5 Tips To Save Your Skin This Summer

Summer is the time of sunshine, warm weather, and swimming. However, it’s also the time of sunburn, sweat, and chlorine.

If you’re anything like me, you live for the few months of summer when you can wear tank tops, bask in the sun, and have days by the water. However, as a makeup artist and skincare enthusiast, I know that summer is one of the most brutal times for your skin. But, there are things you can do to save the skin you’re in, while still enjoying the dog days of summer.

1. Use Sunscreen

If you take nothing else from this article, take this: USE. SUNSCREEN. It is estimated that one in five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime. That’s a pretty big chance of something that I’m sure none of us want to develop. Thankfully, skincare brands and even sunscreen brands are all over it. An example is Spot My UV detection stickers which tell you when it is time to reapply sunscreen.

It’s hard to find a skincare product that doesn’t already have SPF in it, including primers, moisturizers, lotions, foundations, etc. In my opinion, that’s worth spending a few extra dollars on so that you can “set it and forget it.” However, if you are looking for just a sunscreen instead of a makeup product, Neutrogena created products that are safe for your skin – including a specifically breakout-free sunscreen lotion for us who have acne-prone skin. Trust me – if you can do something so simple to help protect yourself from something so serious, do it.

2. Moisturize

A common misconception of skincare is that if you’re producing oil on your skin (specifically your face), you don’t need moisturizer. Let me squash that lie right now. If you have oily skin, that means your body doesn’t produce enough moisture so it’s working overtime to develop what you don’t have enough of. Using a moisturizer will save your skin – yes, even in sweaty weather. Honestly, especially in sweaty weather.

Moisturizer should be a part of everyone’s skincare routine, no matter their skin type. This is especially true when you’re skin may be taking in some extra sunshine. To keep your skin in check, moisturize at least once a day – right after you wash your face. For my makeup-wearing people, this should be twice a day: once in the morning and once at night after you take your makeup off.

3. Cooling Spray

I live in the south which means brutal heat and humidity. Hello 100° weather, hello sweat… The elephant in the room that no one wants to talk about. But I have news for you: everyone sweats. However, that doesn’t mean you have to really suffer through it. Let’s all thank the skincare gods that they’ve come up with an easy fix.

I’ve always been an advocate for Mario Badescu products. Although some may be a little pricey, I have yet to encounter one that doesn’t do what it says. Their facial refreshing sprays are no different. Like a good skincare brand should do, they’ve produced several different sprays for different skin types and skin concerns:

  1. Aloe, herbs, and rose water
  2. Aloe, cucumber, and green tea
  3. Aloe, chamomile, and lavender
  4. Aloe, sage, and orange blossom

All with stellar reviews, these sprays may just be the cooling sensation you need in the dead heat and humidity of summer.

4. Check the UV Index

The Ultraviolet Index (UV index) is a measurement created in the 90s used to find the strength of sunburn-producing ultraviolet radiation. Don’t let the word radiation scare you. In simpler (and less scary) terms, it’s the unit of measurement to see how intense the sun’s rays are. The scale is color-coded and number-coded and goes from 1-11+. The lower the number, the lower the exposure.

The lower the number, the “safer” it is to be out in the sun since there’s less sun exposure. Before you go out and tan, check your local UV index to see how long you can safely spend outside, what the recommended SPF is, etc.

5. Hydrate

Let’s be honest, we all should probably be doing this a lot more than we currently do. However, this is especially pertinent in the summertime. Drinking water is said to help clear up your skin – and trust me, it really does. Especially if you use sunscreen you don’t normally use, water is essential to keep your skin in tip-top shape.

Hydration is also essential when it comes to combatting heatstroke or other side effects caused by sun exposure. Of course, other help for heatstroke is cold water exposure (pools, ice baths, cold showers), rest, a colder environment… It may take away from your sun time, but it’s worth it to keep your body’s equilibrium in check.

Summertime can be relaxing, fun, exciting, and anything else you want it to be. In using these five tips, you can help to make sure your skin has the same amount of fun you do.

Vacation, All I Never Wanted: Why Beach Trips Are Overrated

Confession: I don’t love the beach.

Don’t get me wrong. Once in a while, chilling out with an alcoholic beverage, a magazine, and a developing sunburn is a great way to unwind. That said, I’ve never been able to understand people who get excited over the prospect of spending an entire vacation at the beach. They seem to talk about lying in the sun and doing nothing for days on end as if this is somehow a good thing.

Quite honestly, I don’t get it. I’m one of those people who thinks that beach vacations are terribly overrated. And that’s because. . .

You Don’t Do Much

I understand that the beach is not utterly devoid of opportunities for fun. You can play volleyball, learn to surf, get eaten by a shark. . .there are many ways in which to get your thrills.

That said, it doesn’t seem as though most people who enjoy beach vacations participate in these types of activities. As far as they are concerned, aside from a few minutes spent in the water, most of the time is dedicated to sitting in the sun and, well, that’s about it.

A vacation should be an opportunity to, for a few days out of the year, do something that isn’t related to your job. Relaxing isn’t doing something. I can relax just fine in my own bed, because I’m old enough to purchase wine and smart enough to drink it often.

When I go on vacation, I want to go to a museum, or climb a mountain, or pay too much money for wine at a bar that sounded nice in the travel guide. The point is, I don’t want to waste my time. I want to make the most of it. I find that hard to do at the beach.

In fact. . .

The Beach Is Kind Of Annoying

For all the talk about the beach being the epitome of a stress-free environment, I’ve never found that to be the case. Simply setting up for the day is a trial. You have to apply sunblock, pack up your belongings, scout out an open space, pitch your tent, lay your towels down, and try not to get sand in, just, everything.

You will fail. That sand will ruin your life. It will not bow down to your will. You will have spent an hour trying to set up a nice spot in which to relax, knowing that your efforts are in vain.

Quite simply, the beach may be regarded as a relaxing place, but I find it to be the exact opposite. It’s uncomfortable, it’s stressful, and at best, it’s boring. I don’t want to waste my hard-earned vacation days on the privilege of sitting in a giant sandbox.

It’s Unoriginal

No one is surprised when someone announces that they spent their vacation at the beach. That’s like admitting that you put a tree in your house around Christmas. It’s inconvenient, unnecessary, and not all that enjoyable, but everyone does it.

Your vacation is a chance to indulge yourself in a way that you don’t get to throughout the year. Most days, you get a few brief moments to yourself, small glimpses of a chance to reconnect with your soul before another Excel sheet swallows it whole again.

Why take the easy route and go to the beach, when that’s what everyone else will be doing? Why not figure out what’s truly important to you? A music festival. Hiking the Appalachian Trail. Visiting wine country (followed by Hangover City, naturally).

Or, yes, fine, going to the beach, if that’s really, truly your thing. I suppose.

It’s Repetitive

Again, I should stress that when you’re at the beach, you do indeed have the chance to learn new skills. You can take up surfing, scuba diving, or shark-hunting.

(I watched Jaws way too often as a child.)

That said, if you’re going to abstain from these activities – and, it seems that most people do – you’re going to be left with a very, very boring day. There’s only so much you can do at the beach, and maybe it’s the ADD in me talking, but I’ve always felt that a vacation should be as packed full of fun as possible. It may not be as relaxing as you’d like, but time spent in a city trying to eat new foods and find cool bars and see interesting art exhibits and hike beautiful trails and visit stimulating museums and enjoy entertaining performances. . .well, that time is more rewarding than simply chilling by the ocean.

Obviously, this is all just a personal preference. If you enjoy the beach, good for you. Go have fun. However, do not, I repeat, DO NOT go in the water.

I think there are sharks there.
