skin, I would pass on this mask. But, if you’re only worried about breakouts, this is the product to use. When first applied it will go on like a thick mud. As it dries, it’ll harden and become a lighter color. Make sure to time how long this mask is on your skin or it could potentially cause irritation. But, if applied correctly, this product is a miracle.

Spot Treatments

Peter Thomas Roth Acne Spot and Area Treatment – $19

In all my years searching for acne spot treatments, this is by far the best product for sensitive skin that I’ve come across. A little pricier than drug store brands, Peter Thomas Roth created a treatment that has 5% Colloidal Sulfur, 4% Glycolic Acid Complex, Aloe Vera, and other good stuff. But $19 is still nothing compared to other spot treatments that do the opposite of what they advertise. Before you assume it’s harsh on the skin, it’s not! Add a dab to a pimple or blemish that you have and let it dry overnight. And the best part: it doesn’t dry out your skin.

CVS Health Acne Spot Treatment Maximum Strength – $8

If you’re looking for the cheapest product that will get rid of your acne, this is the one for you. However, this product will dry out your skin. In that case, make sure to wash it off instead of letting it dry overnight. But, for the price point, the product will have you pimple-free in no time.

De La Cruz Sulfur Acne Treatment – $7

This product, much like the mint julep mask, comes with a self-given skin sensitivity disclaimer. This is another product that you need to time when it’s on your face. Unlike the two treatments above, this product zaps pimples, specifically cystic and hormonal, right where it is. Although this product does dry out your skin if left on too long, that’s the point. So, after your treat your skin with this, use a moisturizer (like maracuja oil) to protect your skin from the dryness you might get. I would recommend using this product in the evening so that the product doesn’t interact with other cosmetics.

Pimples, breakouts, sensitive skin, oily skin, hyperpigmentation, dry patches, and more don’t have to be a part of your everyday. With these products (and, of course, recommendations from a dermatologist), you’ll be able to see that fix for the annoying problems that you face with your skin. As always, remember to patch test before full application. Happy skincare!

How to Declutter & Revamp Your Beauty Products for the Spring Season

Decluttering your kitchen pantries, revamping your wardrobe, and organizing your spaces is a normal way to kick start your spring season. But, you know what’s not traditionally part of a spring cleaning checklist? Your beauty stash.

In the same way that most foods and liquids expire, so does your beauty stash. But, unlike the expiration label that is typically listed on these products, determining the shelf-life of your cosmetics isn’t something you can easily figure out.

This is because the majority of beauty products do not come listed with a specific expiration date. Instead, the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) requires manufacturers to have a batching code or period after opening (PAO) symbol to be listed on the packaging or labeling of their products as a means of expiration indication for consumers. Unfortunately, this regulation makes it all the more difficult to pinpoint the shelf-life of an item. Therefore, causing many of us to use expired makeup and skincare.

When’s the last time you gave your beauty stash some shelf-love? If the answer to this question remains unclear, chances are, your products are expired and in need of an upgrade. But, don’t worry, you’ve come to the right spot!

To learn how to declutter and revamp your beauty products for the spring season, there are three main questions you’ll want to answer:

Are there visible indications of expiration?

First and foremost, products that have passed their prime lose their efficacy over time. When this happens, the ingredients formulated within the product are no longer equipped to work as they were originally intended, meaning your skin is no longer being protected or treated correctly.

Regardless if you have or have not opened a beauty product, the loss of efficacy will inevitably occur over time. Be on the lookout for visible changes in the formula and note any differences in the color or separation of product as these are both indicators of an expired product. This is extremely important for those of you who’re currently using a specialized treatment product that contains an active ingredient as these tend to lose their potency much faster than those without.

Especially if left exposed to oxygen, certain treatment products that contain active ingredients like retinol are quick to become increasingly unstable. That being said, if you notice that your wrinkle-fighting retinol treatment is no longer producing the desired results and/or the formula looks visibly different to you, it’s probably safe to assume it’s reached its shelf life. Be sure to toss out the old product and replace it with a new anti-aging cream for spring.

Does the product negatively affect my skin?

On account of the fact that expired products lose their efficacy once they’ve reached their shelf life, it’s no wonder why continuous use of them can worsen skin conditions. The loss of efficacy causes the preservatives within the item to lose their quality as well, which makes it easy for microorganisms to proliferate rapidly.

As a result, your expired beauty stash then becomes a breeding ground for harmful bacteria. Consequently, by transferring the bacteria-infused product onto your complexion, your skin is more likely to experience a negative reaction. Whether it be redness, dryness, inflammation, or the development of acne breakouts, irritation and worsened skin conditions are bound to occur.

Make no mistake, even if the product you’re using isn’t causing a negative reaction, it doesn’t necessarily mean it hasn’t expired. Some cosmetics can have different effects on the body which can naturally lead to adverse results.

However, this doesn’t change the fact that your supplies may still be expired. That’s why it’s critical to keep track of other visible signs of expiration and mark down the dates in which you first try a new product as this will allow you to accurately measure the number of months you used it for after initially opening it. Or, use this cosmetic calculator to frequently check the shelf-life of your beauty products.

Does the product apply unevenly?

Another tell-tale sign of expired beauty products is when they no longer apply the way they used to. This is usually most noticeable when using a skin tint or another makeup item containing pigment as this allows consumers to visibly see that a product is no longer providing good coverage and is applying unevenly across the surface of the skin.

As previously stated, not all expired products will cause an adverse reaction. Depending on the cosmetic item you’re using, and the ingredients formulated within it, developmental skin concerns may not be the issue that comes from using it. For instance, applying mascara to your eyelashes after it’s reached its shelf-life will more often than not lead to an eye infection.

On the other hand, applying an expired face powder to your skin won’t necessarily cause an adverse reaction, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t infested with excessive microorganisms that are harmful to your skin. Rather than experiencing a particular skin concern or condition, it may cause other issues to arise, such as an uneven application of the product. If you notice your face powder has a change in texture and is starting to apply patchy, streaky, or even cakey on your skin, chances are, this product is past its prime.

Beauty products expire faster than you think

Your beauty products expire faster than you think. So this spring, it’s out with the old and in with the new!

As you prepare for the spring season, remember to consider the three main questions listed above as these will help guide you on which products are still good, and which are expired and need to be thrown away.

Once you have answers to these questions, you should then spend some time going through your beauty stash. And then get rid of any makeup or skincare products that are expired. In their place, treat yourself to some brand new cosmetic products that are suitable to use on your unique skin.
