Planning a Spring Road Trip: 6 Tips to Keep in Mind

Between inflation and lingering pandemic fears, you might not feel like boarding a plane or have the spare ticket cash. However, vacations are necessary for your body and mind. You become an unproductive zombie going through the motions each day if you skip them year after year.

Why not load up the family truckster and seek adventure on America’s highways and byways? Here are five tips to keep in mind when planning your spring road trip.

Prep Your Vehicle

When was the last time you took your car to the shop for inspection? Some states don’t require it, but a breakdown can throw a big-time wrench in your fun. At the very least, change the oil if it’s been a while. Neglecting to do so causes heat damage, eventually leading to complete engine failure if you aren’t careful.

Tend to your car’s interior, too. Springtime sunshine feels heavenly on your skin, but its harmful UV rays fade your leather, leading to cracks and rips. Do you want a quick and easy fix? Invest in a windshield cover that blocks the sun from entering your vehicle, doing double-duty by keeping you cooler on hot days.

Pro-tip: Carry maintenance essentials in your vehicle. At the very least, you should have triangles, flares and a jack for changing a flat tire. You could also include a small tool bag if you’re handy enough to perform relatively easy tasks like swapping out the radiator on an old Jeep CJ. Check with your insurance before you leave about your roadside assistance coverage — bump it up or join a club like Triple-A for maximum peace of mind.

Pack the Essentials

Road trips can get costly if you forget things and have to buy them along the way — especially with today’s inflation. Here’s a shortlist of what to include in your spring road trip go-bag:

● Mix and match clothes: Two or three shirts with one dressy bottom and one casual keep it light.
● Extra underwear and socks: Take some heavy socks if car temperature wars leave your flip-flop-clad feet shivering.
● Prescription and OTC medications
● Any assistive devices — including your glasses, contacts and solution
● Electronic devices and chargers: Include your Airpods and peripheral devices, such as extra lenses for professional cameras.
● Hygiene supplies: A few areas still have COVID-19 restrictions in effect. To be honest, you should always carry sanitizer and it doesn’t hurt to have a mask or two for entering crowded areas.
● Water and snacks: Food prices continue to soar and restaurants raise theirs to compensate. Save cash and eat healthier by stocking up on trail mix and other healthy snacks you feel good giving your kids.
● Blankets, toys and comfort items: A blanket can be your best friend if you break down on a chilly desert highway at night. Your kids need something to soothe them, too — perhaps their favorite plush toy?

Choose Your Destinations

You could hit the road and let the wind dictate your direction. However, safety rules say you should chart a course, leaving a copy of your “flight plan” with someone on the home front. The chances of something happening are slim, but it’s comforting for folks to know where to look if you don’t arrive at your destination on time.

Where should you go? If you’re on the east coast, why not tour Cape Cod or head south for the Miami to Key West crawl? Are you west of the Mississippi? Historic Route 66 can’t be beat for scenery changes — you can nearly experience all four seasons in one 2-week jaunt.

Reduce Fuel Costs

If you drive a standard Hummer,  you might cringe at the pump. Why not consider leasing an electric vehicle? You’ll find oodles of charging stations in many popular vacation destinations, allowing you to take in the sights while you recharge.

At the very least, check your tires. Poorly inflated ones decrease fuel efficiency. Turn off your AC whenever possible, especially when pulling big hills, to further reduce demand.

Manage Your Road Debris

Sadly, most gas stations don’t have recycling bins. However, letting all those bottles roll around your car’s floor while you travel causes stress. That’s what you’re trying to escape on your holiday.

Make your life easier by packing two bags — one for trash, the other for recyclables. A quick Google search reveals nearby sorting centers if you start to overflow. That way, you aren’t dumping perfectly reusable plastic in landfills, adding to the climate crisis.

Planning a Spring Road Trip

Everyone deserves a vacation getaway. However, you might not have the time or money for boarding a plane and departing for foreign shores.

Why not head out on the highway to find adventure and family fun? Keep these five tips in mind when planning your spring road trip.

Amazing Tanzania – Explore Its Beauties

Each corner of the world undoubtedly has its unique beauty. If you’ve been longing to experience something a tad different from your usual holidays, considering a trip to the sunny continent of Africa can really shake things up. Out of the 54 countries that occupy this massive landmass, Tanzania, located on the eastern shore, is certainly one of the top choices. Perhaps best known for its untamed wilderness, it is the site of the world-famous Serengeti National Park as well as the continent’s highest mountain peak. But what else is there for an adventurous traveler to explore? Read on to learn about what Tanzania has to offer.

Before you go

Before you begin your Tanzania adventure, it’s a good idea to get some basics about this country down. Tanzania is located just below the Equator and has a generally pleasant tropical climate. However, don’t be fooled: Tanzania is large so the weather can be quite different depending on which part you are visiting. Temperatures can get as low as 50 degrees Fahrenheit (10 degrees Celsius) at times so you’ll likely need to pack warm clothes, too, for this tropical adventure. As for seasons, it should be mentioned that as a traveler, you probably want to avoid the hot and humid rainy season that typically occurs from November-December and from March-May.

While the official language of Tanzania is Swahili, you will get away with speaking English in most places. As for your travel budget, Tanzania is rather affordable. Carry a Visa card and you’ll be able to pay in most places, though, if you are planning to see remote corners, be sure to withdraw cash from an ATM beforehand. Additionally, as it usually is when traveling to a tropical destination, certain vaccinations might be in place prior to getting permission to enter the country. Even if not obligatory per se, they are still highly recommended.

Get to know the amazing animals of Africa

Getting up close with the local fauna is a coveted experience you should not miss out on when you’re visiting the amazing country of Tanzania. Serengeti National Park allows for superb animal-watching experiences. You can witness the world’s largest animal migration, the wildebeest migration here, alongside the “Big Five.” You may also want to consider the Ngorongoro Conservation Area where countless animals flock to a water reserve, creating an impressive sight. Lake Manyara National Park is also a prime place for bird watching, while you can spot forest animals in Arusha National Park, with an impressive backdrop created by Mt. Meru.

Admire the Kilimanjaro

Another unmissable experience in Tanzania is seeing the majestic Mount Kilimanjaro as it towers over the landscape. This landmark has become a symbol of the country, and you can rest assured there will be plenty to see in Mount Kilimanjaro National Park. The native villages dotting the map will show you the real face of Tanzania, while hidden waterfalls will fill you with awe. While climbing the mountain itself may not be for everyone, the opportunity is there. Experienced hikers can certainly challenge this giant, minding that it takes about a week to summit at a reasonable pace. However, there are still plenty of hiking opportunities scattered about if you prefer staying closer to sea level.

Take a dip in the turquoise waters

Tanzania is bordered by the Indian Ocean on the east, which not only lends it beautiful white sand beaches but a great number of islands as well. You have probably already heard about the archipelago of Zanzibar. If you have the opportunity, by all means, visit Zanzibar and take a few days to relax in the sun and enjoy some surfing. If you are up for more water adventures, head to Mafia Island and look below the surface. This is a world-class snorkeling destination so you can expect a colorful array of sea creatures if you decide to dive underneath the waves. Pemba Island is also a great candidate if you are a lover of the underwater world.

Get in touch with the locals

Sometimes, we just want to turn off and relax, while other times, we want something more from our travels. It’s not only the location that makes a country unique; it’s also its people, so getting in touch with the locals and delving deeper into their culture is what’s going to leave a truly deep impression, both on you and on them. So, take it a step further and don’t just be an observer. Look for a chance to volunteer overseas and contribute with your help to make a difference in a developing country. Sign up for an environmental conservation program and do something for the environment, or interact directly with the people and empower them through teaching. Needless to say, this is a great way to steer clear of generic tourism and experience the place in a truly authentic way.

Explore the south

While most flock to the north of the country, the south should not be disregarded either. With fewer tourists, it offers something different, for sure, and can expand your horizons vastly. For instance, the Selous Game Reserve is the largest such reserve on the continent. The fact that its southern area is untamed wilderness that is essentially a forbidden area is testament to the greatness of nature that is so clearly still a ruling power, despite the fact that it’s easy to forget when we spend our days in cities, surrounded by concrete. Ruaha National Park can also provide fantastic safari opportunities. Considering that nature escapades are certainly still one of the top wellness travel trends today, Tanzania proves to be a great destination overall. You’ll have plenty of opportunities to give yourself to Mother Nature during your travels.

Tanzania is renowned for its natural treasures: every year, hundreds of thousands of tourists visit this place to experience the African wilderness (this number being as high as one and a half million before the pandemic.) If you get the chance to travel to this beautiful country, it will be a trip of a lifetime.

Vacations and Getaways: Time Away is So Important:

As we all start to get back to life as we knew it before the pandemic, or continuing on for those of use who where front line workers, taking a time out is so important.

We live ing this world were we are promoting the notion that we should be living to work, not working to live. As I see the world reopening and hearing that people just don’t want to work. I thought about the amount of hours that I as adult in my mid-twenties, since I was about eighteen I have been working two jobs and maintaining a part-time to full-time class schedule. It is not that I do not want to work, It is that I am exhausted from working so many hours to just keep life going.

When the pandemic hit, and I finally had time to really reflect on myself and how much I truly was letting my self-care go. I was way overworking myself and not taking any breaks. So I really started to understand how important it was to get away for a few days. This was something that I promised I would do for me when the pandemic started coming to a close.

What I have learned from my getaways:

Time to unplug:

My vacations are filled with taking pictures but nothing else. I do not answer texts that are not related to family. I don’t answer emails. My goal is to leave my busy life at home and not bring it with me. I do not concern myself with work, or social media. I enjoy my coffee in the quietness of nature.  I am able to run and exercise and just be with myself in a different place.

Time for Togetherness:

Vacations and getaways for me are usually accompanied by my loving boyfriend and my pup. This means that we get to spend quality time together. We watch movies, talk, sit down and have dinner together. All the things that we do not always get to do because of the hustle and bustle of life. It is so important for us to get away and have fun. Reconnect as a couple. Talking about the future. Making plans. Playing games, laughing with each other. Learning more about one another. It was really away for us to be more connected to one another. This has helped us be more connected to each other in general. Our relationship is so much stonier now than it was before we went.

Alone time:

I do not always have time for me time. However, when we are on vacation I usually get up early and have a cup of coffee by myself, or I go and take a hot bath alone. It is a good time for me to just breathe, ground myself and regroup to be in the moment with the people who are with me. This is something that is very important to me just in general. I need the time and space to reflect and just relax so I can regain the energy that I need to have fun and be a part of the vacation or getaway. This is also a good time for me to reconnect with myself, maybe there is something that I need to be doing more of that I do not normally do. This is a good time for me to figure that out.

Pre-covid I used to think that vacations and getaways were trivial, something that I did not have time for. After all, I am busy working and trying to make life work. However this is something that is a must. It is a time out for me to get back to what is really important in life and what is not. My job will still be there, but I won’t get this time back with the ones that I love. I wont get this time back for myself. It has now become something that my boyfriend and I are very committed to doing. It is also a time to rest and recharge. Which is so important in this life, that is so fast pace.

Slow down and get away from the world. You will learn new things about yourself!

Stay safe!
