I am always going to consider myself a hopeless romantic. But there is nothing better than taking myself out on a solo date. Here are eight solid reasons, why whether or not you are in a relationship, you will always be your best date night out.

 

1.) You know what you want. And you are your best advocate.

So put your favorite outfit on, make a reservation for one and go treat yourself to a night on the town.

 

2.) There are some things that you enjoy that are yours alone.

Whether it is a ballet for one, or a stroll in your favorite neighborhood, time alone means living in the moment and taking it all in.

 

3. Have you ever been to a movie alone?

It is amazing how much more you enjoy the film. And the best part is not having to agree on what to see. And you don’t have to share your popcorn either. Win win.

 

4.) Chatting with the bartender at a restaurant is a great way to be on a solo date with yourself but still chatty.

So grab that seat at the bar, enjoy your favorite meal and let the people watching begin. Be the mysterious girl at the bar. And if you want to avoid being mistaken for a girl on the prowl, place your bag and jacket on the seat next to you, letting everyone wonder who you are reserving the seat for!

 

5.) Taking yourself out on the ultimate date night out gives you the power to please yourself.

When you set the stage for your own happiness you tell others that you consider yourself a priority. Anyone who wants to spend time with you will have to treat you as the queen that you are. Otherwise, what is the point? You can always take yourself out on the best date.

Grab drinks at a bar you have never been to. See a show, and get that one last table available at the hottest new restaurant. Taking yourself out on a date gives you a chance to explore new places.

Intermittent Fasting as a Couple – 5 Tips for Success

These days, more and more people are realizing that intermittent fasting has tons of health benefits.

 

It can help you prevent various chronic illnesses, and even reverse some of them (like type 2 diabetes).

 

But what if you wanna try intermittent fasting, and your partner’s not on board?

 

Today I’ll share a few tips and suggestions about how you can implement intermittent fasting as a couple, or a family.

Discuss Your Goals

First off, it’s a good idea to sit down and discuss your motivation with your partner. In other words, don’t just tell them you want to try fasting, talk about the frustrations that made you want to try this in the first place.  Then tell them your health goals, how you think fasting can help, and what sacrifices you’re willing to make.

 

If you spend some time chatting about these issues, your partner is a lot more likely to be supportive. In some cases, they may even decide to try it out with you.

 

Choose Breakfast or Dinner – Whichever is More Convenient

The easiest way to start intermittent fasting is to simply shift the timing of one of your meals, at least one day per week.

 

In other words, you could delay breakfast by a couple hours (or skip it). On the other end of the spectrum, you could eat dinner a bit earlier (or skip it).

 

Talk to your partner about which meal is more important to them, in terms of sitting down and eating together. Most people prioritize dinner, because it has a stronger social element, but other people may be the opposite.

 

And don’t forget, you don’t have to do it the same way every day because…

 

Fasting is Flexible – Adapt to Your Schedule

One of the great things about intermittent fasting is that it’s super flexible.  You don’t have to do it the same way every day, which makes it really convenient and adaptable to almost any lifestyle.

 

For example, you may find it convenient to skip breakfast on weekdays, but perhaps you like having a special breakfast with your family on weekends.  And that would be totally fine.

 

Keep track of what works for you over time, and talk to your family about it.  See what works for the best for everyone involved, and then get into a routine.

 

Focus on the Benefits

If you think about it, fasting can actually be really convenient and save you time and effort.

 

For example, think of all the time and effort you could save in terms of shopping, cooking, and clean-up if you skipped breakfast (or dinner) a few days per week.

 

Notice these “wins” and bring them up when you talk to your family members. That will help you remember the positive benefits you get from intermittent fasting (other than the health benefits).

 

If You Have Kids…

In addition to your partner, having kids throws an extra wrinkle into the situation.

 

Here are a couple tips you can try if you have kids:

 

First, even if you’re going to skip breakfast you could still sit down with your kids when they’re eating breakfast, and drink a cup of black coffee or some type of tea.

 

It’s ok to drink coffee, tea, or something like apple cider vinegar while fasting because they have almost no calories and don’t really disrupt your fast.  And by having a drink you can make it seem like you’re still “participating” in the meal.

 

If you decide to skip dinner you could do something similar.  This is a good way to still have that family time while getting the health benefits of fasting.

Final Thoughts 

Intermittent fasting has a ton of health benefits, but sometimes it can be challenging to coordinate as a couple, or with family members.

Overall, fasting is super flexible and it’s worth using a little bit of creativity to figure out something that works.

By implementing intermittent fasting into your lifestyle, you’ll be more likely to live longer and avoid illness, which means you can spend more quality time with your family in the long run.

Every loved one whom I’ve had vent to me has always followed up with “I’m always here for you, too. If you ever need to vent you can come to me.” It’s not that easy though. I am sure they absolutely would listen, some would validate my emotions, a few might hold me if I fell apart in front of them… But I have yet to completely find myself and my efforts in my own loved one.

I convince myself not to bother them anyways, since I know all too well that they have their own problems they’re dealing with. Why would I pile my own issues on top of theirs? I don’t want to be a burden to a loved one. For those who are like me, I get just as emotionally invested in their issues as they are. I make them my own. And I feel their anger, their anxiety, their sadness… I know what it feels like to have too much on your plate, mentally and emotionally. Therefore, I have become a professional at suffering in silence.

It’s no joke when you hear people say “Check up on your Therapist Friend, they’re the ones who actually need the most therapy.” Know why? They have felt EVERYTHING. Everything! Every mood, emotion. Have had every unfortunate thought cross their mind. And they will still feel and think all of it again, if it means they can help relieve a loved one’s pain and anguish in any way.

If you can be there without risking your own mental and emotional well-being, return your Therapist Friend’s effort and support they’ve given you. A little can go a long way.

New Year Resolution: Growing into Your Best Self

 

Every year we sit down and think about what our New Year’s resolution is going to be.  And every year it mostly revolves one way or another to be something that changes us to make us better. We make resolutions that are anything from losing weight or quitting smoking to spending more time with our families or finding a new job. The problem is that most of us who make a resolution abandon it within the first three months. We tend to get distracted, lose focus or decide that it is just too hard to accomplish our goal.  The latter tends to flow from a place where we are not confident in our abilities to get the goal accomplished.

 

Make a Pros and Cons list 

Think for a minute about wanting to quit smoking.  When you think about it, the first response you have is that you can do it.  You make a list of things you can try whether it is quitting cold turkey, using the patches, exercise, online support groups, or going to see a doctor for the pills that help you stop.   You make a pros and cons list of why it is important for you to stop. 

The pros include feeling better, getting healthy, or saving money. The cons include getting lung cancer, wasting money, or you can’t run a quarter of a mile without feeling like your lungs are going to burst out of your chest.  All of these options, pros, and cons just pile up in your mind to reinforce that you can do it, you can quit smoking. 

An alternative to smoking could be getting involved with a new hobby and not having time to think about your vice. Instead of smoking a cigarette or two, you can grow plants indoors by using grow tents. Plants require a lot of time and attention from you and this will prove an effective way to overcome cigarette cravings. 

 

The Risk of Giving Up

Three months later your car breaks down, you lose your job, or you go through a bad breakup.  Here come the triggers.  Now you are stressed out or depressed.  The first thing you reach for is a cigarette, or maybe you think that smoking a cigar or a vape is better so you go that route.  You don’t even realize at the time that you are inhaling nicotine regardless of how you are inhaling it.  You just think that because you are just needing a little hit if you don’t pick up the cigarette that you are so used to, that it will not affect your goal.  

However, the end result is you are right back where you started on the first day of the new year and you have broken your resolution.  Now most people at this point, just say they just proved that they can’t do it, so they lay down their resolution and say maybe they will be stronger next year.  But what if you had help?  What if there was a training workshop that could help you from the beginning of the idea of what resolution you were going to make?  I know you are thinking to yourself that there is nothing like that.  But there is.  It’s called assertiveness training.

 

Join a Workshop that Can Help 

The definition of assertiveness training is a method of training individuals to act in a bold self-confident manner; is a form of behavior therapy designed to help people empower themselves.The assertiveness training workshops have been around since the women’s movement of the 1970s that dealt with mental health and personal growth groups.  It grew out of the realization that many women in the movement were hindering themselves by their lack of ability to be assertive. Today’s assertiveness training workshops are used as part of communication training for such programs as substance abuse treatment, social skills training, vocational programs, and responding to harassment. 

The purpose is to teach people to identify and act on their desires, needs, and opinions while remaining respectful of others. There is a broad approach to the training that can be used for different personal, academic, health care, and work situations.  Some of the areas that the training helps include conflict resolution, realistic goal setting, and stress management.  It also helps with our personal choices that include, but are not limited to, quitting the use of drugs and alcohol, and self-care. In addition to that, you could start attending Job Training Courses which provide you with career development, enrich your mind, and motivate you to go on with your goals instead of giving up. 

These go right in line with our example of our New Year’s resolution to quit smoking along with any number of resolutions you want to set for yourself this year. Add an assertiveness training workshop to your resolution and by the end of the year, mark that goal as accomplished.

Sometimes, She Just Needs To Cut Herself Some Slack

Give Yourself A Break

So, this week I finally did something that I don’t normally do.

I cut myself some slack.

I was having an off week, extremely tired, little to no motivation to do anything, you know, the works.

 

Guilt

Normally, I would guilt myself into getting my act together and compare myself to other people I saw getting work done, resulting in pretty low self-esteem and just feeling pretty crummy overall.

But, this time, I finally realized something. There will come a time when we all need to be our own biggest advocates.

Love Yourself

We need to love ourselves enough to press pause and give ourselves a break.

We need to appreciate that our mental health is just as important as our physical health, and sometimes, we need to give ourselves some time to breathe and to regroup.

So, we miss a couple workouts. We leave a few chores unfinished. We weren’t operating at 100%.

But, if you listen to your body, you’ll realize your limits. We need to respect that we’re only human, and sometimes, that means putting some things on hold.

We need to love ourselves enough to take some time to unburden our minds, free of judgment or rationalizations.

You just need to breathe and be kind to yourself. Love yourself enough to know that your well-being is so important. Be patient with yourself and the process. You’re not alone in feeling the way you’re feeling.

It’s just a bump in the road. You’ll get back to feeling like yourself in time. Just don’t be too hard on yourself while you make your way back.
