7 Popular Movie and TV Filming Locations to Visit

What is it that makes stories immersive? Is it the plot? The characters? Or is it the setting that gives movies and TV shows that touch of magic?

No matter your answer to the question, you’ll agree that there’s something special about seeing those famous filming locations in real life. And thanks to the fact that traveling nowadays is easier (and more affordable) than ever, your dreams of getting to see King’s Landing from Game of Thrones or the Ben Rose House from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off can finally come true.

So, if you’ve already toured the movie lots and done your online research, here are the most exciting movie and TV filming locations to visit on your next adventure.

King’s Cross Station

Even though you may not have received your Hogwarts acceptance letter (yet), that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try to go and catch the Hogwarts Express.

Between platforms 9 and 10 of this famous 19th-century train station, you’ll find the secret passage to Platform 9¾, where you can take a photo in your house colors. Or, if you’re still shopping for school supplies, visit the gift shop that looks just like Ollivander’s, where you’ll find robes, school jumpers, wands, and additional must-haves like Horcruxes (just in case, right?)

Griffith Observatory

Looking for the perfect date spot? Why not emulate Mia and Sebastian from La La Land and visit the Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles?

It’s a great place to visit, and you can take your pick of activities — regardless of whether you’d prefer to observe the night sky, explore exhibits, attend a lecture, or get a front-row seat to pose with the Hollywood sign.

Vatican City

Are you more of a culture and history aficionado? In that case, the best movie filming location for you to visit is Vatican City, the setting for the blockbuster hit Angels & Demons.

This UNESCO historical heritage site dates back to Ancient Roman times (the famous Vatican Obelisk was brought from Egypt by Caligula in 40 AD), while the Sistine Chapel, St. Peter’s Basilica, and the Vatican Museums date to the 14th, 15th, and 16th century.

Vatican City is well worth a visit if you’re a Dan Brown fan, are interested in seeing some of the world’s most impressive Renaissance artworks, or if you simply want to see what one of the world’s most prominent noble families (the Borgias) lived like half a millennium ago.

San Domenico Palace

Are you obsessed with the resort aesthetic (and possibly the juicy drama) featured in season 2 of the White Lotus? In that case, you’ll be happy to hear that you can visit the dreamy resort in Taormina, Sicily.

The San Domenico Palace is a Four Seasons Hotel that may set you back north of $3,000 per night during the high season. Nonetheless, if you’re willing to treat yourself, then it’s absolutely a TV-inspired destination you should consider.

Of course, if you’re on a budget, there are always ways to save a bit of money when booking a holiday. From knowing where to book cheap flights to staying at an Airbnb instead of a luxury hotel, rest assured that you can fulfill all your Italian summer dreams, even if you don’t have those movie-level, endlessly deep pockets.

Angkor Thom

Are you an adventure lover, gamer, or fan of the Tomb Raider franchise? In that case, you’ll definitely want to add a visit to Angkor Thom to your bucket list.

Established in the 12th century as the capital of the Khmer Empire, the Great Angkor City served as the residence of royalty and kingdom officials, featuring multiple temples and impressive statues. Today, the abandoned site has blended in with nature, making for a spectacular movie filming location and an even more breathtaking place to visit on your trip through Southeast Asia.

Matamata

When Peter Jackson started preparing to film the Lord of the Rings trilogy, he knew that creating an out-of-this-world experience would be essential for getting viewers to immerse themselves in Tolkien’s fictional world. And, boy, did he succeed.

When his team designed the Hobbiton movie set in Matamata, New Zealand, they created a location that would not only look breathtaking on screen but which would attract tourists for years to come.

Today, you can tour the set, book a Second Breakfast experience, or even visit during one of the festivals or the Halfling Marathon for a unique opportunity to feel like a Hobbit (or wizard) bound for their next adventure.

Al-Khazneh

Finally, if you’re looking for a once-in-a-lifetime movie-inspired adventure, consider paying a visit to the Al-Khazneh temple in Petra, Jordan. As the setting of the 1989 Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade blockbuster, this UNESCO World Heritage site has been attracting travelers from all around the world.

Historically, the temple was carved and sculpted into the surrounding cliff in the 1st century AD. Unfortunately, it’s in a state of erosion — and not just due to the 2,000 years that have passed since it was built. According to conservationists, the site is experiencing damage due to a large number of tourists and humidity, pointing out just how important sustainable tourism practices are if we want to preserve the world’s wonders for future generations to enjoy.

Final Thoughts

There you have it, our top suggestions for which popular movie and TV filming locations you should visit on your next holiday.

Whether you prefer to spend your summers on the Continent, want to enjoy a once-in-a-lifetime adventure in Southeast Asia, or are looking for places to visit that are close to home, you’re sure to see some breathtaking sights, have a restful break, and (at least partially) satisfy your wanderlust.

Six Must-Watch Shows for Game of Thrones Fans

Game of Thrones proved to be a massive critical and viewer success, drawing in 10s of millions of viewers for its final season. And, while the finale did have its critics, fans of the show were left wanting more. Fortunately, thanks to the plethora of streaming and on-demand services, there is a wealth of old and new shows that can fill the Westeros-shaped hole that was left in our lives following the show’s final airing in 2019.

1) House of the Dragon

House of the Dragon is the obvious choice as a replacement for your weekly Game of Thrones viewing. This spin-off takes place 200 years before the events in Thrones and is based on George R.R. Martin’s book Fire & Blood. There are dragons and familiar locations including King’s Landing, so the series will feel familiar to Game of Thrones fans. However, the Targaryen family tree can be tricky to figure out due to the sheer number of characters, which ExpressVPN has illustrated in great detail, so it’s worth checking out these illustrated guides to see how it relates to Game of Thrones as that is set roughly 200 years in the future.

2) Vikings

If you’re looking for big action scenes set against a gritty backdrop, the Vikings series from the History Channel offers all of that and more. It is loosely based around the legend of Ragnar Lothbrok and, while it doesn’t feature dragons, it has a similar feel that Game of Thrones fans will enjoy.

3) His Dark Materials

Fans of the fantasy genre should enjoy His Dark Materials, which is based on the novels of the same name by Philip Pullman. It has multiple universes, a cast that includes James McAvoy, and familiars, which are essentially talking animal companions. There are currently two series and a third series has been announced by the BBC and will air on HBO.

4) Rings of Power

One of the reasons that Game of Thrones became so successful, and spawned a number of spin-offs, is George R.R. Martin’s incredible world-building literary skills. You would be hard-pressed to find any larger or more fantastical world than Middle Earth: the setting for the Lord of the Rings movies and the Amazon Exclusive Rings of Power.

5) The Sandman

The Sandman is another fantastical adaptation, this time based on a series of graphic novels by author Neil Gaiman and published by DC Comics. Launched on Netflix, the series is quite dark but has some very hard fantasy elements to it.

6) The Witcher

The Witcher is a Netflix show that is based on graphic novels of the same name, which themselves were used as the source material for the massively popular Witcher games. The Witcher features Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia, although he has recently announced that he is stepping down from the role, as per IGN. Liam Hemsworth is set to take over the role.

There are reported to be several new shows from the Game of Thrones world hitting screens over the next few years. In the meantime, the shows above should provide some relief and provide similar entertainment, whether you are looking for huge fantasy worlds or series based on fantasy novels.

‘Love Island’ – The Smash Summer Reality Dating Show

Love Island USA began a couple of years ago as a branch off of Love Island in the UK. This franchise has also branched out into Australia and other places. It may seem like just another trashy reality show (and it kinda is), but this isn’t your typical Bachelor in Paradise vibes. However, much like other shows like it, you’ll be hooked on this one, too.

As a quick summary, Love Island is: “The sizzling summer series based on the international smash hit and cultural phenomenon. The matchmaking begins as a group of single “Islanders” come together in a stunning villa in Las Vegas, ready to embark on a summer of dating, romance, and ultimately, relationships. Every few days the Islanders pair up and those who are not coupled are at risk of being dumped from the island. Islanders are on the lookout for romance, but the road to love doesn’t always run smoothly. Challenges abound with intriguing new Islander arrivals and dramatic twists as friendships and relationships form. In addition to choosing their partners wisely, Islanders must also win the hearts of viewers who have the opportunity to shape events on screen and ultimately crown one lucky couple the winner who will then have the chance to walk away with both love and the cash prize.

What’s cool about this show is that it’s taped in semi-live time.

Unlike The Bachelor franchise that’s taped months before the air date, Love Island is only taped a few days ahead of air time. This is because there are times when viewers get to vote people off, vote for dates, vote for breakups and makeups… It’s cool to be able to know that your decisions are actually making a difference during the show.

Not only that, but the contestants change up very frequently.

…Hence the whole idea of coupling up with someone. There are new people entering the villa and others want to get to know them to see if they have a connection. That’s why it’s important to see new contestants and old contestants are coming and going so often.

Not to mention the duration of time that the show actually runs for…

Again, unlike The Bachelor franchise which lasts several months, Love Island only lasts for EIGHT WEEKS and it’s only once a year. In turn, you can expect new episodes at least three times a week, and sometimes even more often than that. This can give you an actual realistic watch time instead of setting aside several months-worth of evenings to watch The Bachelor.

The Love Island fandom is expanding quickly.

When the US version of the show first aired two years ago, people on social media were hesitant to really jump in because they really knew nothing about it. However, as the show progressed, people on socials starting becoming very active (Twitter live-tweeting especially). On any evening the show is airing, you’re guaranteed to see a flood of people ready to give their unfiltered opinions.

It’s not like any other trashy dating show.

Yes, it still has its guilty pleasure aspect, but the main focus of the show is not necessarily to find love (contrary to what the title says). In reality, the main prize at the end is a load of money. The Bachelor and Bachelorette ends with an expensive diamond ring and Love Island ends with an expensive check for probably around the same amount.

Although we’re already roughly halfway through season three, there’s no reason you can’t binge the episodes and catch up. Check your local TV provider to see how you can watch, or do your research and get ready for next year’s season.

How The Show “You” Sheds Light on Unhealthy Relationships

“You,” a book-turned-TV series, has quickly become a favorite Netflix thriller. Originally created by Caroline Kepnes, the TV show adaptation stars Penn Badgley, Elizabeth Lail, Shay Mitchell, John Stamos, and many other iconic actors. The many plotlines are expertly portrayed and surround real-life issues. Things like drug use, abuse, codependent relationships, sexual harassment, and grief and loss make up a good number of the plots created.

When it comes to abusive relationships, “You” covers many versions of abuse. The main character, Joe Goldberg, is connected to other characters dealing with physical, emotional, and mental abuse. One, in particular, is the relationship between his neighbors Ron and Claudia, and their young son, Paco.

This relationship perfectly encompasses what it’s like being stuck in an intensely abusive relationship where a person is too fearful to leave.

Having been in a situation like this, myself, I was able to relate (to an extent) to Claudia. She is in a relationship with an abusive, alcoholic man named Ron. He provides financial stability for the family which is why Claudia feels like she can never leave the relationship. Despite being abused, she’s afraid that if she leaves Ron, she’ll lose custody of her son. It is later shown that Claudia is an addict and uses after Ron is abusive.

Let’s get this straight: no matter the situation, getting out of a relationship like this is the hardest, yet healthiest move a person can make.

How often can we relate or know someone who can relate to this? Unfortunately, more than we’d like. Not only does Claudia suffer, but Paco suffers, as well. Not even in his teens yet, Paco is forced to live with the abuse that his mom lives with. We get to know Paco when we see him sitting outside his door while Ron and Claudia scream at each other. Joe finds him after he gets home from work and takes him under his wing by giving him food and books to help him through. In that sense, we can find ourselves falling in love with that side of Joe.

Not only does the show portray a person trapped in abuse, it shows how it affects others that are indirectly affected, as well.

Another unhealthy relationship shown is that of two other characters: Beck and Peach Salinger. Beck is the main character that Joe falls in love with, and Peach Salinger is a daughter of an old-money-rich founding family in the area. Peach has everything in life… Money, fame, social status. But she is also in love with Beck, which is a no-no in her family.

Thus begins the abusive relationship between the two women.

Peach needs to get attention from Beck by any means necessary which means spoiling her with things like trips to Paris, expensive clothes, and lavish parties. She even loans Beck money when she needs it. At first glance, these seem like great things.

However, the thought and emotion behind them reek of toxic codependency.

As the story progresses, Joe tries to shed light on the issues that he sees in Peach that Beck doesn’t… Like how Peach stores hundreds of pictures of Beck on her laptop, follows her around, watches her bathe, and many other privacy-violating things. When Peach doesn’t get the attention from Beck that she needs, she’d fake illnesses and phony suicide attempts.

Let’s get another thing straight: faking these types of things to get attention is point-blank unacceptable.

Another abusive relationship in “You” is the relationship between Joe and his ex-girlfriend, Candace. Candace was an ex that cheated on Joe and then mysteriously disappeared after he found out. There are people who assume that Candace is dead, specifically that Joe killed her. We see at the end of season one and through season two that she is very much alive and has come to make Joe’s life hell.

Talk about a toxic ex.

The fact that Candace is out for blood – quite literally – shows just how harmful revenge in a past relationship can be. If broken up in a healthy way, a person should not feel the need for revenge, let alone let it totally dictate their life.

Finally, we have one of the most toxic relationships of all: Joe and his father figure.

Although we don’t necessarily see this in the first season, the second season of the show talks about Joe’s childhood and the mess that it was. He had abusive and neglectful parents and ended up in the care of Mr. Mooney, the man who ran the bookstore before Joe. We see flashbacks in Joe’s mind of his childhood, starting with the physical and emotional abuse that Mr. Mooney showed Joe.

He locked him in a glass box as punishment which is where all of Joe’s craziness got its beginning.

Because of Mr. Mooney, Joe has the glass box that he then kills people in. He was conditioned, in a way, to think and act the way that he does because that’s all he knew. Imagine someone in a parental figure teaching you these things and even punishing you with them? Daddy and mommy dearest aren’t in the picture and never have been.

In the end, “You” expertly portrays the flaws that relationships can hold.

This isn’t to say that the show normalizes it, because it doesn’t. What it does is show these qualities in ways that we are unfortunately able to understand and even relate to. It even sheds light on how often this happens all around us.

10 Arrested Development Moments That Made Us Love the Bluths

If you’ve watched Arrested Development, you’ve seen the too-relatable family moments from the Bluth family. From arguments to critical parents to sibling rivalry, the Bluth’s have shown us that they’re like every other family – except there’s also a dad who committed treason, a father and a son both liking the same girl without knowing it, and a surprisingly-successful banana stand.

Arrested Development is laid out like a documentary, which is shown more during the last season or so. Much like The Office, there is no laughing track and the characters are much more casual on camera.

In that sense, the show is already leaps and bounds ahead of other sitcoms, if that’s the vibe you’re going for.

The show is TV14 for some language and innuendos here and there. That being said, it’s family-friendly for teens and up – which seems hard to find with truly hilarious comedies nowadays. It’s binge-worthy, good to have on in the background, and funny in a sometimes unfortunately-relatable sense.

It makes it seem like our “crazy” family might not be so crazy after all.

The show is available to stream with Netflix and Hulu subscriptions and is available to purchase on Vudu, Amazon Prime, and other online options. Whatever the price – I’ll tell you that it’s worth it. Arrested Development is the type of show that will have you crying laughing even after a 14-time watch through.

1. George started the 6 feet apart rule before COVID-19.

2. Their dancing may just be worse than ours.

3. They remind us that dating can be messy.

4. They (sometimes) admit their faults.

5. They understand that not everyone can be a good cook.

6. They go through bad self-esteem moments, too.

7. Dramatics can get the best of them.

8. Their poor financial skills and a little too relatable.

9. They can get caught in awkward moments.

10. Their depressed moments can get the best of them.

20 Things You Only Understand If You Love Spending Time Alone

There are two kinds of people in this world—those who love to be surrounded by people all of the time, whether they are out, home, or on the go, and those who love being alone in their silence, solitude, and bed. Not to say that one person is better than the other, but they are total polar opposites. Some people love human contact, others despise it. And, there are just somethings you totally understand if you’re a “me, myself, and I” person.

1. Being alone means there is absolutely zero judgment at all. Zero. None. Negative none.

2. You can walk around without pants on and not have to worry about a damn thing.

3. You can eat whatever you want, at any time of day, and have no one to tell you otherwise. Ice cream for breakfast? Bring on the damn sprinkles.

4. You have a list of excuses that you run through on a regular basis to get out of plans with people you really don’t want to do—like, your mom needs help moving, your sister needs you to babysit the kids, your super is coming to fix the kitchen sink.

5. Ordering food for one is way cheaper than ordering for two-three and having to figure out how to split the Seamless/Postmates bill.

6. You know vegging out on the couch with your show to binge watch with some wine is way better than having to go to a club and rub up against sweaty and annoying strangers who keep touching you without your permission.

7. There is no pleasure quite like lighting a candle in your bedroom and snuggling under the covers with a good book.

8. Relationships are hard to get into because your personal time is more precious than anything else you can imagine.

9. And, the worst thing you can deal with is dating someone who wants to be with you or see you on an everyday basis. No thank you.

10. You don’t understand why people feel the need to text all day, every day. Having time away from the rest of the world is special.

11. People think that you’re a weirdo or a loner because you’re not always out doing something with other people.

12. But, in reality, you are constantly doing something—just solo.

13. Traveling alone is one of your all-time dreams. And, you have no problem going to a new country all by yourself.

14. You think that people who need to go with someone everywhere (including running errands, or going to the hair salon, or even traveling) are crazy and dependent.

15. People always say you’re the most independent person they’ve ever met.

16. You always people-watch and study body language when you’re out, thinking about their stories and where they come from.

17. You don’t understand why people hate eating by themselves.

18. People never worry about you if they haven’t heard from you in a while because they know you’re always around, just under the radar.

19. The only person you’d ever consider spending your life with is someone who is just as independent as you are because you cannot imagine having to do everything with someone else tied to your side all of the time.

20. You wouldn’t trade your alone time in for anything in the world—except, maybe, a million dollars.

25 Insane Thoughts Every Single Girl Has While Watching ‘The Bachelor’

Hate it or love it, I bet you know at least 5 of your friends that are obsessed with The Bachelor. While you may think the show is fake, staged, and a bit of a pathetic excuse for entertainment, there are millions of people around the world who tune in every Monday to see who will get that very special, very sweet red rose. And, while some watch it for the drama, and some watch it for the love, and some watch it to be able to discuss what happened with their co-workers the next day. Either way—no matter why you watch—we all know that you have the same damn thoughts when you watch.

1. Monday means one thing: wine, dine, Bachelor-time.

2. I wonder if they’ll actually cast some women who aren’t blonde and tan this season.

3. Wow, this chick’s entrance was so basic. We get it, you like to suck d*ck—pout your lips less.

4. I wonder what my entrance would be if I was going to walk out of a limo.

5. Why does every girl’s dress look like they shopped for the prom while blindfolded?

6. Oh, she’s definitely going to be the “she-devil” this season. I like her.

7. That girl is out on night one. Too “My Little Pony.” NEXT.

8. I hope the first date is on the beach. *TAKE OFF YOUR SHIRT! TAKE IT ALL OFF*

9. Chris, my love, get off the camera, I need more tea.

10. When a girl says she “isn’t crazy,” RUN, she’s crazier than crazy.

11. I wonder if they sleep together off-camera.

12. Actually, I wonder how many girls actually sleep with him before the season ends.

13. They definitely all f*ck.

14. I hope they’re using protection.

15. UGH, CRY ME A RIVER, YOU DIDN’T GET A ONE-ON-ONE DATE.

16. Do women prep for this show for months? Why is she so skinny?

17. *Looks in the mirror* I need to lose weight.

18. Do they have someone come in and do their hair and makeup too? Definitely.

19. I wonder how awkward it must be for people from your hometown to see you coming on a Bachelor plane with a guy you’re literally competing for.

20. Why do men still ask fathers for permission to love their daughters? It’s 2019. Stop this.

21. He better not choose Ashley.

22. He better not choose Ashley.

23. You know what, CHOOSE ASHLEY. I NEED THE DRAMA.

24. I’m going to go on this show and literally cause a scene. Go down in history as “THAT girl.”

25. I cannot wait until next week.

This ‘Bird Box’ Theory About Mental Health Actually Makes A Lot Of Sense

Unless you’re living under a rock, I’m sure you’ve heard about the latest movie to sweep social media, creating a new world of memes, jokes, and theories—Bird Box. The Netflix original film starring Sandra Bullock is about a monster that no one can “see,” because if they see it, they die. The film, therefore, has many people living their lives blindfolded to avoid the monster. Bullock and her children go on a journey to find safety, taking the entire trip blindfolded. Many people online have begun obsessing over the thriller and even trying to do the Bird Box challenge, where they complete tasks blindfolded.

But, while many have been fangirling over the movie, some may have missed the bigger picture and deeper message. According to one Twitter thread, that makes a lot of sense, the film has a huge underlying message about mental health and mental illnesses. Twitter user @alisonpool_ shared the theory online and since posting, it has gone viral across the network.

She claims that the monster in the film represents a personified version of “mental illness,” stating the monster makes you “hear voices” and commit suicide.

She also points out that the characters interact with many different symptoms of mental illnesses.

She pointed out that the point of having individuals blindfolded is to prove that mental illnesses have no “face” and can affect anybody.

She also shared specific scenes that prove the theory true.

Many people on Twitter agreed that the theory seemed super on point and that it was woke AF.
