The Science Behind Wine Tasting: How to Enhance Your Experience

Wine tasting is more than just sipping a drink; it’s a sensory journey that engages your taste buds, your sense of smell, and even your eyes. The art of wine tasting involves more than just evaluating the flavor; it’s about savoring the nuances of aroma, texture, and appearance. Understanding the science behind wine tasting can elevate your experience and help you appreciate wine in a deeper, more meaningful way. So, how can you enhance your wine-tasting adventure? Let’s explore the fascinating science behind it all and some practical tips to elevate your next wine-tasting session.

1. The Role of Your Senses

Wine tasting is an experience that engages all of your senses—sight, smell, taste, and even touch. Each sense contributes to how you perceive the wine and enhances the overall experience. Here’s a breakdown of each sense and its role:

• Sight: When you first look at the wine, its color can tell you a lot about its age, type, and even its potential flavor profile. Red wines tend to become paler with age, while white wines often deepen in color over time. A quick swirl of the wine in your glass allows you to examine its legs—those streaks left behind on the glass after swirling. The more defined the legs, the higher the alcohol content.
• Smell: Aroma is a crucial aspect of wine tasting. The sense of smell is directly linked to your taste perception, and many of the flavors you experience in wine come from its aroma. Swirl the wine gently in your glass to release its scents. Try to identify the various aromas, which might range from fruity notes like berries and citrus to floral notes like rose or jasmine. Don’t forget to check for any off-smells, such as cork taint or oxidation, which can indicate a problem with the wine.
• Taste: This is where things get interesting. The taste of wine is broken down into five basic components: sweetness, acidity, tannin, alcohol, and body. Each of these elements interacts with your palate to create a unique experience. Sweetness comes from residual sugars, acidity gives the wine crispness, tannins contribute structure and bitterness, alcohol adds warmth, and the body of the wine refers to its weight and mouthfeel. The balance between these elements is key to a wine’s overall quality and enjoyment.
• Touch: While this one might seem odd, the tactile sensation of wine is important, too. The texture of the wine—whether it feels smooth or rough—can tell you a lot about the quality and aging potential of the wine. For example, a wine with well-integrated tannins will feel smoother, while a wine with high tannins might feel more astringent.

2. The Power of Aroma: A Deep Dive Into Smell

The sense of smell is perhaps the most important of all the senses when it comes to wine tasting. As you take a sniff of wine, you’re not just experiencing its aroma in a superficial way—you’re engaging your olfactory system, which plays a major role in how you perceive taste.

Aromas in wine come from the grapes themselves, the fermentation process, and even the aging process. For example, wines that are aged in oak barrels might pick up notes of vanilla, spice, and smoke. Conversely, wines that are aged in stainless steel tanks tend to retain more of their fresh, fruity aromas. When you take a deep inhale, try to pinpoint specific scents like green apple, honey, citrus, or even the earthy smell of mushrooms. Wine aroma is complex, so the more you practice, the more you’ll notice subtle layers that enhance your tasting experience.

3. Swirling the Wine: Unlocking Its True Essence

One of the most iconic moments of wine tasting is when you swirl the wine in your glass. This isn’t just for show; it’s actually a key step in releasing the wine’s full potential. Swirling helps to aerate the wine, allowing it to breathe and release volatile compounds that make up its aroma. As you swirl, oxygen interacts with the wine, softening its aromas and allowing more complex scents to emerge.

Swirling also helps to reveal the wine’s body and texture. It can provide you with clues about the wine’s alcohol content and viscosity—wines with higher alcohol content will have thicker, slower-moving legs, while wines with lower alcohol content may swirl more easily. Don’t be afraid to give your wine a good swirl; it’s a fun and essential part of the process.

4. Sparkling Wine from Around the World: A Unique Tasting Experience

Sparkling wines offer a particularly fun tasting experience because of their effervescence, which adds a unique layer to the overall sensory experience. From Champagne to Prosecco, sparkling wines from around the world are known for their bubbles, which not only change the texture of the wine but also bring out different aromas and flavors. The effervescence of sparkling wine enhances the perception of acidity, making the wine feel more refreshing and livelier on the palate.

When tasting sparkling wine, pay attention to the intensity of the bubbles—fine, persistent bubbles often signal a higher-quality wine, while larger bubbles may indicate a more mass-produced product. Sparkling wines often exhibit aromas of fresh fruits like apples, pears, or citrus, along with subtle yeasty or biscuity notes due to the second fermentation process. The fun of tasting sparkling wines lies in the way they tickle your tongue and brighten the flavors, making them perfect for celebrations and casual sipping alike.

5. The Importance of Temperature in Wine Tasting

Temperature plays a significant role in wine tasting, affecting both the aroma and taste of the wine. If a wine is too cold, it can mute its aromas and make it difficult to fully appreciate its flavor profile. If a wine is too warm, it can feel overly alcoholic and lose its crispness. As a general rule, red wines should be served slightly cooler than room temperature (around 60-65°F), while white wines should be chilled to about 50-55°F. Sparkling wines are best served very chilled, around 40°F, to keep the bubbles lively and refreshing.

6. Personal Preferences: The Final Key to Enjoyment

While there is a science to wine tasting, there’s also an art that lies in personal preferences. No matter how many tasting notes you read, the most important part of wine tasting is what you enjoy. Don’t be afraid to trust your instincts and enjoy the experience. Some people prefer bold, tannic reds, while others may lean toward the light, fruity qualities of white wines. The more you taste, the more you’ll develop a palate that is uniquely yours.

Conclusion: Elevating Your Wine-Tasting Journey

Wine tasting is a beautiful and enjoyable experience that combines science and personal preference. By engaging all of your senses and understanding the role of sight, smell, taste, and touch, you can enhance your appreciation for wine. Whether you’re savoring a glass of rich red wine, exploring the delicate aromas of white wine, or celebrating with sparkling wine from around the world, the more you practice, the better your wine-tasting skills will become. Remember, wine tasting isn’t just about evaluating a wine—it’s about enjoying the moment and discovering what you truly love. So, grab your glass, take a deep sniff, swirl, sip, and savor the complex world of wine. Cheers!

Six Surprising Health Benefits of Wine (Consumed In Moderation)

Excessive wine consumption and alcohol intake can lead to serious health issues and even death, though wine has some surprising health benefits when consumed in moderation.

Renowned scientists from Harvard and other esteemed universities have explored the health benefits of wine.

While it’s essential to restrict wine consumption, women can indulge in one (150-milliliters) glass daily, and men can enjoy two glasses.

Here are just a few key health benefits of drinking wine in moderation.

Improve Heart Condition

The resveratrol found in wine is surprisingly beneficial for your heart’s health, and studies show that supplementing your diet with an occasional red wine might reduce cardiovascular risks. Resveratrol acts as an antioxidant that prevents clots from forming in your blood vessels and reduces your risk of heart attacks and stroke.

Red wines typically have higher resveratrol, so consider opening a pinot noir or malbec for your next occasion.

Reduce Type II Diabetes Risk

Drinking wine can also reduce the risk of type II diabetes, as resveratrol can help your body absorb insulin.

In fact, a two-year study following people on a Mediterranean diet that consumed red wine, white wine, or mineral water showed that those who consumed moderate amounts of wine showed the most significant reduction in cardiometabolic risks.

Prevent Blindness

One final benefit of resveratrol is that it can help delay blindness. Research from the Washington University School of Medicine shows that some blindness is caused by abnormal blood vessel growth, and resveratrol can prevent and control this growth.

Age-related macular degeneration, which is abnormal blood vessel growth in the eye, is the leading cause of blindness in Americans over 50.

So if you find yourself needing reading glasses, don’t feel guilty having an evening glass of wine!

Prevent Memory Loss

Another surprising benefit of wine is that it can help prevent memory loss and even Alzheimer’s disease. This is because specific wine properties reduce inflammation, which helps clear your mind and drives away toxins. These toxins, such as beta-amyloid and tau, can lead to more severe diseases like Alzheimer’s and dementia.

Minimize Liver Disease Risk

Alcohol is widely known for causing liver disease, though you may be surprised to learn that moderate wine consumption can reduce liver disease risk.

A study done by the San Diego School of Medicine found that subjects that drink one glass of wine per day are only half as likely to be at risk of Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) than those who don’t drink wine.

Fight Cancer

If you want to ward off breast cancer, a glass of wine in the evening may be just what you need. Wine helps increase testosterone levels in women and decreases estrogen levels, which is ideal for preventing breast cancer.

Enjoy an Evening Glass Guilt-Free

Given the number of health benefits, it’s no surprise that studies show moderate wine drinkers tend to live longer than those that don’t drink. While all of the positive effects of wine can be quickly reversed when consumed in excess, you shouldn’t feel guilty to have one glass a few times per week. Just be sure to choose a glass of red wine for maximum benefits!

One Bottle of Wine Can Take You on an Adventure of a Lifetime

Throughout cultures, sharing a bottle of wine can cultivate meaningful relationships. Wine acts as a destroyer of barriers and allows an individual to be vulnerable with others sipping from the same elixir. It is needless to say that a bottle of wine is exactly what you should be craving right before planning an adventure of a lifetime with a group of soul-bonding sisters.

Pop

Cling

Sip

As humans, we are social creatures of habit and planning every girl’s trip should consist of these four stages while sharing a bottle of your favorite wine.

The Catch Up Stage

The First Glass- a.k.a the first ripple

You begin by unlocking memories of the others to discover what they have been up to from the last time you all have been together. Initially, everyone goes around and speaks solely of their peaks. Pictures are presented, videos are viewed, stories are shared, and amazement appears as an apparition across the room. We are accustomed to display our best selves during this stage, and there is nothing wrong with that because every single one of us is beautiful in our own way. We deserve to brag about how great we are. However, I challenge you to dive into the second stage as you take another sip out of that delicious juice of vulnerability.

Dig In Deep

These are your girls in front of you and they should never judge you for being your most authentic self. Reveal to them what has been keeping you up at night, have those difficult conversations, talk to them about your mental health. I guarantee these women will provide you with a helping hand. Sometimes it takes breaking down your walls for others to break down theirs, with that a deeper bond is engraved, and commonalities are brought up to the surface.

Revealing Your Spark

You are defenseless right now and deserve to inhale that glass of wine, so just do it.

While you have a nice buzz going, prepare a mental list of your passions and desires, then without any hesitation, speak it into existence. What are things you have never done before? Where are places you have always wanted to go? And always give the reason why. Answering the why’s in life reveals parts about yourself you may have not been familiar with. Once again, find the commonalities in these questions; they should be quite obvious, look for the spark in your friend’s eyes when they resonate with something you are discussing. Such a spark will invoke a plethora of ideas and there is only one thing left to do.

Time to Be Spontaneous

You’re feeling impulsive like Jim Carry in the movie Yes Man

There is only one thing left to do.

Block out those dates,

Lock in that reservation,

And clock into a new adventure.

As soon as you know it, wine night is going to be a ritual to not only reveal who you are, rather help you discover who you are yet to be.

I leave you with this quote by my favorite author Paulo Coelho from his novel Brida, “Accept what life offers you and try to drink from every cup. All wines should be tasted; some should only be sipped, but with others, drink the whole bottle.”

Be vulnerable

Find your soul sisters

Live life as if you had nothing to lose because at the end of the day every moment taken for granted is a loss in itself

20 Things You Only Understand If You Love Spending Time Alone

There are two kinds of people in this world—those who love to be surrounded by people all of the time, whether they are out, home, or on the go, and those who love being alone in their silence, solitude, and bed. Not to say that one person is better than the other, but they are total polar opposites. Some people love human contact, others despise it. And, there are just somethings you totally understand if you’re a “me, myself, and I” person.

1. Being alone means there is absolutely zero judgment at all. Zero. None. Negative none.

2. You can walk around without pants on and not have to worry about a damn thing.

3. You can eat whatever you want, at any time of day, and have no one to tell you otherwise. Ice cream for breakfast? Bring on the damn sprinkles.

4. You have a list of excuses that you run through on a regular basis to get out of plans with people you really don’t want to do—like, your mom needs help moving, your sister needs you to babysit the kids, your super is coming to fix the kitchen sink.

5. Ordering food for one is way cheaper than ordering for two-three and having to figure out how to split the Seamless/Postmates bill.

6. You know vegging out on the couch with your show to binge watch with some wine is way better than having to go to a club and rub up against sweaty and annoying strangers who keep touching you without your permission.

7. There is no pleasure quite like lighting a candle in your bedroom and snuggling under the covers with a good book.

8. Relationships are hard to get into because your personal time is more precious than anything else you can imagine.

9. And, the worst thing you can deal with is dating someone who wants to be with you or see you on an everyday basis. No thank you.

10. You don’t understand why people feel the need to text all day, every day. Having time away from the rest of the world is special.

11. People think that you’re a weirdo or a loner because you’re not always out doing something with other people.

12. But, in reality, you are constantly doing something—just solo.

13. Traveling alone is one of your all-time dreams. And, you have no problem going to a new country all by yourself.

14. You think that people who need to go with someone everywhere (including running errands, or going to the hair salon, or even traveling) are crazy and dependent.

15. People always say you’re the most independent person they’ve ever met.

16. You always people-watch and study body language when you’re out, thinking about their stories and where they come from.

17. You don’t understand why people hate eating by themselves.

18. People never worry about you if they haven’t heard from you in a while because they know you’re always around, just under the radar.

19. The only person you’d ever consider spending your life with is someone who is just as independent as you are because you cannot imagine having to do everything with someone else tied to your side all of the time.

20. You wouldn’t trade your alone time in for anything in the world—except, maybe, a million dollars.

10 Reasons Why Your Wine Obsession Is Actually Good For You

Everyone who knows me knows that wine is my favorite thing to drink. In high school, my best friend and I would have weekly wine nights and everyone laughed at us but apparently now wine is trendy amongst millennials. We’ve known for years that wine is an all-encompassing magical health drink, and I’m about to share its magic with the world. I am fully convinced that wine is healthy, and here’s why:

10.  There is no specified time to drink wine.

Wine is okay at all times of the day. Ran out of coffee? Just mix rosé with OJ and some fruit and you have a lovely little sangria to go with your toast. Perfect.

9. Wine cannot make you fat.

It’s fat-free, and it actually helps you burn calories so what’s the point in drinking anything else? Drink wine on the treadmill-DOUBLE THE CALORIES BURNED (probably… doesn’t hurt to try).

8. Wine drunk is the BEST kind of drunk.

The world becomes your dancefloor and you love everything and everyone. The world is just a really good place after a bottle of wine. Mental health– duh.

7. Wine naturally has immune-boosting powers.

Heck ya. Magic. *drops mic*

6. Wine is FULL of antioxidants.

Which is what everyone needs on a daily basis…why not get double the amount by drinking double the wine?

5. It’s so much more socially acceptable…

to drink wine out of the bottle than it is to drink tequila out of the bottle…trust me, I’ve done both… many times.

4. Wine lowers your cholesterol.

Lower cholesterol lessens your chances for heart disease, which essentially means that wine can save your life.

3. WINE HELPS PREVENT CANCER.

No explanation needed, ladies and gentlemen.

2. Wine helps you retain more information.

Hello, 4.0 GPA. Harvard Law, you can accept me at any time.

1. Last but DEFINITELY not least, red wine boosts your sex drive.

Its scent and flavor has sex drive boosting powers. Heck ya x2. Sorry dad.

Wine is beautiful. Wine is happiness. Wine is everything you need in a bottle. I’m a self-proclaimed health freak so naturally, I am willing to do whatever it takes to put my health first, and if that means that I can drink a lot of wine and get away with it, that’s totally okay with me. Anything to validate my wine consumption is a fun time for Yunesta, and maybe I won’t have to lie to my doctor so often about it if everyone knew the benefits to this lovely grape beverage. Now I know I’m not the only one who needs wine to survive, and to everyone else like me, you’re welcome, friends.
